Lore

"9997... 9998... 9999... 10000" Mazo said as he completed his daily ritual of 10,000 push ups. "And now for the prayer," he said gleefully as he sat down and began to pray. Now who he was praying to is the story that we take. Long ago, before the birth of Runeterra there existed an Elder God by the name of Yatagabor. Yatagabor was a god of peace and prosperity, he promoted good life and happiness. Yatagabor was the key factor of Runeterra's creation, in the early stages of its birth, Yatagabor put the stones in motion that allowed life to prosper on Runeterra. That is at least what Mazo knows of his god, what he does not know is that Yatagabor possessed a great power which he put inside of Runeterra, and those with devotion to him would be able to control. Mazo does not know his fate, but you will.

Before you can truly know what Mazo is, you must know what his God is. Yatagabor is the god of Life and Prosperity, urging his followers to bring their life's to the fullest, to live each day with a purpose to help others grow and grow by helping others. Yatagabor is also a personal enemy to Nagakaborus and his ideals. Where they both want their pupils to uphold their ideals and achieve their dreams. Nagakaborus will let his disciples destroy anyone in their path, Yatagabor condones violence unless violence is acted upon to them. For Yatagabor and his followers, Life is a continuous journey to help those in need of help and to never take advantage of others to get what one wants. If one wants something, they must do it by themselves or repay in full debt to the person they used to help them. For Yatagabor, his followers may only unlock their true potential by learning to embrace their lives and the lives of others.

"Alright," Mazo said, "Now it's time for my chores." As for usual, Mazo would take two stone cubes from the base of the mountain, to the top. Unable to use anything but himself. The stones that he carried contained a certain energy only found in his birth place of Ionia, they contained a pure form of mana allowing anyone that could wield them to be refreshed in spirit and mind. But who would Mazo be taking them to today, none other then his friend since childhood, Sona, even though she could not speak Mazo seemed to always know what she wanted. He would usually say, "Yatagabor helps me to hear what can not be heard by others." Of course anyone besides Sona would laugh at him if he said that. The climb to Sona's house is not an easy one for most traveler's, but Mazo has done it so many times that he seems to not notice it any more. He reaches to top in less then an hour, and Sona is waiting there for him with cookies as a token of her appreciation. The two would usually spend the next half an hour together, chatting and relaxing. But Mazo must return to his chores at some point, and he would say goodbye to his friend and go about his next chore.

Mazo started to climb down the mountain to get to his next chore, he must spar with his friend Jax. He was always looking for more practice, and Mazo was happy to help. The day passed and near sunset Mazo was done with all of his chores, he helped most of his community with things that he did on a daily basis. From helping some with retrieving water from a well, to helping others by digging holes to find precious metals. These were things that Mazo did every day, and his faith in Yatagabor made him happy to help the ones that he helped. On his way back to the place he called home, he heard an unfamiliar voice coming from the lake in the center of his town. He carefully approached the hill that lay before the lake, and he looked over to see a woman who seemed to be talking with the water. Mazo did not notice at the time, but she had a spherical item at her feet. "Hello traveler," he said, "You must be new to our village, because I have never heard your voice before. Would you like me to help guide you through our town?" He asked in a happy manner and with a smile on his face. The woman stood up and picked up her item, "So this is the one Nagakaborus? Let me test him to see."

The woman seemed to leash out something from her item and it hurled it self towards Mazo, it came so fast that he was unable to react to it. The Leash wrapped around his body and seemed to want to pull him towards her. Mazo struggled to keep his footing, but as soon as it came to him, it also retreated from him. "What just happened?" he whispered under his breath. "So he is the one," the woman said, "Let me introduce my self to you, I am Illaoi. And you are the one who is going to die." The woman started bringing her item over her head and as she did, a massive tentacle began to emerge from it. Mazo thought of this as his end, and the only thing he could think about in these moments was him never telling Sona what she really meant to him, but Mazo closed his eyes and prepared for death...... "Gah, what is this?" He heard the woman shout. Mazo opened his eyes to see the tentacle being stopped by a giant stone hand, and all that he could say was, "Yatagabor, give me strength." The stone hand began to crush the tentacle in to nothingness, when the tentacle disappeared the stone hand retreated in to the earth. "What is this?" Illaoi asked. "This is my god, Yagatabor. He is everywhere, He is everything. He is the very earth it self." Mazo said. "Well then," countered Illaoi, "I shall destroy his domain." She yelled while jumping into the air and hurling herself back down. "No!" Mazo shouted. He held out his hand in a way that made the water of the lake move, and start to leash out and stop Illaoi's decent. When she finally came back to the ground, Mazo ran to her and threw a punch at her, Illaoi was able to put her item in front of his punch, but something did not seem right. His fist began to make steam.... no, it was smoke, his entire fore arm was on fire, and he knocked back Illaoi into the lake. "How can this be?" Illaoi said, "Nagakaborus givea me the strength to defeat anyone!" Illaoi looked defeated, as if her spirit had been crushed. "I will tell you why." Mazo said, "It is because Yatagabor flows through the world. He is the World. And your Nagakaborus is not welcome in Ionia." Illaoi chuckled at Mazo, and began to laugh loudly. "Now you, I like," she said as tentacles came from the water and began to pull her down, "We will meet again, and you will not have luck next time"

Mazo knew that he would have to be prepared for when that day came. And he would be ready.

"Yagatabor guides those who let him in, and those who do not are corrupted by Nagakaborus." -- Mazo.

Abilities/Kit

Passive Fragment of an Elder God Every 30/27/25/23/20 seconds (scailing with level 1/6/11/16/18) a fragment of Yatagabor will spawn with in a 1000 radius of Mazo. If Mazo uses an ability while within a 500 radius of the fragment, the fragment will be consumed and the ability will deal additional effects to any target affected. Additionally, the fragments can not spawn within a 700 radius of each other. After one fragment has been used, another can not be used for 3 seconds.

Q Tidal Clash Mana Cost: 40/50/60/70/80 Cone Ability Cooldown: 10/9/8.5/8/7 Mazo controls two streams of water that clash together and deal damage to targets in a box shape in front of Mazo. If a target is within 100 units of the collision area, they will take double the damage that they would normally take. Additionally, any allied champions that are hit in the center of the clash are healed for half of the damage that enemies would take. Mazo is not healed. Both of the streams will start 200 units on the left and right of Mazo. Range: 650, Damage: 70/130/170/225/260 (+75% of Bonus AD) Damage if in Center: 140/260/340/450/520 (+150% of Bonus AD) Heal for Allies in the center: 70/130/170/225/260 (+75% of Total AD)

W Molten Fury Mana Cost: 30/30/45/45/60 Instant Cast Ability Cooldown: 10/8/7/5/4 Mazo's hands become imbued with the fury of Yagatobor, making his next auto attack deal bonus damage to the enemy target, and knock them back. This effect will also reset his auto attack timer. This effect lasts for 5 seconds or until he hits a unit, during this duration he gains bonus movement speed. (Since people apparently keep getting mixed up about what I intended for this ability. It is supposed to be used in one of two ways. Comboing with your E and pushing them back into your team or minion wave or tower, and to be used to peel for the ADC or whoever.)

E Grasp of The Earth Mana Cost: 50/70/100/140/190 Skill Shot Ability Cooldown: 13/12/11/10/9 Mazo sends out a hand of stone from his target location, if he hits a champion wit this effect, the hand will then stun the champion. R Blessing of Yatagabor Mana Cost: 100/150/200 Instant Cast Ability Cooldown: 120/100/80 Mazo becomes untargetable while he channels this ability for up to 5 seconds, but is not able to act or do damage. During this channel time Mazo can select from one of three blessings of Yatagabor. Giving him different advantages in a fight depending on which blessing is used. (Blessing is chosed similar to Twisted Fate's Wild Card).

Blessing of Water: If Mazo chooses the Blessing of Water, he gains increased Movement Speed and any cost of Tidal Clash becomes empowered while this blessing is active. Duration: 10 seconds. Movement Speed Buff: 5%/10%/15% (Cooldown Reduction will not reduce the Cooldown of Tidal Clash while this blessing is active).

Good picture choice.

Your lore is like a checklist of all the common Mary Sue traits. Mazo is best buddies with Sona (who isn't even in the same city-state as Mazo), spars with Jax (who is badass enough that he wins fights with a lamppost and would probably not be in the same area), and leaves Illaoi discouraged after passing her test (which is HER ENTIRE REASON FOR HER FAITH). I STRONGLY recommend you cut down on the extraneous champion relationships and focus only on what's important. Also, do some proofreading on your lore - whenever you write dialogue, you're supposed to start a new paragraph whenever a different person starts speaking. It's usually represented online as two linebreaks.

Your Q in a best-case scenario is overpowered as hell. One shot instantly wins trades. Your W is counterproductive by virtue of knocking back a target you're trying to kill in melee. Your E is a horribly-out-of-place skillshot stun that actually has scaling stun duration. Your ult is, in short, "Let's go win the teamfight right now".

I can get behind muscle guy with elemental powers, but that's not really being represented well in the abilities. The ult especially is in the wrong kit entirely. Figure out what you're really trying to do here, both in role and theme, and focus on that instead of trying to do everything.

I like the lore, however I feel like his abilities are too obviously a spin off of Illaoi's I feel like it would be better if his entire kit was different from hers. Ie passive doesn't spawn things on walls, Q is a forward skillshot, W is an empowered auto, E is a grab which doesn't pull but applies a status effect. Also the constant health gain from using spells really rings similar.

I feel like if they had completed different kits it would parallel the disparity between their gods.

Also small fact on Illaoi lore, her test is not done to kill it is a manner of removing the unworthy and fallen individuals from the world. So it would make more sense if she tried to have him removed through other manners as the only reason she would target him is if her god has a vendetta against his, and in that case her god would probably know the other god well enough to understand the power that he would imbue into Mazo

Have an upvote!

This concept sort of reminds me of the Avatar in how he uses water, fire, and earth in his abilities. That being said, I like how you've made him into a foil for Illaoi, both in his lore and in gameplay. Just going to give my thoughts on each of his abilities, plus some questions.

Passive Interesting take on a spawning ability. Can his fragments be destroyed by enemies to prevent him from getting empowered abilities, or can only Mazo interact with them?

Q When you say the collision area, are you referring to where the two streams of water intersect? If so, then how large is the area of the spell? I ask because it seems like it'd be a bit too easy to get the double damage sweet spot, especially since this is a point and click ability by all appearances.

W A bit bland, but a solid peeling ability; that being said, the knockback kind of goes against you if you're trying to keep a target engaged. It seems counter-intuitive to have this move give you a movespeed buff, then knock away the target you're chasing. Again, this works if you're trying to peel for someone.

E Probably my favorite ability in this kit, I love the image of a rock/mud hand grasping for the target and collapsing over them. My only question is does the duration extend for every 100 AD you have, or can you just extend it by .25 seconds by having 100 bonus AD?

R To be honest, this seems pretty underwhelming. It gives you good sustain, but you get two, maybe three ability casts out of this before it ends, and what can you accomplish? What is your goal going to be when you use his R?

I love the idea and abilities, but the actual character is pretty similar to Illaoi as they both pray to pagan gods for their power.

No Good Deed1/26/2016, 1:30:01 AM1 votes

This is a pretty neat Idea you got here, Let me see what I can add in comment. First off let me just say that I like Lore's when they're in story form, I'm a bad judge of them but I like them non-the-less. The passive seems very situational for what it offers. It's unique, but may be hindered by its own radius restrictions. Maybe buff up the effects or make it a sort of collect/stock effect like Bard's charms. Just a suggestion... The Q I feel acts as a sort of box shaped Venn-diagram AoE and to be honest I like it. It's empowered form however feels very underpowered for how unreliable his passive would make it. He would need to be close enough to the fragment to gain its buff and the enemy would need to be close enough to him to get hit by the ability. It might play out different in-game but... Pfft who knows really, right? The W I really like. I feel like it has a ton of potential for play making or even as a simple damage spell. That said it's also restricted by how it knocks back its target keeping it from being over-powered. Which is a great thing. Curious about how well it might work as a chasing tool though... Now his E; I like the idea of an earth hand just racing after an enemy going to choke a b*tch, just seems really satisfying. The only real problem with this spell (aside from its high cost) is its potential for an absurdly long stun time. If Mazo were to go total ham and run full AD he could end up with a potential 3-4 second ranged AoE stun, and given his other abilities and their scalings he could easily become an absurdly powerful AD one-shoter, and that's not even counting his ult... Speaking of; his R Seems to be the single most powerful thing that would be on the rift in terms of pure numbers. A Global, AoE AD/AP buff with healing and movement speed boost(unlisted amount?). I really don't even know how to judge this one, I really don't. TL:DR He has some really good points, some meh points, and some points that need work, but looks to be an all-around solid champ. Way to powerful in some respects but real interesting non-the-less. Good Luck With Everything!

UPDATE

  • Changed R to make it fit more thematically and help his kit.

  • Made E's increased stun based on Bonus AD instead of just AD.

Hey! ^_^ Here are my thoughts on Mazo, The Unwavering Faith!

Lore: If I remember off the top of my head wasn't Sona an orphan? And she's a famous performer so does it make sense for her to live on top of a mountain away from civilization?

As for Yatagabor the information surrounding him is really vague; like what does he stand for? What does he want from his followers? Why does he oppose Nagakaboros? When you take a look at Illaoi she makes it clear what her god is like: she constantly demands you follow your goals, that she believes you in fulfilling your desire no matter what and crushing whoever stands in your way, that you constantly stay in motion. That's what nagakaboros stands for, constant change and for all being to follow their own desires no matter what. I can't figure out what Yatagabor stands for from reading the quotes besides peace and prosperity which is relatively vague. Mazo a nice and hardworking guy, that's about all I could figure out.

Also Nagakaboros pretty much demands that you follow your desires and constantly grow, it is neither good nor evil so why does Yatagabor deem this "corruption"? Why does Yatagabor's philosophy deem that following your own desire is bad? Also it seems really weird for illaoi who lives all the way in bilgewater to just show up in Ionia just to talk to a boy for a bit.

Passive: Is there a limit to how many shards can spawn near him? If he just sits in an area and lets shards spawn what can the enemy team do to stop him? I also feel like there should be a mechanic to take down the shards otherwise it just creates permanent zones where the enemey can approach without getting AOE stunned for 2 seconds.

Also it kind of feels like more of a bonus thing to his kit and not exactly core to it, just my opinion.

Q: Pretty solid skill, does a ton of damage but at the same time can easily be dodged. My only issue that you can just E in front of someones face and than hit them for over 520 base damage plus scaling which might be a bit oppressive to melees......

W: Kind of contradictory to the rest of his kit, Mazo looks like e excels at fighting at close combat with the huge damage from his Q and the stuns from his E but he knocks them away from him? It's cool to knockback someone into your own team or peel someone away but does this fit in with the concept of a juggernaut?

E: Probably stuns for a bit too long:/ With 200 AD you essentially have a close range AOE ashe arrow on a nine second cooldown maybe a bit lower with items like Spirit visage and cdr runes.

R: Incredibly powerful and game changing but stats are a very boring way to create an advantage:/ Also does it fit with the rest of the theme as a tank/juggernaut?

Juggernaut?: Aren't juggernauts supposed to have minimal CC at most? All the juggernauts(Except Skarner but he's honestly more of a bruiser/fighter) only have soft CC yet Mazo is rocking both a knockback and a ranged stun. Didn't they do that so they didn't become unstoppable balls of hp/ Like imagine if Darius or Illaoi had a stun that would be ridiculous. Why not change Mazo into a pure tank? You would only have to change his Q and most of his kit is based on utility anyway.

Anyway here were my thoughts on Mazo, The Unwavering Faith! ^_^ I'm sorry but could you take a quick look at my own concept? I'm having trouble putting on the finishing touches and want some opinions on it before the deadline. Thanks!

Lore - The lore seems like a muddle. It felt like you just wanted to cram as many champion into the lore as possible, instead of writing a structured lore, and placing champion in were it works. It doesn't have a nice flow or follow a strong theme. Yes he does follow a God that likes everything that is good, but is considered good. You need to go much more in depth into the rules of the God, and I would like a lot more description. If he is in the middle of Ionia in a beautiful land, I want to live in that land.

Passive - I like that the enemy knows where Mazo is at his strength. From just reading his passive, i'm guessing he's going to be a strong zone controller, and not a strong chaser, with a slow methodic playstyle.

Q - Holy. That damage at the center is just waaaay to strong. That aside, I like the spell. It gives a got amount of utility for you allies that requires them to get close to you, and is thematic to helping other people.

W - This seems like a solid spell. You can, as you say, do a Mazosec, or help peel for your allies, which keeps with the cohesion. With him being a juggernaut, it also takes advantage of the little mobility, meaning that you could just knock them further away from yourself.

E - I really like the spell, but i feel it gives a bit too much utility for a basic spell. You can get like a 3 second AOE stun . This is an absolute game changes, and definitely needs some turning down. Otherwise, a nice spell.

R - Forget what I said about his E, this is incredible. I do like the concept, but it basically just gets rid of the need for the passive, which is a good passive to balance Mazo. This just makes the E OP. Having a 9 second cooldown, 3 second AOE stun anywhere on the map is.. words cannot describe enough XD. However, it doesn't really fit with the rest of his character. He is meant to be a master of the elements, yet he can master one element over another. Surely this disrupts the "balance", that he so preaches?
