Why isn't 1v1 an official game mode already?

Years ago people were playing ARAM's and a couple other community game modes in customs, but ARAM stood out to be the most popular so they made it into an official game mode and map that enforces the previously "unwritten" rules like no recall, no shopping except when you're dead etc. 1v1 is also obviously popular, with "unwritten" options like BO1/BO3/BO5, random champs/same champs, first blood/first tower/100cs etc. yet it's not made into an official game mode where you can elegantly and comfortably set up all of these and not have to leave everytime and create another game for BO3's or BO5's. Also, if we're discussing this, what about implementing LAN gameplay (ups, downs, things that make it possible or impossible)? Like, being able to play with your friends on a hotspot network. Would this reduce pings? Would this make you able to play with no connection? (in an offline hotspot that actually only connects the computers with each other)

i think its because riot is afraid a lot of people will play those modes over 5v5 ranked summoner's rift or normal rift

why do i say that? because a bunch of people are like: the team is dragging me down so, they will ofc, prefer the 1v1 or 2v2 mode. i would as well tbh, even if i hate the rule of "fb" or "100 cs" or "first turret" and would like to actually get to destroy the nexus, but, well, that's another thing.

They did release a 1v1 and 2v2 map and they simply found that nobody played it. So they never rereleased it. People always ask but nobody actually plays it when it gets out out.

they thought about making a 1v1 map, i think it was called "magma chamber" or something like that but it was ultimately scrapped.

Because they don't reinvest as much money in their game as developers of similar size and it shows.

The 1v1 Snowdown Showdown game mode was a mode that just didn’t work out. The idea of it seemed fun, but it was spectacularly unpopular when we released it. Maybe there’s an execution of it that could be more compelling than version 1.0, but it would need to undergo some serious surgery, and that just doesn’t feel worth it when compared against making newer modes like Blood Moon.

This mode actually ended up working a lot better as a viewing experience for tournaments or esports events (like All-Stars). I feel like it will continue to have a home there (it’s also fun to watch pros battle it out 1v1!).

Riot's words, not mine. Don't shoot the messenger.

Agreed. Bring Back Snowdown Showdown. the 1v1, 2v2 Mode. Win on First Blood, First Tower, or first to 100 CS.

The appeal is too niche, and it would get stale very quickly after a meta forms. League champions were not designed and balanced entirely for 1v1.

They had the 1v1 a few years back as their snowdown event and everyone whined and bitched about it.

I had asked about something like this years ago with a sparring game mode, and got mixed replies about it. (https://boards.na.leagueoflegends.com/en/c/skin-champion-concepts/wAPlpEsI-sparring-game-mode)

Honestly, this would work perfectly as an Event game mode at least.

I feel like they did a 1v1/2v2 event mode at one point, but the problem ended up being server resources. Essentially, in ARAM or SR, you have 10 players on 1 game instance, but take the same players and have them play 1v1 you end up with 5 instances, in essence quintupling the server resources involved.

That combined with a really really rapid drop off in play rates was I think why they don't do this.

EDIT: Part of the reason why there is no IP/BE gain off of 1 player customs is to also discourage people from using a full games worth of server resources on 1 player. I know in the past they've even disabled customs if you have under 2 or 4 real players in the past when they were having some resource issues

as far as i remember riot said no one played that, recently valve released a 2v2 mode in CS GO and I never struggled to find a game there, It's sometimes even faster than the normal Q League is a much bigger game than CS os I don't think here shouldn't be a problem with such a Q

It even is a ranked Q btw

I believe the said that they are working on it.

JoeMG12/12/2017, 6:01:33 PM1 votes

I would definitely play some 1v1s to kill time, but I could see how it wouldn't be super popular and wouldn't be worth the resources to develop.
