Climbing to Master Tier with Garen only in my new video series! Please leave any feedback to help me
Yesterday I posted the second episode to my Garen to Master Tier series, which r/leagueoflegends seem to really enjoy. I got a ton of feedback there, and I'm still brainstorming and refining my commentary to find a great mix between being informative and engaging, yet keeping my personality being goofy and happy-go-lucky.
I would love any feedback you have for me as I'd like to make my climb more educational so Garen mains or any toplaner from here can take away something from my videos. Please note that my aim at the moment is to make highlight videos and not to cover the entire game. This is for digestion purposes as I have read from many of my current subscribers that sometimes featuring the full game is a bit too much for them. I do upload VOD's of my stream games which do have commentary (Stream Showdown) which does highlight my thought process a lot.
I received a ton of feedback so far thanks to r/leagueoflegends. Here are a few points that I think I find common in other people's feedback.
-
I can use editing to my advantage more in terms of conveying my thought process. What several individuals liked @ 4:14 when I included bit of text in the video stating that I should have used Exhaust before the Thunderlords Proc hit Poppy, which most likely would have killed her thanks to the MR reduction the spell gives. Many kind individuals also explained to me when I dueled Poppy with Red Buff, I originally said I was going to avoid fighting her, but my commentary in terms of changing my decision wasn't clear. Overall, it seems that even if I didn't make it clear enough through my recorded commentary, text additions can seem to bring clarity to make up for this.

People enjoy my personality for the most part, however many have suggested that instead of constantly getting excited for every successful play I make, I should be more proactive to think about stating why the play was good, and how I was able to pull it off successfully as Garen. This allows my excitement to be kept in check and for people not too used to watching a really happy individual to become comfortable easier with my presentation rather than think I'm a crazy-excited guy. I know I won't be able to make everyone happy with my bright personality, but I definitely want to refine my commentary to be as appealing as possible.

My transitions were a big hit-and-miss. Looking back on them, I see now that I could have made them near instant (like cross-fade) or had scrapped them completely. For episode three, I'm going to test out much cleaner methods (and quicker stuff like jumpcuts) to make the transition more seemless and not having any deterrence take away from the video.

Many of my fans like being addressed as "Ladies and Gentlemen" however, to new audience members, I used that phrase in excess. Even though I tried being comedic about it later on in the video, I'm beginning to realize that I should try using it sparingly, maybe 2-4 times in a video at the most. What others have suggested is that I mentally prepare myself with filler topics or get into a habit of using different ways to fill up the gaps with meaningful commentary.

Some individuals commented that overall the video could have been shorter for digestion. I definitely agree, and would happily welcome shorter videos to be made by myself in the future, because not only does YouTube algorithms like higher watch retention rates, but my content may be more attractive to newcomers.
Other than that, there were a lot of other miscellaneous suggestions, and a lot of debate as to whether my mask is tolerable or not. I would love any feedback as to how to make Episode 3 and the rest of my commentaries in Season 7 better. Help me become a better content creator, and I'll never forget your kindness and time. Many people did ask me a lot about my Garen choices too - (Why I max Q, keystones, masteries, runes, and ability rotations). Although I will try to answer any questions on that, I do have a lot of Garen-related videos explaining all of that coming out next month, so if you do happen to enjoy my stuff, I hope you look forward to that.
Thank you so much in advance!
