Nihiil the Black Shade

(Tank/Assassin)

As the sun rose and its brilliant light spread across the war torn land, it revealed through smog and smolder, hundreds of slain bodies from the battle that ensued the night before. Within the smog, a figure could be barely seen, black smoke rising from its body like and undying smoldering ash. The figure walked imminently across the battlefield, closer it got now, its form becoming clearer. Towering over the bodies in clad ashen armor, wielding a large thick blade that oozed of smoke like its armor. The locals called it the Black Shade. The story goes that when blood and ash mix it is synonymous to calling its name. That when souls escape the land and dead lay on the earth, summoning it is within reach. Yet only when the ground is tarnished with destruction, war, and despair shall it walk this earth and feed on the ascending souls, taking with him every bit of essence of life in existence. It’s sword the arbiter of existence. As it moved the wind whistled a deathly tune, one that would haunt for eternity; a dirge of the inexistent.

The war between the once peaceful Albrittons and the warmongering Har’lucan began about four months ago. The King of Albritannia sensed the oncoming Har’lucan Horde after the fall of two of its neighboring nations. Albritannia was not only peaceful but its borders were vast and welcomed everyone. Refugees from the other nations sought solace from the evil that was Har’lucan. The Knights of the Fifth Order advised the king on actions he should have taken prior to their invasion of the other nations; to send troops to safeguard their allies. However, the king saw this as an opportunity to safeguard his own people, he would grant refuge to those fleeing the battle but Albritannia would stand neutral to the Har’lucan in hopes that they would sate their hunger for power and land soon. Two of the Knights of the Fifth Order, rode to meet the Har’lucan Horde at the Battle of Le Freyond, in Frescasa, Albritannia’s north-eastern ally, against the order of the king. These two knights felt a since of loyalty to their allies and would not leave them to die.

Har’lucan was once a small impoverished kingdom, thriving only of the trade of one export, silim, which was used as a universal lubricant and polisher for armors and harpoons. Har’lucan had very little military might until a vagabond leader, Kels Crist, overthrew the Har’lucan’s sultan and usurped the throne. His vigor and tenacity, charisma and strategy brought warriors from across the Valorian Seas to join his new nation. It wasn’t long until Har’lucan’s military might rivaled all other nations on the continent. Albritannia was the first to send an emissary to inquire about the diplomatic tactics of the new sultan. Their emissary was met with kindness and hospitality until the day he was supposed to return. The emissary was flayed and his head on a pike. It is on that same day, Har’lucan invaded Frescasa and Karmon. 150,000 armored mercenaries and cavalry, death marched into those nations with no intent to return but only to claim victory for Kels Crist.

The battle of Abe’s Fjord, was the bloodiest battle in the history of Albritannia. The Har’lucan Horde was held back but at the cost of thousands of soldiers on each side. The fumes of blood, death, and stank reeked across the once beautiful fjord. The rivers waters ran red with the blood of both sides. The King of Albritanna, King Ivan III stood with the last five of his knights atop a hill at the north end of the fjord looking down upon the massacre. He could look across and see the devious smile of Kels Crist aside about 20,000 more troops. The Albritannia army was down to about 3,000 and knew they could not survive this day. The Knights of the Fifth Order agreed they could at least take down 100 each and even motivated the king to boost him with a proud number of at least 1000. The hubris of man as they looked down death’s door, sure they could escape the inevitable.

Kels Crist looked at his generals and laughed a dark maniacal laugh. He knew this day was won and he would soon be the victor and conqueror of the entire continent of Eurana. Only three years ago he was the leader of a bandit group that terrorized the coasts and now he stood, the sultan of a massive army and soon an emperor. With a final grunt, his generals began marching there soldiers toward the Albritton camp. The sun began to rise of the horizon and the approaching doom of the Har’lucan horde could be seen in the light but something more, something solely evil began to arise from the center of the battlefield. As dark as the night itself, its smoldering armor plaguing the air around it. The Black Shade was upon them. Its menacing form towered over the Har’lucan forces as they approached unknowingly and fearless. Kels Crist and his forces feared nothing. He only saw it some sorcery of Albritannia and another notch in his belt in conquering Eurana. Their fearlessness became stupidity as the Har’lucan charged the demon head on. A single swing of its blade, it wiped the field clean of life. Kels Crist stood in fear and awe at the darkness that stood before him. It began to walk in the direction of Kels Crist. As it moved an unfamiliar tune, one that curdled the blood, a song of death and suffering, whistled in the air.

Kels Crist ordered the rest of his troops to charge the demon, but to no avail. All was left was him. Their souls had been swallowed whole by the blade of the Black Shade. Kels’s heart began to beat rapidly, a sense of fear he had never had before overcame him. He was never afraid of dying, death was something he looked forward to, however this being made him fear living. Kels began to go insane and yelling shouts at the beast as it inched closer.

It was now standing over him. Almost twice his size the towering being reached down and gripped the neck of Kels Crist. It slowly lifted him off his feet; Kels was flinging about trying to escape the supernatural grip, slowly losing consciousness and breath. The Black Shade brought Kels to where its mouth would be and spoke, “My child, your work here is done.” Kels became ash and rained to the ground.

This phenomenon placed the Albritton forces in a position of fear and awkwardness. King Ivan was in awe and his knights in phalanx surrounded the King for his protection, in fear that the Black Shade would come their way. The other soldiers placed their harpoons atop their shields ready to charge, when given the command. Soldiers are trained not to fear even embodiments of death itself, however even so, fear would still be an internal conflict to be resolved.

The Black Shade turned around and faced the Albritton forces. It roared. Such a demonic roar that the ground reverberated and the air turned vacuum. All plant life turned to ash. The roar destroyed the ear drums of the Albritton forces and turned them to stone. The Black Shade began walking the battlefield, its whistling dirge howling in the wind.
