Item Suggestion: Tactical AD/Armor Hybrid
I've thought of a neat item that would be thematically similar to the deathcap (but for AD), and gargoyle stoneplate. As well as fill a number of gaps in the item list.

At the moment:
- There are few "shield" item's in the mid to late-game.
- There is only one AD/Armor Hybrid item in the game: Guardian Angel, and lets be honest, that's not why people buy it.
- There are no items which provide a % Bonus to AD.
- There are very few items with downsides, and most tactical items in the game are only tactical due to long cooldowns and taking up an item slot.
In the long-standing meta, It's very uncommon for ADC's to build any sort of armor, relying instead on mobility in order to avoid damage, and I'm frankly surprised to see the lack of a "sword and shield" style item, despite the number of champions that appear to be using a sword and shield style of combat. This item would fill this gap, and ideally become a unique tactical item for any AD build, be it for balance, extra AD on an armor build, or extra armor on an AD build.
The item could function in a number of ways, each of which greatly altering the tactical purpose of the item. Here are some examples:
Toggle/Mode: Sword/Shield
Activating the item would toggle between a defensive and offensive state. While in the defensive state, you would take a penalty to damage (similar to the metallicize ability of gargoyle stoneplate
) but the item would be a very efficient cost/stat armor item, providing either bonus armor, or % damage reduction.
While in the offensive state, you would be at a penalty to damage (probably as a % converted to true damage, similar to Death's Dance
Passive.), but would have a % bonus to AD (like an AD deathcap
, or a better sterak's
) making it an initially expensive, but efficient late-game item.
Out-Of-Combat:
The item would automatically toggle between mode's based on context. This could make using the item simpler, but reduce the tactical control. Essentially: If you have not dealt or taken damage for 6 seconds it changes to defensive mode, and remains in defensive mode until you deal damage. (note: As long as you don't attack an enemy, the mode persists even while they are dealing damage to you.) Then, after you next deal damage, it changes to offensive mode, and remains in offensive mode for 6+ seconds until you leave combat. This method would make the first-strike weaker than normal (in contrast to first-strike items like storm-razor
, energized
, magic bolt
, and dead-man's
), reducing the effectiveness of pokes and making it riskier to initiate, while also being rather punishing on enemies who poke and initiate. When used by AD assassins, it could greatly alter the way they're required to play in order to make the best use of this item, and would have a large number of interesting synergies with various items, champions, and abilities. Think of Banshee's Veil , and warmog's.
Active Mode:
The item would function more similarly to most other click-ies. It would provide its passive defensive bonus most of the time, but when activated, would provide a heavy offensive boost for a short period of time (15 seconds?) before going on cooldown. While on cooldown, the defensive bonus could be exchanged with the defensive penalty, causing the item to become more viable to assassin's than adc's, and being used primarily to secure a take-down, leaving you especially vulnerable to follow-up by the enemy jungler, or completely turning the tables on you if you don't succeed in taking down your target before the cooldown hits. It would be similar to spellbinder.
All-in-all, i feel like this item would fill a few unique gaps in the item table, while also becoming a fun and unique tactical selection as well.
TL;DR: Summary of gaps that it fills: A counter against gank's, laning pokes, squishy ADC's. An AD reflection of Rabadon's % AP bonus. An Item with a tactical DE-buff. An AD/Armor Hybrid. Paving the way for an alternative to Juggernaut/Tank/Glass Cannon builds, because there are no hybrid items of this type. A Sword&Shield themed item, because we have plenty enough sword-shield champs that deserve one. An "oh-shit" defensive item that functions despite CC. (Looking at you, Zhonya's, Gargoyles, and every other activated defensive item)
