The Alistar Problem
So, as you might know, there is a new VU in the PBE. One of the smaller new VU's, on of the oldest and cheapest champions in the league, who is normally presented to many fans as a free champ with a free skin, or as the cheapest tank support in the league.
Probably everyone owns Alistar. He is one of the poster child for LoL for a long time, appearing in publicity and artwork, between probably only by Ryze and Katarina (and maybe Annie).
But what is Alistar problem then? Well, Alistar is just a minotaur. That's his whole identity. Jarvan is a prince warrior of honor and glory who has fought in front and beside his men, who happens to be Human. Nami, with her simple garb and "spectacular" scepter, is a Tidecaller, some sort of religious leader that saved her people, and happens to be Marai. Maokai a wretched living creature because of dark magick that shouldn't happen, who despise his creation and continued existence but chooses to continue existence to stop this magick, who happens to be a treant. Ashe is a tribal leader that wants to unite the north under peace, who happens to be human.
Alistar is a Minotaur. Just that. We might know he is/was/has a fetish with being captive, because has chains in his arms. And he only talks about being a cow or stuff. Jarvan talks about his men and honor (and has the single worse, most out of character line in the game "Could I be more epic?), wears regal but alien armor and works very well with the lore. Ashe has a standard issue true ice bow, a gilden attire and a queen's speech. Nami rides the waves, can't stop talking about water and fish (which is ok, but she speaks way too little of her actual character) but her attire and looks make up for a regal fish.
Alistar doesn't have anything that sets him apart from a standard issue JRPG mob. His VO lines are scant and talk just about him being a bull/cow. We have no idea who he is unless we search for a wiki. Why would a former prisoner bear chains? Or use cheap prisoner garb? He WAS imprisoned. Why keep him less individual than a level 1 World of Warcraft minotaur?
Alistar deservers more than a minor upgrade, he needs a lore, model and VO overhaul. If he is only minorly updated, he will be left behind when champs like Azir come with their thousand VO lines and their identity, lowering the quality of League of Legends. THIS IS THE MOMENT, RIOT.
(By the way, those are some ugly horns in most skins. And Unchained Alistar's is now practically the same color for the Classic Skin.)
Riot has underestimated the needs of Alistar.
(And they've done a GREAT work in probably every VU before. Even Kayle is still pretty good to today's standards.)
