[Champion Concept] Vek' La the Forsaken Thaumaturge
NOTE: This page will no longer be updated, please refer to the pdf instead.
I've been working on this concept over a long period and have had great fun in doing so. He is not perfect by any means so any feedback is greatly appreciated! Thank you all for reading!
Edit: I had to reformat this post so that people could read it without going to the pdf in the google drive. With that said, I still strongly recommend going to the pdf in the google drive as it is better formatted and also a lot more in-depth, including a guide, how to play as him, explanation of his abilities and playstyles as well as my thought process and iterations of the champion throughout his development.

GUIDE
Note: this is only a basic guide, if you want to check out the in-depth guide, please refer to the pdf.
Vek' La is a caster support champion, with both defensive and offensive capabilities. Additionally, he also offers utility for allies, but lacks any form of self mobility. Vek' La is also a high skilled champion, both in mechanics and decision making. His kit has many delays in them, but also provides him with many ways to adapt to many situations. The delays provide enemies with a fair way to play against him, but also create a unique champion that emphasizes strategic decision making and mechanics, rather than one or the other. Because of the delays, pre-emptively casting abilities can be what differentiates a good player from a bad one. Target selection is also a key factor in many champions, but moreso in this case. Because Vek' La's entire kit can affect both enemies and allies, it is crucial to know which target to use which abilities on.
Things to take note of: Itemizing health items is highly effective, increasing his damage and healing capabilities but also making him harder to kill. However, due to his low base resistances and high base health, he is more exposed to lethality than other champions and directly itemizing armor or magic resist would serve as a better defensive choice. He has an extremely low base health regeneration during early levels, therefore utilizing his passive will be crucial to staying healthy in the laning phase. Vek' La favors melee support match ups where he can safely utilize his passive to heal himself. Valuable stats on him would include:
- Health
- Armor / Magic Resist
- Cooldown Reduction
- Ability Power

Lore
Thaumaturgy is an ancient magical craft passed through the eons and is often referred to as the art of miracles with many different types of magic, all of which follow a common principal; for a spell to be cast, an equivalent exchange (usually mana) is required. It is a practice that requires great skill, concentration and knowledge to succeed, but most importantly requires a process referred to as inheritance. Inheritance is a process undertaken between a Thaumaturge and their apprentice where the Thaumaturge passes on their ability through metaphysical contact. Without inheritance, one could not utilize the craft, regardless of how talented they were. While it was possible for a Thaumaturge to have more than one apprentice, it was an uncommon practice, thus at any point in history, there were very few Thaumaturges. Kalnyrr was a renown Thaumaturge, considered to be wise and always seeking to advance and expand his craft thus forming the first magical academy of thaumaturgy. However, while many attempted to learn the art, they did not possess the talent. Even across the entire capital, only 30 were considered suitable by Kalnyrr. One student however, was exceptional even among geniuses in the craft. That student was Vek’ La, an orphan that felt nothing but contempt for his parents who had abandoned his elder sister as she suffered from an incurable illness. It would not be an understatement to proclaim Vek’ La as the most talented Thaumaturge to have ever existed. Even at a young age, he mastered difficult concepts that normally require many months or years in the span of weeks. Before even reaching adulthood, he had already inherited the craft from his master. Vek’La set out performing miracles of healing and curing ailments. However, he was never able to cure his sister’s illness. Deeds of his talent spread like wildfire, and he was soon appointed as the court magician, whose role was that of an advisor, guardian and counsellor. Furthermore, the court magician had total control over all other sorcerers in the castle, all of whom were exceptional magicians. The rank of court magician was only given to those who stood above all others, who was usually of a respectable age. Vek’ La’s appointment as a young thaumaturge provoked jealousy within the other sorcerers, however Vek’ La silenced them by shaming them in front of their colleagues, defeating all of them in a duel where he was vastly outnumbered. Court magicians alongside a minor few were granted special privilege to enter the sacred grand library. The grand library, was considered a myth among many, and was said to contain knowledge from the ancient times since the arrival of humanity on Runeterra. The library was a secret space separated from the physical realm, requiring very specific conditions to enter. The library contained a wealth of knowledge, spanning across many millennia. When Vek’ La entered the library, he was surrounded by thousands, no, hundreds of thousands if not millions of books, spanning across the room with a bookshelf on either side. The library’s contents extended beyond visibility, seemingly an endless shelf of books.
Upon closer inspection, Vek’ La noticed that the two bookshelves were immensely different. On his left was an ebony black shelf shrouded by a thin mist. The other side contained an exceedingly plain and aged wooden bookshelf, with small slithers of cracks and gaps and bits of moss covering its exterior.
Vek’ La spent many months and years studying the library, determined to find a cure for his sister. However, Vek’ La never touched the books on the ebony bookshelf, afraid of the consequences that forbidden magics would bring.
With his newfound knowledge and power, he attempted to cure his sister’s illness but to no avail. Even with the knowledge he obtained, the magics of Thaumaturgy were not omnipotent.
“Why are we called the practitioners of miracles if we can’t even cure a single girl?” Vek’ La roared in intense frustration and anger.
He journeyed across many lands to find a cure, reaching out to practitioners of other magics but always without accomplishment. His sister’s health began to decline significantly, and only one option remained. With seemingly no known magic able to cure his sister, he delved into the forbidden books of the grand library. Manipulating life was not just a forbidden art, it was also extremely difficult to perform. Vek’ La spent all of his time awake slaving away, performing experiment after experiment. After months of constant experimentation, Vek’ La had perfected the spell. He had resurrected a dead rat. He performed the spell again and again, until all the rats were alive once more. The rats squeaked among themselves, confused at the events that had just transpired.
In pure excitement, his heart pounded faster than ever before. He had done it. Vek’ La rushed home to his sisters’ side envisioning a merry future ahead of them.
As he held her delicate and meager frame in his arms, he lowered his face to her and whispered in a gentle voice “Everything will be alright now”.
His sister gave a weak, but tender smile as she looked back at him. As he chanted the spell, a light blue glow enveloped his sister’s body. He could see the life return to his sister. Her eyes were brimming, shinning beautifully with a magnificent violet color, her cheeks were flushed with pink, while her body no longer seemed thin and fragile, but now slim and healthy.
Vek’ La was thrilled that his magic had worked, but more importantly, his sister had been saved. He allowed his sister to rest and ventured to report his success to his master Kalnyrr but was met with disapproval. His master was furious. This was the first time Vek’ La had ever seen his master act this way. With a disheartened face, Kalnyrr banished Vek’ La and stripped him of his title as a Thaumaturge.
Cursing his master, he criticized the lack of advancement in thaumaturgy as a result of the shortsightedness of the Thaumaturge’s outdated rules. Vek’ La pondered as he returned to his workshop. Why shouldn’t he be able to unveil the forbidden secrets of an art if it meant saving others? Vek’ La entered his workshop in frustration slamming the door on his way in. He sat down contemplating in silence. Silence. Why was it so quiet? Vek’ La looked around his cluttered workshop. The rats that were resurrected were awfully quiet. Perhaps this was a symptom of resurrection he thought as he ventured to take a closer look. Upon inspection, his face paled as he realized that the resurrection spell had failed. All the rats were dead once more. To give life, one must take it first. Mana could not act as a substitute to life essence. He had forgotten the simplest of principals. His experiment had failed. Concerned for his sister, Vek’ La scrambled home with haste, disregarding the angry cries of people he clashed into along the way. He urgently thrust the door to his home open. There, he found his sister’s body, no longer the healthy girl she was just a while ago. Instead, she lay there lifelessly. Not moving. Not breathing. His sister was dead. Instead of saving her, his arrogance had instead hastened her death instead. Stricken with despair and grief, he left his home as an empty shell, leaving everything behind. For many years, Vek’ La had wondered aimlessly. The name of Vek’ La the Prodigy of Miracles was forgotten by all except one. The king had sent summons to Vek’ La. The queen had been poisoned from the blade of an assassin. After exhausting the kingdom’s greatest priests, surgeons and sorcerers, the king had finally requested the presence of Vek’ La who suddenly withdrew from the role of court magician with no one to substitute. Upon answering the summons, Vek’ La was faced with a situation where even he was unable to save the queen’s life. Furthermore, he refused to use the Life magic he had learned, instead keeping its existence a secret. By the time the king’s trusted general, Kalista had returned to report on the status of finding a cure, the queen had died, and the grief-stricken king had already succumbed to madness. After Vek’ La learned of the king’s attempt to revive his queen, he bargained with the mad king; to perform the ritual in exchange for having the opportunity to perform the same ritual for his dead sister. Thus, the king, accompanied by Kalista, Hecarim, Vek’ La and a band of soldiers set sail to the blessed isles. Upon arrival the king marched towards the center of the island and was confronted by the master of the island’s guardians. The guardian denied the king from resurrecting his wife, telling the king that it was cheating death. In a fit of rage, the king ordered Kalista to kill the guardian. Kalista refused and spoke of the great man he had once been, but her appeals fell on deaf ears and he again ordered the guardian's death. Kalista called on Hecarim to stand with her, Hecarim stepped towards Kalista as if to stand at her side, but instead drove his spear through her back in a monstrous act of betrayal. A brutal melee erupted, with those devoted to Kalista fighting desperately against Hecarim and his knights. Despite their courage and skill, their numbers were too few and Hecarim's men slew them to a man. When Kalista and all her warriors had fallen, Hecarim and his knights in a murderous rampage slew all of inhabitants of the island until a lantern-bearing wretch finally led the king to what he sought. Under the king’s orders, Vek’ La destroyed the seal separating life and death and using the Isle’s sacred forest as a source of power, Vek’ La resurrected the queen. However, the queen was an abomination of decaying flesh permeating with countless maggots. Horrified by his own actions, the king cast a spell ending both their lives and binding them together for all eternity. The sorcerer’s ritual had succeeded, but beyond expectations. A hurricane of black mist surrounded the king, spreading across the island and killing everything it touched. Vitality seeped from every living thing in the Shadow Isles: great trees withered into gnarled husks, people warped into twisted shades, and forest spirits became hollow wisps. Realizing the consequences of his actions, Vek’ La swiftly casted numerous protection spells on himself. All his fellow sorcerers succumbed almost instantaneously, their spells ineffective, and their life oozed quickly out of their body. Even Vek’ La was not left unaffected by the effects of the black mist. However, unlike his peers, he had retained his human body, however his heart and mind had darkened beyond human recognition. Vek’ La was no longer the man he once was. Whilst he did not descend to darkness, Vek’ La no longer possessed any of the emotions that made him human. He no longer felt grief at the loss of his sister, instead, he felt disdain for those wasting their lives away. As time passed, he became more obsessed with life itself and eventually, his disdain turned into contempt. Vek’ La began absorbing the life of those he deemed unworthy of living. He had become a specter, existing between the realms of life and death. For thousands of years, his twisted sense of justice reaped the live of untold numbers of people; villagers, bandits, knights, even kings. Young or old, it mattered little. Their bodies were sapped of all life, leaving behind an empty husk of their remains. Their life essence absorbed by the ominous orbs that encircle Vek’ La. To this day, many consider his existence a myth, often told to deter misbehaving children from mischief. That is… until they find themselves staring straight at death itself… Yet, beyond death exists something far more terrifying than the embrace of death.
