Volibear -- Reworked [From An Old Main's Perspective]

Greetings!

I've been a fan of Volibear's kit and play style since season 2, because it felt exclusive, and it remained relevant through the majority of metas, say for the most recent. His play style values meta-specific tactics and items builds, which contribute to him not feeling useful in most situations nowadays.

Ive given his ability set a lot of thought and, Ive come up with a new retroactive design for his kit that not only maintains his legacy and originality, but opens up his character to more possible uses.

I'll make this short and sweet!

**Passive- Chosen of the Storm

  • Volibear heals rapidly for a few seconds when his Health drops to a critical level. "Additionally, Volibear gains a percentage of his Amor/MR while below 30% health." ** I love his passive, because its one of the things that makes him Volibear, however its incredibly annoying that a simple ignite or healing reduction can reduce his passive to nothing, so I would add this increase in resistance.

**Q - Rolling Thunder

  • Volibear drops to all fours and runs faster. This bonus speed increases when chasing enemy champions. The first enemy he attacks is thrown backwards over Volibear. "While active, Volibear gains tenacity based on his level." ** This ability is what currently defines his play-style, and simultaneously his weaknesses. Adding a bit of tenacity would boost to his mid-late game viability.

**W - Frenzy

  • Volibear's repeated attacks grant him additional Attack Speed. Once Volibear has repeatedly attacked three times, he can perform a vicious bite on his target which deals increased damage based on the target's missing Health. If Volibear bites a minion or monster, or KILLS ENEMY TARGET, Frenzy's cooldown is reduced by 50%, AND IT'S MANA COST IS REFUNDED.

** "I would keep this ability as is, arguably because this is his most powerful/scaling ability in his arsenal. Without this, Volibear would'nt be viable at all."

**E- Chaos of the Storm

  • Volibear strikes with such force that lightning is emitted, chaining to up to 4 extra targets. This ability is a toggle, and each auto consumes mana until it Volibear's mana is depleted. ** "This is where the real rework starts, having a toggle-able, scaling auto-attack buff that has synergy with his W while not overpowering it. "

**R- Majestic Roar

  • Volibear lets out a powerful roar that FEARS, slows, and damages ALL ENEMY CHAMPIONS in his surrounding area. Enemies who are airborne or dashing are dealt additional damage. Minions and monsters are feared as well.**

"This will relieve Volibear's reliance on his Q by shifting it to another form of CC being his R, and will open new avenues of engage and new combo opportunities."

I think the swapping of his E and R will dynamically change the way Volibear is seen at his current state, and dramatically improve his overall enjoyment while playing. Let me know what you guys think! ;-) Volibear

I have to disagree with your suggested rework. I believe it may cripple his playstyle significantly. Here's why:

  • I think you underestimate the power of this E change. It will make his jungle clear speed and wave clear insane. But this leads to unhealthy gameplay as most Tank champions don't have constant exceptional waveclear like this. In terms of balance, the damage will have to be severely gutted, which could potentially make this skill pretty useless...
  • Moving his Fear and slow to his ult really hurts his trade potential and sticking potential in general. First of all, the fear on minions in lane is exceptionally useful as it enables Volibear to trade for free without minion harass. Secondly, the slow allows Volibear to stick to his enemy and continuously deal more auto attack damage, utilizing his W's passive. In jungle, the fear actually helps out quite a bit as it negates some damage from monster aggro. This allows him to finish his clears faster and be relatively healthy compared to other junglers, enabling him to gank more in the early game.
  • With this change, Volibear's ganking potential is hurt significantly. Currently Volibear's strength is his early game ganks. At this point, most players don't have substantial movement speed to outrun him nor the damage to burst him down. His current E, usually in combination with his Q, is a very strong gank and follow up tool. Without it, his ganks feel a lot more subpar. Your change however, will make Volibear completely ult reliant to pull of ganks effectively, making him a mid-game champion. Thus you significantly hurt his early game gank potential, which is a lead he NEEDS to stay relevant throughout the game.
