Lots of suggestions for URF
I would like to throw up the suggestion of URF cooldown time. Where you'd have to wait several minutes between each game OR something along the lines of you can only play a certain amount of URF games per day. Maybe you have to play a certain amount of normal games before being able to play urf games.
Maybe you can get "urf tokens" that allow you to play a game of urf (This allows people to binge games still, but putting a cap on tokens you can hold would still allow for healthy play. Heck you could even make "rotating game mode tokens." It would be beneficial to make these drop at random or only from wins however as otherwise, people would lose games on purpose to gain these.)
And the business major side of me has to also throw up the idea that since Riot is for profit, you could allow people to buy urf tokens. It would keep people from playing too much urf (except for the super rich kids or kids that save up for urf games) while allowing f2p players to play it. It would allow Riot to earn that money to improve League overall. It might unfortunately, give Riot a lot of backlash from the community about "Omg riot is pay to play" etcetc. But I mean, at least it's better than not having urf - right? This is of course only if the principles of this idea line up with Riot's values. The best way to probably implement this would be by surveying the fan base. Would you rather have 1: No urf 2: ARURF 3: URF tokens [insert explanation of urf tokens here]
Now, beyond the potential issue of people playing too much urf is people raging from urf itself. Maybe lower the buff in urf? That way it's still urf, but like... not cancerous at times. (I honestly wanted to try nurf btw when that joke came out - Where everything is nerfed. Slower gameplay would honestly could make for some interesting strategy.) The multiple option arurf idea getting tossed around also sounded nice too. Maybe arurf but you get to choose 20 champions that the pool is selected from. So you still get some option, but aren't always playing the same champs. YO. MIRRORED URF? Urf on other maps too? Urf but you can ban spells? Urf but riot cycles through a permaban list of certain champs throughout the urf season. This could be decided on by data analysis of win-rates. Start with a control group week with no bans, then select a handful of op champs, ban them for a week/day or 2, and repeat. Urf but you only gain the buff when you're losing. Urf but the buff cycles from a single team member to the next every minute. 1 or 2 buffs on each team. Urf but the buff is a summoner spell with cooldown. Urf but you can buy the buff from shop as a temporary elixer. Urf, but when you kill someone, the buff transfers to them (or their teammate if the person killed is already buffed.) Urf, but the buff is a summoner spell toggle where you lose and increased amount of health over time. There is a cooldown for re-toggling. ... Urf but you only gain the buff when you're Draven... and everybody must play Draven. Urf but everybody plays teemo, all your spells are mushrooms, you get 50 mushrooms per person, and all forms of vision sweeping are disabled.
I personally, have been a long-time player (Pre- Season 1) and at one point did sorta stop playing league when the SR meta got boring and slow. At one point, URF and certain gamemodes were the main reason I came back to play. I will say that playing nid on URF improved my skill shot capabilities and coming back into normal games, I ended up enjoying skill shot champs much more due to my practice in the hyperbolic time chamber that was once URF.
URF definitely fatigues me. I probably wouldn't have played so ravinously though if it was offered more consistently. At one point, I thought you guys (Riot) were purposefully offering urf at random times so that people would log on a lot more just to check if urf was there. It's that psychological trick of scarcity and fomo.
But that's just me. And honestly, if you guys really want to know what happened to those hordes of players that just left after URF seasons, I think it'd be best to just ask them. Send incentivized surveys, call them, etc. (make sure they all weren't just farm and bot accounts too)
Because whether they thought urf was as good as league was gonna get, whether urf really did make them rage from league forever, whether they thought the meta or overall gameplay was getting stale, whether they were looking for a reason to quit league and urf was their big blowout,
I think we're all curious about what happened to a minority of our playerbase that made our favorite gamemode disappear as well.
Thanks, Calvin
