Mid Season Magic sprinkled on Skarner

Hello all you summoners and calling all Skarner players!

I started playing league of legends in season two, near the end of the season, and have been playing ever since. Back when I was learning the game and finding champs I liked, I discovered this wonderful little bug named Skarner. I messed around with him and fell in love with him and wound up maining him for the next three seasons.

So when it came time for my favorite champ to get a rework I was excited! What would they do with him? What was gonna change? What new abilities will he have? What's his strategy etc. Well what came out of it was a workable champion that's seen more jokes laid on him than time on the rift. And after having seen the Mid Season Magic Dev stream this last week and the comments about only working champions that the team has a solid idea for what they want that champion to due, I was inspired to think about what idea Skarner would be based around if he were to receive a proper rework that could see him back on the rift with the best of them.

Firstly let's think about niches, minor roles that junglers fill, things that they do that another champ doesn't. For example, if an enemy team takes a bunch of tanks you might consider taking shyvana, who devourers tanks (literally in two bites.... Get it). As anther example, if you're looking to set up your teams wombo combo you might take amumu to root the whole enemy team. So what do you take Skarner for? Jokes? Troll game? BMing their yaso? What if Skarner was that one champion you took to keep the other team from having a good engage on you for teamfight or for keeping cuaght badies from getting away?

Skarner has always been that one champion that you can't get away from (except you can). He's always had a certain stickiness to him that lends itself to chasing down your enemies and impaling them to drag them back in to your lair.
"Lair" okay, keep that word in mind. So when you think about a big scary scorpion running through the jungle, his lair, your first thought really shouldn't be "I'm going to invade" right? Skarner strikes me as that one champion that when he finds you, or you find him, you should really have to think about whether you want to fight him where you are, is my team close, can I get out if this goes badly or will I be impaled and dragged into the nest?

Imagine for the next few minutes that Skarner operated like a trap based bait champion, and if you're not quite sure what I mean keep reading, it'll come to you. And this will be splashing some of that mid season magic, so hold on to your death caps and enjoy.

Skarner - The Crystal Vanguard Strategy: Using his crowd control abilities, Skarner sticks to targets and keeps the enemy from escaping his crystal field, keeping the in his lair until it's to late for them to escape.

Passive: Crystal Energy Hitting a target with an ability charges Skarner with crystal energy, increasing his attack speed by an amount for as long as he is charged and grants him an amount of on hit magic damage. (Skarner at the moment isn't all that scary by himself, he needs teammates to back him up. This gives enemies enough reason to fear Skarner being stuck to them.)

Q - Crystal Slash Remains as is, with an increase in damage. In addition, while Skarner is inside the radius of his Crystalline Terrian's effect, casting Q extends the duration of the terrain by an amount of time. (Crystal Slash is skarners go to ability for damage, however, for Skarner being juggernaut he does surprisingly little damage. Ramp of the Q a bit and make it a bit more impactful.)

W - Crystalline Terrain Skarner plant is claws into the soil and summons forth a field of crstals that radiate energy for a duration, duration increased with level. While in the field Skarner gains a shield equals to a % of his maximum HP and a movement speed bonus for a certain amount, scaling with level. Enemies are Grounded while within the field. Casting abilities inside of Crystalline Terrain extends the duration for an amount of time.

(This is the aforementioned "lair" and the central idea behind my concept. Skarner currently has fields he can fight on but they are set locations that enemies can keep for themselves or avoid altogether. And what happens when Skarner is forced into base? GG. So what if Skarner could put one of those fields anywhere? And they were really something the other team did not want to fight in?)

E - Fracture Keep it relatively the same but take off the stun proc and maybe adjust the slow amount and duration as well as the cooldown. What's bad about a linear aoe skill shot that slows the majority of targets hit? Not a lot, that's really strong if you stop to think about it. Extends W duration.

R - IMPALE Don't change a thing! Stabbing people is fun. Extends W duration. In conclusion, the entire ide would be that skarner fights you and puts the field down around himself ( target location) and fights you on it, like trundle does. He's charged so he hurts a bit and you have to choose whether to run away so you can use escapes if you have to or stay where you are Grounded. Skarner has plenty of damage to fight where he wants and cc to keep you where he wants, on his crystal field! Skarner can use the grounding to escape if things look bad and keep enemies from getting away from his claws. It also has some interesting team implications that I feel would bring nice balance to all those champs out there that dip, duck, dive and Dodge that you cant keep a hold of.

Thanks for reading guys!!!

I will be back, I will post here. I have played Slarner since release. I have thoughts on this topic. Also thank you, Skarners kit has been begging for a lair type ability since his release.

As a Skarner player, I think he's fine.

I'd rather not have someone 'rework' him again, leaving massive holes in his direction/development, while also simultaneously having him get nerfed and left to rot.

This iteration of Skarner is the closest to something you can call a 'success'. I don't want to risk worse.
