PROJECT: Ashe, Ekko, Kat Borders. How does it work?

I understand you need to buy the icon to get the ability to unlock the border for the loading screen. But what if you unlocked the border, but don't have the skin? If you unlock the border for Ashe say now, and a month later you buy the skin, will you get in border or do you have to do it together while the PROJECT crafting is still live?
