Molonym, the Spellthief

Name: Molonym

Age: appears to be in early 20’s

Description: Molonym is quite pale and has white hair, like fresh fallen snow. His eyes are silver but with an odd aged look, and he has a fine-boned angular face, with a slight curve of his eyes. He looks youthful, partially because of his slightness. He is always seen wearing a black baggy robe with a hood pulled back, and an aged pair of cargo pants with frayed bottoms. The enchanted blade he uses for his Q is also the blade he auto attacks with and it glows a faint blue when he uses the ability; aside from that, it remains plain when attacking. On his feet are basic black boots and when he dashes for his ult, he always steps with his left foot. When in possession of another person’s ult and when using it, his body glows white and his robe pulses with runes.

Allies: Ekko, Jinx Rivals: Caitlyn, Viktor, Vi

Lore

In the slums of Zaun, many orphaned children have to steal to survive. Living in rough times, in a ruined part of a decrepit city, Molonym had to follow the age old tradition of thievery just to live. He had to be fast on his feet, and even quicker with his fingers, to get food for his friends and himself.

Whether it was divine influence or a side effect from the exposure to the rouge magic and chemicals in Zaun’s toxic air, Molonym found one day that he could do more than steal items from people; he could steal their precious talents. Whether the talents were battle forged or mutated into the person, natural born or even from beyond the mundane world, if Molonym could see himself doing it, he did it.

In the early beginnings, Molonym didn’t know what he had managed to steal. He was sneaking through the back ally of the slums and found a rather large man lying against a building. When he had approached them man, he took a quick step, slipped a hand inside the man’s pocket, and twisted to run away. Little did he know he had attempted to pilfer the pockets of the Madman of Zaun, Doctor Edmundo. With a snarl, the madman chase after him and attempted his signature Sadism technique, only to have it fail. With what he thought was luck, Molonym sprinted away as fast as he could, disappearing from sight, throwing whatever he has stolen to the side like trash. The glittering mass of talent fell glittering out of sight and shattered on the floor.

Months after the encounter, Molonym discovered what his gift was through experimentation. Much to his relief, he found that it revitalized his soul and gave him a glimpse of the powers others held; others who occasionally were much more fortunate than he was. With this realization, he pledged to no one in particular that we would take other’s abilities and raise himself out of the slums on the talent of others.

Abilities

P – Criminal Intent/Spell Siphon

Criminal Intent

Whenever an enemy champion is near Molonym, a bag shaped mark appears over his head that only Molonym can see. If the bag looks like it is filled with coins, it means the enemy has their Ultimate available. Conversely, if it is empty, it means the ultimate is on cooldown and the “bag” will gradually fill to indicate the enemy’s cooldown.

Spell Siphon

Each consecutive Auto Attack and Ability used on the same enemy champion steals mana equal to 2% of damage dealt. If the enemy Champion runs out of mana/resource completely, Molonym's next ability/auto attack will be a Critical Hit and Silences for 3 seconds.

Cooldown: 10 seconds

Comments: Basically, this passive is more of an ability to see his opponents intentions to help plan for attacks and when to use his ultimate. Without this passive, his ultimate could be wasted. Edit added an additional passive to solidify his title as Spellthief.

Q – Swindler’s Blade

Molonym pulls out a knife and throws it in a straight line, striking all enemies it passes through and stopping at the first enemy champion hit. If thrown from a bush or while under the effects of Evasive Maneuvers, the enemy champion is surprised and is stunned for 1 second. Minions take 50% increased damage.

Damage: 60 / 100 / 140 / 180 / 220 (+30% Bonus AP) Cost: 60 Mana Cooldown: 13 / 12 / 11 / 10 / 9 seconds Range: 875

W – Evasive Maneuvers

Molonym becomes invisible for 3 seconds and has increased movement speed. While invisible, he can still be hit with hard CC and becomes visible when struck.

Movement Speed Boost: 10% / 15% / 20% / 25% / 30% (+40% Bonus AP) Cost: 40 / 45 / 50 / 55 / 60 Mana Cooldown: 15 / 14 / 13 / 12 / 10 Seconds Comments: This is Molonym’s only escape tool, aside from summoners and items.

E – Desperate Times

When toggled, Molonym’s Auto Attacks deal additional Magic Damage on hit. Desperate Times drains mana per attack.

Damage: 20 / 25 / 30 / 35 / 40 (+45% Bonus AP)(+50% Bonus AD) Cost: 5 mana per Auto Attack Cooldown: 2 seconds

Comments: At higher Attack Speeds, Molonym can easily clear waves at the cost of heavy mana usage. The mana drain is per attack instead of per second, which can be a blessing at low attack speed, but a curse at higher attack speed.

R – The Perfect Heist

First Stage / 1 point in Ult

Molonym dashes forward and steals target enemy champion’s iconic attack (Ultimate), putting the opponent’s R on instant cooldown, no mana expended for opponent. However, Molonym is unable to see the use of what he stole, so he throws it away without using it and uses one of his set R phrases.

Second Stage / 2 points in Ult

Molonym dashes forward and steals target enemy champion’s iconic attack (Ultimate), putting the opponent’s R on instant cooldown and steals mana equal to the amount of mana required to use target opponents attack, restoring his own mana reserves. However, as grateful he is for the mana, he still finds no use in the spell he stole, so he throws it away.

Final Stage / 3 points in Ult

Molonym dashes forward and steals target enemy champion’s iconic attack (Ultimate), putting the opponent’s R on instant cooldown and steals mana equal to the amount of mana required to use target opponents attack, restoring his own mana reserves. Molonym is now also able to grasp the concept of what he stole, and is able to use opponent’s ability within 5 seconds of stealing it. In the case of form changing abilities, he simply tosses it away with an animation and uses one of his set R phrases.

Cost: 100 / 100 / Undefined Mana Cooldown: 180 / 150 / 120 Seconds Range: 600

Notes: In the case of abilities that use energy, the mana restored is equal to the energy stolen. If the ability uses a different resource or requires no mana, no mana is restored to Molonym.

(skipped everything until the passive, i don't know much about story telling and stats, so i skipped those)

Passive: he can see enemies ult timer. (basically useless until they reach level 6 and in vision)

Q - pretty standard, some interaction with the W W - short invisibility skill, similar to Wukongs, but without a decoy E - toggle empower attacks drains mana per use R - disables Enemies ready ult, puts it on cooldown. added ranks add new effect. (even at max rank, it's non-impactful)

in term of his abilities, his gameplay offers nothing new. there are many champions that do it better, Twitch or Eve. His ULT is non-impactful, and doesn;t do anything significant early on. he is more likely to be killed in combat as priority one due to his ult. it wouldn't take long for players to counterplay his abilities and he doesn't sound fun to play.

He has a great story, but as a champion he lacks impact and a unique gameplay element.

Rework his abilities and Ult.

I'm seeing a lot of room for the expansion of this idea.

Lore/appearance:

Being a spellthief in a city of techmaturgy could also mean that Molonym can use the power science to replicate, or modernize real magic. As he stands currently, he could be copy/paste dropped into most of the lore regions - due to his relatively bland fantasy theme. He may need both a visual and thematic push to really solidify his place in the Zaunite slums. There are a lot of ways to pursue this, but I'm not here to tell you how to proceed with that. It is your creative vision after all, but it just needs some more unique direction, and a bit more thought on your part.

Passive:

This could use a bit of a touch-up.

The first passive should be an ult passive - available only when Molonym unlocks his respective ult. It makes little-to-no sese to have the forst 8 minutes or so of the game to see a bunch of empty bag signifiers - especially when it provides no real benefit. This is not a bad idea, it just might not be in the right place.

The 2nd passive feels a little anti-fun, and not very well executed. I'm not sure what would happen if Molonym were to attack a champion who uses stamina, or just straight-up cooldown, but maybe there is a way to translate this to being any kind of AP damage recovers mana while dealing damage. Or, he adds 30% of any kind of healing to his mana reserve as well - which might make it a bit more functional, and could align with his other abilities somehow.

Q:

This could be a great chance to have a poke ability that isn't like Katarina's. Where it stands, I see the "Thief" in "Spellthief," but maybe there is a better way of doing this? For a champion with pretty good waveclear and sustain, there might be a better, riskier kind of poke that features more sound counterplay methods and/or originality.

W:

Pretty standard invisibility move here. It's ok. Not a whole lot to write about honestly.

E:

Like this as kind-of a base AA modifier, but this could be your chance for an ability to make your passive really count.

R:

Ever heard of an art/animation team? If the critics of this piece don't like this ability, any experienced artist out there is also rolling their eyes. Something like this carries immense balancing issues - as well as an extremely tedious process for asset implementation.

If there are ults that he "can't use," I'm not sure why you would ever approach an enemy champion whose ult you cannot steal - knowing damn well that you don't possess any other trump card besides using theirs against them. You are immediately put at both a massive disadvantage, or an incredibly OP advantage - one that isn't just set in terms of counterpicking or outplaying (both healthy ways to conteract enemy strategy). This goes above and beyond, and somewhat shatters the worth of one champion's ultimate over another. Champions like Karthus, Bard, and Yoric have ults that practically define their teamfights, and are horrendously costly on cooldown. Having someone cancel such an ability is awful as is, but for them to steal it to use right back at you. . . it is a bit overkill. Simple idea, yes, but it can be completely gamebreaking. On the other hand, some champions don't even have an "ult," but rather a fairly normal 4th ability, or a transform.

Overall

It feels a bit, dare I say, stale. There are a lot of ways that this could feel a bit more like its own champion, and not so much a conglomerate of abilities. Maybe the thievery could present itself differently. how, you might ask? You may need to look deeper into what makes Molonym truly a character. That might help you get a better bearing for a moveset that would more properly align with what he might do, and find a more cohesive kit strategy in that discovery. It might take a bit of thought and really diving into the spellthief concept a bit more, but you're almost there - I'm sure you can almost taste it.

Keep up the good work!

I'm glad that you see the possibility space for a thief champion in League, it's a wonderful archetype and fantasy that I would love to see made real. I am totally biased though because I have my own thief champion, and she does a lot of little things that Molonym might could adopt or draw inspiration from.

His Passive: Having info on the enemy ult timers is pretty valuable. The real passive though, is that mana steal, which Riot refuses to do because it's unfun. I agree, and there are a lot of problems that others have pointed out about different resources. On top of it, he Crits and Silences, which does make him pretty deadly. There's no way that mana burn would ever see the light of day.

His Q: A ranged stun on a champion with invisibility? *Laughs

His W: I like invisibility. I want to see more of it in League. I think this is a rather basic way to go about it though. I do like that it has innate counterplay (him being knocked out of it.) There is a missed opportunity here. If he went invisible, at the cost of being nearsighted, he would have a fair amount of counter play (he can't see the enemies) and it would create the feeling that he was in the dark.

His E: This is a powerful ability, but I don't think it captures anything particularly cool or unique about his character. He just deals more damage at the cost of going mana hungry? (I guess that is flavorful.) I'm not sure he really feels like a thief so much a brawler like Jax. He wants to close in on you and start beating you up.

His R: I actually had something like this as Imoen's R a long time ago. I like that it's a dash, but this design probably isn't possible. As Bobo113 mentions, "Something like this carries immense balancing issues - as well as an extremely tedious process for asset implementation." I don't like how you have it's functionality changing as he ranks it up.

As far as his appearance and lore goes, it does feel too generic. Zaun has a very unique and distinct feel to it, as you can see with champs like Jinx and Ekko, but none of this is reflected in Molonym. He doesn't have any cool gadgets or hextech gear. He does have white hair and silver eyes and glows white and has his cloak light up when he steals the enemy ult, but again that just kinda makes him feel like a vanilla young-adult fantasy novel / anime main character, rather than an iconic League of Legends champ.

I also think it's strange that he steals something just to throw it aside. My thief girl steals things but she also goes around hiding stuff she's stolen in the past in different spots, because its cute and she likes secrets and always remembers where she's been and hidden things. It's like a game to her. The treasure and money isn't the goal, but the challenge of the theft itself. Poor Molonym just steals because he's a punk / thug / hooligan(?) in a harsh / grimdark place just so him and the other orphans don't starve or have desperate times.

Just my 2 cents. No hard feelings. I'd be interesting in knowing your opinion on Imoen, but good until then GL;HF in the CCOS!
