Custom Skins Risks/Rewards

I have recently been looking in to implementing custom skins. I own many official skins and would love to tap into the creative diversity and the sheer number of options available in the modding community, but the actual risks involved are hard to find and many are outdated. So, I wanted to know, per the most recent information out there, the risks involved with implementing custom skins (beyond the potential of viruses from bogus skins). I have heard tell of the need to reinstall the game (basically) with each new patch, or at least "repack"(unsure as to what that means entirely) the custom skin files which, either way, is a lengthy process for what would boil down to having to do it weekly. Is riot cracking down on mods and mod users and banning those using external files? The main worry is the potential need to reinstall or "repack" as I've seen with each new patch. Clarification along with more risks vs. rewards would be greatly appreciated.

Usually with a modding software, it should have a way to revert the process it went to make the skin you downloaded and installed, uninstalled and the original skin have all its files moved back.

Possible errors from this include: The champion will be covered in a sheet of dark blue, and all effects will only show hitboxes, rather than particle effects. When trying to use the champion or view it in any game will cause the game to crash and ask you to reinstall game files. If this occurs, I recommend reinstalling the game. Upon going back into the update downloader, it will look for missing files and install them.

The reward is basically you now have a custom skin, possibly with shop/loading screen splash art, sounds, effects, or even animations.

The downside of this, is it could corrupt your game, could contain a virus if you just saw pictures and didn't read the comments about the download, and everyone who is using the skin you chose to overwrite will also show as that skin being used instead.

As well, no one else but you can see this change, as it is on your computer only, not theirs.

[Edit] I don't recommend getting skins that are actually owned by Riot this way, as it's illegal and considered theft of intellectual property.
