How does someone become a moderator on the forums?

How Do You Meta··3 votes·1,041 views

I think it would be nice if mods had some extra helping hands, but I can't find the section to apply and I do not know what are the requirements, can someone please help me learn more about this position?

They don't have player mods at the moment.

So it is #Team Robots then?

As Daen mentioned, they outsource their moderation to humans.

That's a bit of a misleading statement, though -- they still train the moderators themselves -- so perhaps I should say they outsource their mod staff.

So in other words, it is impossible to become one?

Yes.

I mean, technically you could figure out which company they use, get a job at that company, and become a mod, but I'm pretty sure you're talking about becoming a player mod.

Well that is just a messed up situation, why would Riot Game(s) outsource mods so that no one can apply to become one that actually reads these forums?

I think it's likely attributed to two main factors:

  1. With outsourced moderators that report to an internal leadership structure (Tamat, Pendragon, etc.) they can more accurately tune the action and ensure everything is consistent.
  2. Community moderation takes a lot of additional infrastructure and policy to have it work successfully.

In addition to what Daen said, it's also a very common thing for companies to do, unless they hire mods themselves.

Speaking as a mod who worked on gaming forums for something like six years, you usually don't want mods who are part of the community. That introduces opportunities for bias, favoritism, and double standards that make all sorts of things more complicated. That's why, on the sites I worked for, they rarely if ever recruited active moderators to police the forums they participated heavily on unless they thoroughly interviewed them and were assured they wouldn't be biased, and even then often had admins looking over their shoulder just to make sure. General policy was to recruit someone and have them police a forum they had nothing to do with to prevent them from getting in a situation where they had to discipline a friend or respected member of their own community.

The moderators are, to my knowledge, sourced through a third party such as Metaverse. They aren't directly pulled from the Boards community, though Tamat has mentioned that they do require/heavily prefer moderators that were familiar with the platform before being brought in.

Judging by the downvotes, the OP was referring to player moderators. They don't have any, as Hyrum mentioned, thus there's nowhere to apply to become one.

I hope they have somewhere to apply anyways ;c

Does that mean they just pay total "strangers" to post all these useful replies?

Does that mean they just pay total "strangers"

Technically we're all strangers, but for all intents and purposes yes. They train them beforehand and have continued to train the moderators throughout the evolution of the platform.

post all these useful replies?

What replies are you seeing from moderators?

MXXIV1 votes

On a second thought, I may have mistaken moderators for 'reds'.

Daen1 votes

Ah. All red responses are Rioters hired into the company to do a job (e.g. Skins Analyst, Systems Engineer),

As mentioned previously, moderators are outsourced and the program is maintained by Rioters.
