It used to do that and it was really nice, but it hasn't for a bit now. Was it a mistake in the first place? Something randomly trigger it not happening anymore? Intentional?

I for one liked it doing that.
For some if not all browsers, clicking with the middle mouse button (scroll wheel) will open a link in a new tab. You won't have to wait for them to change anything.
Personally, I think that clicking a link should open it in the same tab and control + click should open it in a new tab. I don't recall if this is the case on links within threads, but it's default functionality for Chrome and can be jarring when sites don't function this way.
