in my opinion the new forums are a good thing for rioters looking for the most popular data. but on the other hand sometimes you want to just watch how the conversation flows so you need to view it as a progression, so i feel you should have the option to change the mode of viewing depending on how you need to view the conversation.

I've been talking to the team about figuring out ways to see how to view the "flow" of conversation. Yes, currently I'd agree that that's where I'm having the most difficulty. The team is aware of this and is trying out solutions which should assist in consuming the conversation along these lines. Not sure what the features are, and not sure how it'll be implemented, but I know things are being discussed.
There is the "recent" option for comment ordering. This establishes all parent comments in chronological order. Any conversations between individual comments will still be visually connected though.
