My "My Updates" icon always shows 1 message unread

When I look here, or on any descendent page, the speech bubble icon up in the top right shows 1 message unread.

When I click on it and go here, it reports "Nothing new here, you’ve already read all of your updates." but still displays that I have 1 message unread.

The bug has been tracked down! We'll be hitting it with item 3134 until it dies.

It means there is a ban notification pending; it sends the notification but it's only in review. Once the review is done you'll receive the ban and the message will actually appear.

I think I know what causes this cause this just started happening to me. I went to my most recent thread and it said 1 new comment. I clicked on "1 new" and it went to a comment that had been deleted.

Could it happen when someone replies to a comment or thread you began and then deletes it before you can read it?
