Personality Types and Playstyle

elduris·7/23/2016, 7:32:29 PM·31 votes·15,701 views

Have you ever picked up a new champion and things just ‘clicked’? Chances are, you found success on the champion because your playstyle matches that of the champion. A Marksman main would probably have a hard time playing Sejuani for the first time, but would have a much easier time with a new champion like Jhin. An aggressive player who enjoys Darius would have a harder time playing a champion like Nasus, comparative to another aggro champion like Zed. Your playstyle affects the types of champions that you like, but what affects your playstyle? If you ask me, it’s your personality.

My playstyle is usually the “careful, calculated engage to win the teamfight”, where most of my early game is setting up vision and preparing for the big decisive teamfight to win the game. And according to the Myers-Briggs personality test, I have an INTJ (Introverted-Intuitive-Thinking-Judging ) personality. Essentially, I’m an introverted thinker that likes to take time to make decisions and ensure that they’re the right ones. This perfectly describes my preferred playstyle, waiting for the right moment to strike the winning blow. The quote below expands on this idea:

INTJs are natural leaders, although they usually choose to remain in the background until they see a real need to take over the lead. They are the supreme strategists - always scanning available ideas and concepts and weighing them against their current strategy, to plan for every conceivable contingency.

I’m not the first to have this idea. Sir ArmaMalum made a great Reddit post connecting Myers-Briggs personality types to favorite champions. While Thresh certainly took a lot of the spotlight, you can notice some big differences between the different personalities.

Even though we’re covering a more broad subject of general playstyle with this thread, I want to see what everyone else thinks! I took my test at this website, feel free to use this test to get your Myers-Briggs personality type and then describe your playstyle or favorite champion/role in the comments below!

Hi. Good to see another INTJ (the 2nd rarest of the 16 types, but there will probably be a lot in this comment section since this kind of idea is basically a magnet for our personality).

I made a similar theory, however instead of personality type, previous favorite games. The Myers Briggs test is good for things like problem solving, it doesn't spell out how they enjoy different styles of play. For instance, while you like setting the terms of the fight, I prefer reacting to it with my main sup Zilean. I control the fight from the back line, stunning/ slowing enemies and saving carries. Personality type and play style can probably be correlated, but I doubt they can be be all that reliable. For instance in the comment section I see that other INTJs play support like me. This could probably be because INTJs don't care nearly as much about being the center of attention (cough adc mains cough), or need to make the flashiest plays, so are able to adapt to the role other types can have trouble with. So I think that the types can be loosely correlated to play style.

I think that there could be a more reliable way of predicting someones playstyle. Every game has some core aesthetic that makes makes it fun, or in this case playstyle. By knowing someones other favorite games, you could pair the aesthetic of the game to a similar playstyle.

For instance lets look at assassins and many junglers. Most of how they contribute to their team is through very high risk high reward scenarios (jumping the carry, counter jungling, ganking, ect.). These are fun because of the massive adrenaline boost you get when you succeed. So players who play games that have adrenaline as a core aesthetic, will find playing jungle or assassins will be more entertaining. Adrenaline games would be racing games, and most FPS games.

For another example, adcs. The biggest influence and adc can do is to master relatively simple mechanics, and use them to their maximum effectiveness. aka csing, kiting, positioning ect. So people coming from games that have mastery of mechanics as one of their aesthetics will have fun playing adcs. Games like this would include fighting games(games in the same genre as street fighter in case the generic genre name is misleading), and some of the less puzzle-y platformers. Also less obviously shared core aesthetic, RTS games like starcraft. Think about how an adc could put to use all the apm they get in those games.

Anyway you probably get the idea.

I think you could probably break it down even further almost to the champion if you got a thorough enough system.

This would be especially good for newer players. They most likely came from other games, so having a test like this would be great for pointing them in the right direction. They would actually need to play all the champions to be sure they aren't missing out on someone even better, but this could be a huge boon for newer players.

Anyways sorry for the long comment, bye.

INTJ all the way.

INTP here :P

And a small disclaimer as well guys, as the author of that refernced reddit post and survey, I do want to point out the survey was taken while Thresh was a pretty dominant support, hence the spikes for him.

I also have a tl;dr of my survey results way back when it was underway here: https://www.reddit.com/r/leagueoflegends/comments/2huckl/survey_personality_types_and_favorite_champion/

(so you don't have to get eye strain from the results)

If anyone would like to use this data for their own purposes as well feel free! Persoanlly I would love to see a cross-examination between a Myers-briggs vs. champions and a different personality test like The Big Five vs. champions, just saying.....

INFP-T, Mediator here. Apparently just 4% of the population or something? I'm a support main, but even when I'm not supporting, I tend to bring champs with good utility (orianna, etc). I like knowing I can help a jungler when they visit lane. My mains: Janna Sona And my green crest/ribbon. :)

TeCoolMage7/24/2016, 6:03:41 AM2 votes

I was part of that when it first came out a year ago

I forgot to mention afterwards: These results aren't very useful unless you do some research on the underlying factors that cause these statistics. Someone should sort the results by the type's ratio to the general results for reddit users. (e.g. INTPs are everywhere in Reddit, I'm betting they make at least a quarter or even half. Here, they only make 1/5 of the results. Also, thresh and lee sin are common mains while only a tiny percent of players would claim to be a teemo main, so the results of the test should be compared with the results of overall league pick rates.)

I can probably get something out if I spent some time messing around with excel.

Also I just noticed how ExxPs except ENFP have a higher Zed playerbase than Thresh, unlike INTP, INTJ, and ESFJ (lol ESFJs hate assassins) >:(

troll personality type - rebels and outlaws who dgaf about the rules. they are brave and fearless in the face of consequences. fall in line and be just like everyone else? that is the path for most, but trolls make their own rules.

I'm a Nasus main because I like helping people . . . . wait

Blue Skies7/24/2016, 1:30:04 AM1 votes

INFP - The Humanists. I main top lane. Favourite champions: Rengar, Vladimir, Wukong.

r4ndomkill7/24/2016, 2:24:29 AM1 votes

Took the test five times and got radically different answers each time, that sums up the champs I play in a nutshell.

Kynami7/24/2016, 3:18:56 AM1 votes

INTP... but my champ selection is a bit jumbled.

Main support, with my other two played roles being jungle and adc. My champion preference is very heavily skewed towards mages. That said my two most played ADCs are Miss Fortune and Jinx while the two champions I play the most for jungle are Diana and Sejuani. As for playing my main role everything from Sona to off-meta picks like Cassiopeia and Galio have been used.

I tend to play heavily aggressive in lane even as Soraka. First blood by banana at level 2 has happened a few times in the last week alone.

Demented Gag7/24/2016, 3:47:15 AM1 votes

Shaco and Rengar are champs who clicked with me instantly. Is that bad?

Aatrox Mid 1v57/24/2016, 4:14:30 AM1 votes

Sorry i was genuinely too lazy to read all of it. if any of you care, i main kennen. I like him because he is great at 1v1s and also brings huge utility in teamfights. and since he has no items to rush(if you dont count zhonyas), you can adapt your build to their comp easily. also the feeling of procing your stun in lane just feels so good. it almost feels as good as landing the perfect lux ult to get a pentukril. almost.

I am an adaptible player, switch playstyles subtly but immediately, catch them off-guard

TheLeviathan7777/24/2016, 5:14:17 AM1 votes

Havent taken the test yet but on my favorite things to do is play Shaco and use mind games and cause as many "wtf" s in all chat as i can and show up at the most random of times to screw someone over.. What does that say about me x.x Edit: Test - INTP , explain that

Spacesuit Spiff7/24/2016, 5:31:54 AM1 votes

Intj as well, quite accurate

Votable Jester7/24/2016, 6:03:19 AM1 votes

Am I the only ISTP here?

Well I guess it makes sense with all the skillshot and cc mages I play (primarily Morgana, Orianna, and Xerath).

I guess my playstyle could be described as patient but opportunistic. I patiently make my way through the laning phase, pushing the lane to make them miss cs and prevent them from roaming. I watch for easy opportunities to harass them out of lane (further expanding my cs lead). Once the laning phase is over, I look for picks as Morgana, brawls as Orianna, and generally siege towers as Xerath. Once an enemy is killed or forced to back, I generally go for dragon with my team if possible, or try to push down a tower otherwise (I go for both if we clearly have enough time, but that isn't too common). I generally continue this strategy into the late game, but with slightly more focus on sieging (Morgana and Orianna shine in teamfights, and Xerath shines in continuous sieging).

So yeah, I'd say my personality influences my playstyle. Though I suppose you could argue that you could fit any personality to any playstyle if you're looking for connections between the two.

Fiora Karma Syndra

Cheekynorth7/24/2016, 11:33:35 AM1 votes

I main Varus. And Fiora. I guess I like exploiting mistakes in positioning and mistakes in general. Varus punish: Flash > Ult > Q > kill Fiora punish: ult, Q, E first hit, W if they fight back, Q again, E second hit, kill

Apparently I got ISTP. Don't know how common or uncommon that is, but apparently I'm a fast learner who can tackle most any problem, but I don't really consider others when thinking and have a tendency to make poorly judged decisions which can be a problem for me in the future. Sure, why not. Could someone please explain a bit farther into this kind of... personality? I'm a skeptic of this kind of thing, if you will.

Catastrop7/24/2016, 12:25:56 PM1 votes

INT-P Lissandra Main, though I also play a lot of Katarina. I think it works out, I basically like looking for attacks of opportunity wherever I see them by looking at the game closely and figuring out how best I can do my job while sustaining minimum damage to the team and myself.

Spaceman5pff7/24/2016, 4:41:07 PM1 votes

Hmm I got ENFP Extraverted: Action oriented, Outgoing, Expressive, Hands-On. Intuitive: Imaginative, Future oriented, Conceptual, Abstract. Feeling: Empathetic, Accepting, Warm, Values harmony. Perceiving: Spontaneous, Flexible, Open minded, Adventurous.

Famous ENFP: Ellen Degeneres, Robin Williams, Walt Disney.

Highly independent They seek out creativity and freedom Energetic and charismatic Cooperative and friendly Able to conceptualize “big-ideas” and theories

It is said that ENFP's may rely very much on their gut feeling, and intuition to make quick descisions. While they would give up themselves to help others (often to a fault) they wouldn't let hurting someone's feelings get in the way if it meant being right. Despite being people-pleasers, ENFP's often have trouble accepting criticism.

This all lines up pretty well with how I naturally approach League of Legends. The two roles that first pulled me in were Support and Jungle, roles that allowed me to put my team before myself. As of now I am primarily a Jungler, and while my highest mastery champions are Elise, Rengar, and Poppy, the champions I gravitate towards over and over again have always been the type that provide CC or other utility. Nautilus is one of the first champions I stuck with. My friend and I would play Nautilus - Twitch Bottom lane (I was the support, obviously) and I would RUSH Mobi boots every game (early season 4) just so I could bust out of the brush and hit a hook as fast as possible.

I am the kind of jungler who will give up farm to set up a gank for you, but if you question how I go about this, I am likely to abandon you and go elsewhere. I might not always say anything about it, but I don't appreciate people questioning how I play the game, especially when nothing bad happened and all I was trying to do is help you.

It really is quite interesting how these things line up.

This is obviously heavily skewed to two points; the Introverted personality types (Especially the supposedly "rare" INTP types), and Yasuo players. Introverts are obviously drawn to Reddit and LoL, while Yasuo's popularity is always stellar to the dismay of his salty haters.

Needless to say, I got INTP-A and my favorites are Yasuo, Jhin (I play him extremely aggressively), Ekko, Diana, Irelia, and Kindred.

Edit: Also just noted that it is also skewed to Thresh players, even more so than Yasuo lol.

Im adc main, first time playing vayne; loved it. With high mobility and damage and attack speed reliant is what i loved abt her u like draven with no mobility and depend solely on ur Q. I guess im in for opportunist and looking for engage and be a damage dealer in the team

ISTP. My most played champs are Nasus MasterYi Katarina.

I like powerful, simple champs that can slaughter the entire enemy team provided they got though the early game well enough.

My playstyle right now is play jungle or support to help my garbage teammates, and play support jungles give my carries kill and lose anyway after being ahead 10 kills because my carries were only ahead because I got them ahead.

Maximus9785/1/2018, 12:49:35 AM1 votes

I usually prefer champions that are tanky, can kite enemies/force enemies away from my teammates, but when necessary can bring the hurt. I used to play as Garen a lot, but switched to warwick since his primal howl turned him into a momentary tank and could save an ally's hide when an enemy was about to kill them. Once they start fleeing, I often chase them until reaching a turret, or killing them with my ult or Q. Maybe that makes me more of an aggressive support type player?

I got INTP-T "The Logician" and my favourite champion to play is Diana (in the mid lane). My other favourite champions are Veigar and Lulu.

I'm not so sure if my personality test results match up with my favourite champions to play though. Any insight?

hh the thinker7/23/2016, 9:44:36 PM1 votes

i'm an INTJ also. i knew about this for a few years though. i main support and tend to be more passive (though i can go aggro with champs i know well at the right times). i enjoy champs that control what's happening with cc mostly which is why i main support. i can also keep track of almost everything at the same time in teamfights, so i know what to do when.

i also enjoy champs with skill shots like blitz and thresh since i can see the way they are thinking and know what they will do before they do it most of the time. gets funny when i aim behind them and they run backwards into the skill shot, they afterwards start to just flash right away when i fire it again.

looking back on it, it's a clusterfuck of playstyles, really, and the graphs Sir A posted show no correlation between my personality type and anivia or shyvana at all, and relatively low for renekton, while being high for two champions i hate so freaking much (gnar and riven, but especially gnar!)
