Hello, I just reported a player for threating to gut me, or kill a family member. And I would like to keep track or know for sure that this player would get banned hopefully riot would ban his IP address.
Deep Terror Nami4 votesAbout everyone saying you'll get a notification, you only get this if your report was the last straw which resulted in the punishment. If he's punished the very next game, you won't get it.
Riot won't otherwise inform you about punishments to other players, so just put this behind you; this kind of behavior is definitely a permaban offense so just leave it to Riot and don't dwell on it.

Riot doesn't give a play-by-play on any reports, in-game or on their web support. Actually they say:
For the sake of privacy, we cannot disclose any disciplinary action that may be taken, but we will investigate.

Cute Poro1 votesRiot takes threats extremely seriously, they will deal with the person no doubt about that. But even if you file a support ticket, they still won't divulge the action taken against that player.
Serevas2 votesRiot doesn't do IP bans at all that I'm aware of. That being said they do take threats very seriously, you'll get notified if he gets punished through a pop up in your client.

Moooose32 votesIt's the internet. Stuff like this sucks, but it happens. And they won't give you information on who is banned, the most that will happen is you'll receive a notification that a player you recently reported has had actions taken against them.
Chønklord1 votesSaying "it's the internet" still doesn't make it ok. Most countries have laws against this sort of thing, for good reason. Being on the "internet" does not invalidate what someone says or does; it simply makes it more anonymous.
Imagine if someone called your phone or drove by your place and yelled out they were going to murder your family. The methods of communication are different, but the threat definitely would need to be taken seriously. The internet is just another form of high speed (instantaneous) communication; closer to being in person than most, but more anonymous than others.
Moooose31 votesI never said it made it ok. I agree it doesn't make it ok, just that people in general are much more likely to be assholes on the internet because of the anonymity of it. They feel as if there is less consequence and a lot of the time don't understand it is another person they are talking to. As for your analogy, I think those are completely different. People say stuff like this to me all the times in league games, I don't take them seriously at all. It is so statistically improbable that somebody who is that mentally sick to kill somebody, also understand how to find IP addresses, and then find an actual address from that, would be the one saying that in a league lobby with 9 other people that it doesn't even register. Somebody in person already probably has this information. And while I agree it is still bad, internet threats on an online videogame like this, with little to no personal information tied to accounts, is seriously nonthreatening. Still bad, agreed, but not the same at all.
