Riot, you guys seriously need to implement a way to track champ select chat. This is getting really stupid. I get shit talked in champ select and felt the need to defend myself because they were just pissing me off and I get suspended because of that? Man this is something.
Defending yourself is fully allowed. Self defense is taking action to prevent harm, which in the case of League means using the mute button.
Retaliation is harming another as they have harmed you, and this is what happens when you start throwing insults and negativity back at someone. Riot doesn't care why you're acting negatively, only that you are, and so acting as poorly as the guy flaming you is grounds for punishment.
Here a tip.... DONT SAY ANYTHING WHEN I MEET SOMEONE TOXIC.. I SAY OK TY AND MUTE THEM.. SIMPLE SHUT YOUR MOUTH AND YOU WONT GET BAN SIMPLE AS THAT DONT BLAME OTHERS FOR UR WORDS
"and felt the need to defend myself".. why? Because some kids talked "shit" in a game? That hurt you so much you needed to defend yourself? You may want to evaluate your life a bit and really determine what is important enough to respond to.
Advice. Make use of either the mute function, or just don't play. Kids with low self-esteem will talk "shit" to fill their shallow lives, nothing you or Riot can do to stop them. What we can do is mute them and enjoy the game without their words.
It's better to mute than anything.
You can still be defensive in chat without retaliating. If this started in pre game, just dodge.

riot records all chats: champ select, in-game, post game, private messages
but they don't usually follow up on the ones not in the actual game unless prompted to via report or ticket
