I just logged into an account with a 14 day ban after about a month and when i logged in, it said i have permanently been banned. I am curious as to how because i havent been on the account in a while to do anything bannable. can riot upgrade bans from 14 day to permanent ban while im currently serving my 14 day ban? just wondering

Erdrik2 votesIn regards to chat related toxicity, the severity of the punishment is not based on severity of offense. It is a 4 strike system, where severity of the punishment is based on how many strikes you have accrued:
1st strike - 10 game chat ban 2nd strike - 25 game chat ban 3rd strike - 14 day full ban 4th strike - perma
The transition to perma is more sensitive because to get there you either have to do something extreme, or you have to consistently prove you are unwilling to reform.
It does seem odd that you were punished while inactive for a full month after your 14 day. Were you doing anything League related at all during that month?

Erdrik1 votesRiot has been known to do randomly selected manual reviews, for the purpose of checking the systems accuracy. I suppose its possible you were unlucky and your account was selected during that time.
Thats just a guess though. I'd suggest submitting a SUPPORT ticket.
Be polite, professional, and specific. Don't claim the ban was unjust or unfair, the ticket isn't the place for that and it insults the work they put into system and their jobs. Remember your trying to find out why you got "perma'd while already banned", don't get sidetracked into anything else.

It's not exactly unheard of, there are cases presented here in the forum where players claimed their chat restriction/ban were unjustified, then a Rioter stepped in and did a manual review of their chatlog. Their punishment increased to permaban from those.
There could be other reasons of course besides manual review, may be your crime didn't caught up to you in time? Maybe your behaviour prior your ban was REALLY awful?

Reports do not lead directly to punishment. They lead to a review of the match for the player being reported. 9 reports are no different than 1 report, it just flags the match for review.
Once your account has a certain number of flagged matches associated with it, the system randomly selects some of those matches for review. Once reviewed, if you did nothing wrong in any of those matches, the reports are thrown out and those players future reports become less valuable.
If you got bans it was because something you did was found during the review, not because anything anyone else did.
