Devil's advocate on chat bans
Let me play devil's advocate for a second: Personally I think the only reason you should be banned is if you cheat or intentionally feed/leave games. I'm not toxic myself but find it stupid how people care what random people online say. Riot should just let people mute them and move on, not ban people for speaking their mind. It's a competitive game with random teams, sometimes people aren't going to agree and when people care about the game and their rank as a whole people are gonna get pissed off when teammates under perform. I don't think banning those who are toxic really changes anything. They will still be type A controlling highly competitive people who get mad when teams do badly, there's nothing you can do about it. And if you say there's a difference between cursing at your teams and telling them to do better well not exactly the only reason curse words are bad is because of the stigma surrounding them from people saying not to use them. People who are toxic will continue to be toxic, maybe even more so because of a banned account (just look at tyler1) and those who aren't toxic won't won't be affected either. I think riot should get rid of banning people for speaking their mind and instead focus on more important stuff like leavers, afkers, intentional feeders, that just ruin the game forever. You can always mute a toxic teammate if you don't want to hear them talk, and people have freedom of speech to say what they want. Regardless people shouldn't care what random people say on a video game. It's the same as on xbox or ps4 you have people talking shit calling eachother %%%gots all the time, they don't get banned because it is an inevitable part of online gaming where you can say what you want, to whomever you want, whenever you want. Banning these people doesn't achieve the goal Riot wants it to and personally I think it just adds a lot of frustration which just feeds into people being more toxic. The only reason they punish this is as a marketing decision to make their game reach a broader audience by becoming a family atmosphere. Which doesn't even make sense because half the people talking shit in the community are 12 year olds in the first place, and they don't need special catering to because they're a huge part of the problem themselves. Regardless of this, xbox and playstation both lack a language filter besides the mute button which honestly is a lot harder to find than on a league client, and they still have millions of kids playing on it every day. The whole summoner's code idea was cute when the game first started and wasn't too popular, but now that millions of people play the game, in a giant age demographic, I think it is outdated and needs to be changed. This along with times and society changing in general with curse words becoming more accepted because of pop culture I think calls for Riot changing this part of their game because what started as a business opportunity to reach a new market has turned into a hindrance on a larger part of the community than it is helping, without really accomplishing anything. I don't think that banning them does anything. I don't understand why for toxic players it goes beyond chat bans honestly. Maybe restrict them to 2 or something idk but I don't think banning them does anything to fix the problem. Plus I think that part of the reason people don't care anymore is because they think that the other person is going to be banned, and they're pissed somebody talks shit and talk shit back because they think theyre right and the other person will be banned. If banning wasn't an option I'd be curious to see if people having petty arguments in chat would go up or down. Personally I think without the incentive of the other person being banned they'll fall at least like 20%. Again this is just my opinion please feel free to comment if you disagree.
