Why Do People Lie Though

So, perhaps you've had this happen in your games. An opposing player tells you in all chat that someone on their team told them "kill yourself" or "your mom's a slut" or some such. See, I just had such a player in my game, wont name and shame or anything, but I have a question: why?

See, this player was recently on my team. And they were lying. The player they were saying this stuff about didn't type a single word all game. So why do people do this. Are there any reformed players who used to do this that can explain the thought process maybe? Because the chat logs are gonna show if someone said those things or not, lying wont get you very far.

Mostly just curious.

I think these people are vastly misinformed, and/or they just can't think things through. Usually when they do this it's because they think that having others report will "help" get the player punished - even if it's not true. They think that by being reported a lot, these players will be punished even if they didn't do anything wrong.

A simple logical thought process would tell anyone who thinks this that it isn't feasible to do such a thing - but for some reason people still don't get this. Not sure if it's the age group, or just frustration "heat of the moment" type things.

Lots of people try to fake the reports and it actually does nothing. All you have to do is report the liar for trying to bait fake reports and move on. There is a constant misconception that people think numbers of fake reports actually does something. People have kept spreading the idea that mass reports does something.

All it does is create a more toxic environment because the person has just made a hostile comment and planted seeds of discord and ultimately if they keep doing anti-social things like that, it will piss their teammate or teammates off enough to just stop wanting to help them.

To slander them and/or try to get them reported and punished

I think theyre just trying to bring them down to their own miserable state of mind. Misery loves company.

Short Answer: They're trolling. Long Answer: They're trolling your team, their team, or both teams. TL;DR: They're trolling.

I think this just goes down to the basics of why people lie in general. To obtain something they would otherwise not by telling the truth.

As rujitra said, they're misinformed about how the reporting system works. You can get reported for "verbal abuse" in every single game you play by all 9 other players. If you were not verbally abusive, you are not going to get punished.

Why do people lie? I don't think any of us are qualified to answer that in any way other than, "because they're assholes."
