Why people are so quick to assume you are flaming them?

Today I had a game, where we were 4v4 fighting in the midlane (both top laners were in their lanes). Except, it was a 3v4 becuase our jungler, Jax, decided to go and farm his blue buff while we were getting engaged on by Leona. We obviously lost the fight, them having Yasuo, Leona, Kayn and Sivir, and us having Soraka, Fizz and Ezreal. I was a little tilted at this point, and I typed at him, "Jax why are you farming blue while we are fighting?" That's all i typed, nothing toxic or passive-aggressive.

Then the jax seems to completely rage. Calling me trash, calling my duo trash, and telling us it was so obvious we shouldn't be fighting if he was at blue. (He only went to go farm AFTER we got engaged on, btw.)

I tried to explain this to him but it seemed like nothing i said got through to him, so i quit trying and focused on my own game. Then he would type on all chat from time to time, "Report soraka for flaming", and "lmao this 0/3 soraka is flaming me" (I was 0/3/6 at the time, go figure.)

The thing is i didnt flame him at all, i simply asked him why he left us to go do his blue buff while we were fighting them. no flame at all. boards probably wont believe me but oh well.

Anyway, i muted him immediately because his constant ? pings and asking the enemy team to report me in all chat every 5 seconds was distracting me and getting very irritating. So I fully mute him, get on with the game, our top laner popped off and we ended up winning nicely.

And what do I see as the firfst message in post game chat?

"Report soraka for flame".

I really do not understand, why is everyone so quick to assume that you are flaming them now? Im very scared that i will be baned because an increasing number of people are declaring they will report me, usually for "inting" when i'm 0/5/30, I know false reports dont count but with the amount of spaghetti in the system its making me pretty worried haha.

Because not everyone is good at processing comments and criticism well during the heat of a game, even if the comments are delivered respectfully and objectively. The way he "heard" what you said in his own head was absolutely different than how you "heard" it when you wrote it. You may not have been passive-aggressive, but that's how he heard it.

It probably wasn't his first game either. I've been privy to respond to people like Jax at times and I can tell you it's usually because someone in the previous game flamed me for doing something. This is especially the case if the person is on a losing streak where they have been flamed either by their team or the enemy team every single game. I would have to guess it was probably that Jax was on a losing streak and was so paranoid that at the first sign of flaming he essentially threw his hands up in the air and tried to protect himself by counter flaming you. If it's really bad, typically there is nothing you can do to change the person's mind, as you witnessed. It's equivalent to the person just exploding in anger and throwing a tantrum because they are fed up with being flamed.

I guess if you're worried about it pings tend to work much more effectively than chat, and of course I don't mean the "missing" ping. Spam the assist ping on your location and usually that will help get the attention onto the area that needs focus. If not, there is really nothing else you can do: they're either so tilted from previous games that they don't care anymore or just unexperienced.

I hope that helps and hope you do not get reported!

People are Oversensitive :) Spoilt.

Because of the frequency of flamers and the lack of tone and/or facial expressions when it comes to chat.

"Jax why are you farming blue while we are fighting?"

Try to read that with an annoyed/angry tone in mind and you will easily see how it can be interpreted as passive aggressive. And if people encounter more passive aggressive people than neutral (or at least believe so because of negativity bias) they may end up reading it in exactly that tone.

Flaming is basically anything negative being flung at you that is without any non-contextual intent to make you play better. If you make remarks about someone playing bad but not even remotely providing them info on what (not) to do, then you're flaming somebody.

In society today most Mommies and Daddies tell their children they are special and give them everything they want and when said children start integrating with the real world and find out that Mommy and Daddy lied to them they get butthurt instantly. It's a learned behavior from their childhood and most will probably fail real life because of it.

Because they know it's a Riot hot-word, so people are always going out of their ways to find reasons to report.

Actual trolls aren't actually that common. However, people come into the game hearing about how toxic it is and how many trolls are in the game. The loudest players talk about it.

So people enter games expecting to see trolling. Because of that, when a someone makes a mistake, those people see trolling and start flaming because they think their target is intentionally screwing over the team.

Insecurity, of course. The key feature of any alpha video game playing internet dweller.
