Proposals for perma banned players

Hello there boards! I hope you're having a wonderful morning or evening.

Permanent suspensions are a frequent topic within the LoL community. After receiving three warnings, you still failed to stop being toxic and flaming (or inting) excessively and were banned.

Now, just last night, my friend received that ominious pop-up on his client: Your account has been penalized for unsportsmanlike conduct. Please relog to see your ban duration and reform card. We were voice-cjatting on Discord, and he was praying: please let it be a 14-day ban, please.

And alas, it was a permanent ban. He was completely DEVASTATED. His account had been level 205 with over sixty skins. He was so, so, so upset, and while he did flame, it still felt heartbreaking.

I asked him what he'd do if Riot gave him a second chance. He responded, "I didn't think I'd actually get permabanned. I'd never talk again."

That's just my story. I'm sure most of you have a story about getting permabanned. Now, onto my proposals.

i think we should give permabanned players a chance to appeal their punishment and get to use their account again. HOWEVER, In order to apply, you must have a level 30 account with an honor level of 3+, which has never received a punishment for toxic behaviour (similar to the requirements to make a PBE account). This would prove that the permabanned player has reformed.

Now, after they get their account back, give them a very, very long chat restriction. Make them have a maximum for two message at a time, and the ban lasts 100-200 games, maybe even the rest of the season. Perhaps ban them from ranked queues for the duration of their chat ban, since in my experience ranked appears to blossom toxic behavior.

That's my proposal to give perma-banned players a second chance. Of course, at even the slightest gesture of toxicity, ban them again and make them ineligible to appeal again.

Now, I have a suggestion to help players realize that they are being toxic.

Most players say things they do not mean in the heat of a game, and regret it heavily afterwards. I know I have.

However, there's something we can do to help with this!

In the old client, there was something of a notifaction, that told you that you had been recently reported for verbal abuse, and that you should watch what you say in game. We should bring this back (and actually make it work, unlike the gifting pop-up).

I also know that your Honor progress will get slowed if you're being toxic, but not toxic enough to warrant a punishment - but without a notifcation. I think you should get a popup-, similar to a reform card, saying something alongs of the lines: "Greetings Summonor. You have recently exhibited unsportsmanlike behavior on the battlefield, and your Honor progress has been slowed. We know League can get heated at times, but please keep things respectful on the Fields of Justice!"

I'm not an expert by any means, but I really think that these changes could help. Please share your opinions! I'd love to hear them.

Have an amazing rest of your day or night. :)

If 3 prior warnings/suspensions aren't a warning enough that someone is being toxic, I honest to god don't know what else will be.

if permabanned people got their account back Permaban wouldn't be a big punishemnt anymore

Your friend should've thought about that before flaming. Knowing full well that after a 14 day ban you're on very thin ice and the next offence will lead to a permanent ban

Your friend had multiple chances to reform after the punishments but he didn't

3 god damn warnings to an eventual perma ban, if that is not obvious enough that you had multiple chances to be the better person in game, then i don't even know what's so difficult to comprehend about this bullshit.

Once perma banned, always perma banned. No amount of account level, money spent, skins owned, etc will change that.

Here's my suggestion: Tell your friend to make a new account, and to reform himself and let his perma ban be a daily reminder of his fuck up forever.

Nah, rulebreaking needs to have consequences and punishments are supposed to feel bad and gross.

Your buddy had chances to feel remorseful and improve his behavior, but he squandered them. It's unlikely that yet another chance would change that, and I see nothing good about encouraging extremely toxic permabanned players from creating new accounts and polluting the experience for actual new players.

It's worth noting that Riot's statistics suggest rather the opposite of what you're suggesting, which is part of the reason they don't use your method.

What they realized is that most people reform after one punishment, regardless of what that punishment is. Regardless of whether or not it takes all four steps or you get an escalated ban, the recidivism rate for people who get to permaban is in the ballpark of 90%.

They actually had a system similar to what you suggested back in the day, it had some obscene failure rate of like 95% though so they scrapped it. There is an experiment possibly still going on again where they are trying another appeal, the jury is still out on whether it works or not, but the fact that Riot hasn't said anything about it in a while probably means it ain't doing too hot.

Side note, the various punishments beforehand WERE your second and third chances, a permaban is the last strike saying "Ok, you clearly aren't going to do anything besides make this whole thing shit for everyone, so just leave then."

While it is unfortunate, players are given multiple chances to improve their behavior before they get permabanned. If they can't be bothered to be behave in a mature and respectful manner then why should they be allowed to continue playing? The line has to be drawn somewhere.

To quote Umbral Regent:

If you got your main account permanently banned, the only way you can prove your reform is to not get any further accounts banned.

Riot isn't going to give you infinite chances, they have to put their foot down somewhere - and that somewhere happens to be after the 14-day ban. If you can't be bothered to listen to three separate warnings at the very least, then, why should your main account be given a fourth try? You've already proven three separate times that you don't care about the rules.

My opinion is that if you're worth getting your account back, you wouldn't have gotten it banned in the first place.

That's a definite NO for most people here. I've never even gotten a chat restriction, nor anyone I know.

Sometimes it takes a great loss for people to change. They can only move forward after that point. Can't keep crying over spilt milk forever.

Sounds to me like your friend got banned from toxicity in chat, which takes multiple steps to result in a permaban, the fact that he said "if i knew it was a perma ban i'd never talk again" means he got through multiple warnings and kept being toxic. Ban well deserved if you ask me.

If the permabanned get another chance, people will know about this and will stop taking permaban as seriously. Absolutely r%%%%%ed suggestion.

i think we should give permabanned players a chance to appeal their punishment

That's called chat restriction & 14 days suspension. Nothing else.
