Does reporting people for racism and racial slurs actually do anything?

I reported a person for spamming racial slurs in our team chat... but after the game upon looking at his page, he has close to 1000 games played.

It is unlikely that a person will go 800+ games without being racist then decide to spam chat all of a sudden... so, either nothing is being done when he/she is reported, or no one reports him because no one seems to mind.

Both of those possibilities make me sad and uncomfortable... because I just want to play a video game in peace. If I wanted to deal with racism I would just walk outside.

It is especially discouraging to think that it is in fact being reported and it is riot that doesn't care. Amumu Just wondering if anyone has any experience with this, because this isn't the first time I've seen people abuse others in chat with the brazen attitude that nothing will be done even if they are reported. So I am wondering if there is any truth to that.

It happens more then most want to admit.

No matter what anyone else tells you on this thread. YES Riot is doing something about it. We'll never get all toxicness out of games but they are trying and it will make a difference.

Just pointing out something else though, I think there may be more mean/nasty comments in game right now because of the harsher punishments being handed out, people not receiving rewards, and that it is pre-season.

Yes it does report them, and I understand with all the amount of troll/toxic games I have been in over the years its insane.

Using racism will just get them flagged by the automated system faster and punished faster because they say the racist words.

Honestly I want just want Racist players in LoL who just blurt out racism without thinking about the meaning behind the word to get banned eventually no matter how long it takes.

I totally agree. The thing is people make homophobic remarks, make fun of someone's weight or age or perhaps them having a serious mental illness.

Riot is doing what they can. We, as the player base need to look at what WE can do. If someone we que with on our friends list makes these remarks what do we do?

Do you let it slide or do you decide to be part of the solution and tell them they're wrong? If they continue do we tell them that this behavior is unacceptable and let them know we do not wish to be associated with them? Or just type "lol" and forget it"?

My nature to real life and in online games is to be forgiving. I give them chanches but only 1 to reconsider what they say and apologize. While it doesn't work like 100% of the time and won't stop them in the future it makes them consider what they are saying and might make them much more reluctant to say in the future. If they decide to continue that behavior I mute them and report them at the end. I don't say "Let's all nerf this guy!" Or tell everyone in all chat to report him. Instead I let everyone else decide whether they want to report the player or not. If you report him then nice let's hope that's one less toxic player in LoL! If you don't report him then in my mind you are almost just as bad as the guy towing racial slurs. Why? Because you are letting the behavior go on which is not contributing to the solution but only making the problem worse or let it remain to be what its. Saying racist remarks or sexist or whatever should be punished. Even in jest. If it's between 2 friends and both are okay with that alright then I'm fine with it too but till I get consent from both I'll assume you are being racist and report. I really don't care whether I seem like a SJW or a White Knight. Racism is still existing in this day and age and espcially with recent events will only grow stronger unless we stop it.

I doubt Riot could implement this, but it would be nice if you got some kind of a notification that a player that you reported has been banned. Might help you feel like something is being done about it as opposed to just reporting that player and then not knowing if it had any impact at all

It has to be your report itself that causes it. If you report someone, and a week later they're banned, you won't be alerted.

Either that or not a single person I've reported has been banned.

Well theres a couple reasons for suicide due to bullying... First, it's real life. Let's start off with that. Second, bullying is half physical damage. They actually hit you. Third, the bully telling you that you're a -insert racial slur here- doesn't make you sad. Constant harassment leads to depression. And it's usually a bunch of people at a time

You said words can't hurt anyone but physical illness is not the only type of pain. People suffer from mental illnesses too. What you said makes no sense. Thats why there is an option to report somebody for verbal abuse also homophobic/racial slurs. Since you are into hypothetical situations let me lay one down for you.

If a person watches another person murder somebody is the person who saw it happen at fault for not calling the police? Yes they are. It's called being a bystander.

If a person is being racist and the other person lets them know that it is accepted by "shrugging it off," is that okay? No it isn't, because you are teaching the racist person that it is socially acceptable to call somebody the N word or discriminate.

Everyone becomes a tough guy over the internet. ITS HILARIOUS. Im reporting my whole team every game if that tells you how bad the players are becoming in this game. RIOT has no clue how to get this under control or fix the problem. Its very sad.

They ban people all the time.

6day ban isn't even something they use.

Punishments have a clear escalation path of 10 game chat restriction, 25 game chat restriction, 14 day ban, permanent ban. Severe infractions can send skip you over punishment tiers but even if you were committing the most minor thing considered punishable, if you got punished for it 4 times you would be perama banned.

reporting does work (got a message myself a few days ago that my reports did indeed get attention and something would be done about the offender) I think the reports just need to build up within a short time frame (it might be a few days for all I know) before the radar resets.

I've encountered a ton of racist people in my games, doesn't seem like anything is ever done about it.

If it looks like someone is "getting away" with that kind of behavior, there are a few possibliities:

  1. The don't behave that way very often, and haven't triggered the punishment system.

  2. They have triggered the system, but had only been on chat restrictions previously.

  3. They've mostly played with friends who don't report them

  4. The people they've played with have the "Reports don't matter" attitude and no one has reported them.

This amount of Racism and toxicity in this game is a lot, Riot just has a tolerance for it. As long as there is a tolerance for despicable behavior, the behavior will continue
