What are the downsides of a permanently enabled chat filter?

Well, one problem is that enabling it doesn't stop toxicity -- "please go boil your head, you ignorant pile of tripe" would get past, for example. The other problem is that some people are totally okay with cursing, and it's fine to let them. "That was a fucking amazing play. Good job!" is 100% fine, and there's no reason to force everyone to censor that.

What are the benefits? Normally the filter blocks cussing. Which means people can still harass other ways.

Maybe the fact that chat filters (which, just to make sure, are not in any way linked to the punishment system) are notoriously unreliable and thus often manage to censor hilariously innocent things. Best case it amuses, worst case it makes people think something actually toxic has been said.

you can still use other things to bypass it. example:

nigg.er fa.ggot

I'm like 90% sure it doesn't even censor words when there's a period at the end. People would just get around it.
