So I recently got a chat restriction for bantering with the enemy team in all chat, but I'm super confused. I thought competitive banter was allowed in League? The worst this I did was say "idiot" which is nothing compared to the comments the enemy made about me being "gay" and "a virgin". So I really don't understand what Riot's policy is on competitive banter.

That said, in my experience, a lot (and I do mean a disconcertingly large number) of people don't actually know what banter is, and assume it means insulting and harassing whoever you're "bantering" with. That may be the case with exceptionally close friendgroups/siblings, but in the context of dealing with random people in a game like League, that doesn't fly.

don't make promises you can't keep. riot has shown several times that they do not and will not punish players who very clearly deserve it. the "instant feedback system" is anything but. you report a player and you never (not instant) get a notification saying someone you reported was punished (not feedback) and thus has shown the system is flawed (not system).

People don't like it when you criticize the system apparently. Crazy how all the comments criticizing Riot and the way the forums work are spam downvoted.
I actually know for a fact this guy didn't get punished because he added me in client after to comment on the punishment, knowing he got me in trouble for something so dumb and he got away scot free.

I just want to talk about what is allowed vs not allowed and why. I know from looking at the forums that when people post chat logs that it just centres around those. I want it to be about what is allowed in general because it is so confusing,

Unless he already knows what he did wrong, in which case I don't understand why he'd post a thread about it. Context doesn't matter. If you feel offended by something another player said, you just mute and report... It's that easy.

Apparently even saying "ggez" is bannable and I see it almost every game. Kind of sucks that I can't call someone who is saying legitimately dumb things (ur a virgin) an idiot without it being punished.

OP, did you report the other guy at all? I think that he reported you and that's why you got a punishment. Or atleast someone did!

Yeah he probably reported me and a bot found the word idiot in the log and went "YUP HE'S TOXIC". I think I reported him but my client (not to mention Riot) has so many problems that I don't know if it even got checked out. Sent in a ticket. Guy even added me after game and went "ENJOY THE RESTRICTION." He was very clearly trying to get me in trouble. It's just crazy that it worked over the word idiot. Guess calling someone a dumb dumb is punishable too because it means the same thing.

Sad thing is they clearly weren't offended and were just trying to get me in trouble in the dumbest way possible. They added me after to mock me (send that with the report in my ticket so I'm hoping Riot will do something...). Sucks that Riot claims that you can banter/bs but even saying something as small as "idiot" or "dumb" to someone being dumb gets punished. Makes me just not want to use chat period. Been playing this game for like 6 years now and I see the words idiot and dumb all the time. Just seems like the definition of what is allowed isn't clear to players at all.

But insulting gameplay is also insulting someone. Insulting rank is also insulting someone. Pretty much any banter or bsing has some kind of underlying insult, direct or not. I've seen things like this so often that it is actually so confusing as to what is allowed and not allowed.

Yeah you gotta learn the social cues I guess. Their rules can be pretty hard for people who lack social awareness, to grasp. Sorry, you'll just have to work around that.
