How long does a chat restriction last, and how do you get chat restricted in the first place?

So, I've talked some crap in my day but I've never started anything, and I've certainly never said things like "ni**er" to anyone else even though it's been said to me a billion times in-game, it seems. Anyway, I just got my first chat restriction. I really don't think it's justified, I never really say anything offensive or rip on my teammates at all. Ironically, this happened right after a game where I had some guy calling me all sorts of names. I just afk'd in return (serves him right for being so offensive).

So, how long does chat restriction last? And what is the criteria for a chat restriction in the first place? Is it some sort of automated thing? Because I've gotten the pop-up often where it says I've said something offensive after a game, but I haven't.

Typical questions in this forum, I'm sure. Sorry for my retardation.

There's a bit to go through, but I think I can lay out the basics;

Those notifications that you were toxic? Those pop up when you've been reported too much more than the average. It doesn't mean the reports were valid, just that they were made. They will be checked for accuracy later, and thrown out if nothing is found.
When you do get a chat restriction, it will last for 10 games the first time and 25 for the second time. You just play any matchmade game to work them off one at a time. The third punishment is a 14 day ban and the fourth is a permaban; please stop any poor behavior before that.
Don't afk and don't retaliate. You're hurting yourself and the other players, so it never helps and it's never justified. The instigator can be the worst racist in the world, but if you get toxic then you are subject to punishment as well. Just mute and report them.

To go off of what Deep Terror Nami said, you can be a jerk without actually having to use curse words. For example, being passive-aggressive is one way to get a chat restriction. If you post your reform card the regulars here in PBM can help you better understand why you got chat restricted in the first place (just check your game client, email and/or spam folder for it, or file a Support Ticket to Riot if you can't find it).

Oh that's cool, I didn't even know I was going to get one of those. I did find the reform card. No, I don't need to post it, it's pretty obvious why I was chat restricted. Heh.

But ya know, I don't think the system is harsh enough, or the feedback/punishment swift enough, for some of the things that are said in League chat. If it was, I wouldn't deal with game after game after game after game after game after game after game after game after game after game after game after game after game after game of ultra-toxic people saying the worst things imaginable and making me feel like I've got to be doling out the punishment, on the spot, by forcing that toxic player to lose the game by feeding his lane or being afk. If I was a clerk at a store, and someone came in saying these things to one of my other customers, I wouldn't tell him you can't talk much for your next 10 or 25 visits, or that he can't come back for 2 weeks, I would remove him immediately from my establishment and never let him in the door ever again.

I really think there should be a big, specific list, of things that can't be said/done in League or it's an instant perma-ban. That would make the environment so much better. How it's possible that the person who called me a "trash ni**er dog" (and that's more meaningful coming from an asian player that it was, where "dog" is far more disrespectful than in America) is even still playing the game blows my mind.

I understand your concerns, I really do. However, Riot's goal is to try to get players to reform and realize that the way that they were behaving was wrong, and that there are better ways to interact with others without being a jerk in the process as well. Of course no system is or ever will be perfect, and there will always be those select few people who think being a jerk is perfectly acceptable regardless of the rules against it.

As for your other point, Riot will never post a list of what can and can't be said because the trolls will just use that information to skirt the line between punishable and not punishable while still acting up as well.

From the Tribunal FAQ:

Why doesn't Riot post a list of rules for what you can be banned for? We believe in giving the community what it needs to define itself and that includes what is acceptable or unacceptable behavior. Any rules provided by Riot Games could unnecessarily influence the community.

Riot is never going to tell you because people will use that information to skirt the edge of impropriety. Heres a simple list of things that will almost always get you punished:

Criticizing anyones skill.
Any racist, homophobic, sexist or ethnic slur.
Spamming. (A good rule of thumb is never say anything more than twice.)
Asking for reports.
Threatening, blackmailing or bullying your team in any way. This specifically includes any reference to going AFK, feeding or aiding the enemy.
Anything that could be construed as you not doing your best (Im not helping bot any more!, for example).
Whining, especially if its about your team not surrendering.

Basically, you should avoid anything you would not say at the funeral of a loved one or during the interview for your dream job.

From Understanding the Tribunal:

4) That player in my game was far worse than me. Why am I banned??? a) I'll keep this one simple: retaliation isn't OK. Reacting to a toxic player by being toxic just incites that player to be even worse--it also ruins the game for up to 8 other players. It is far, far worse to watch two people yelling at each other all game than it is to watch 1 player ranting into blank space. Almost everyone in the game can find someone out there that behaves worse than they do--but so what? Finding someone worse doesn't justify your behavior or justify retaliation. We expect more out of our players. What players often don't realize is... those other players in your game that you thought were worse? Nearly 100% of the time, those players were banned even before you were. If someone is being toxic, just report them and move on. If you retaliate, both of you will be banned. It's really that simple.

Imagine if you have previously told them to not feed or play safe and they dont listen, then you are toxic, then you get banned or restricted or whatever

chat ban is a joke, i was punished because i didnt gank enough as a jg and team thought that i should be reported for trolling and they did. All i said was i cant gank every lane when you die every min; where top was 0-3, and bot was 0-5 in 6 mins in game. i was flamed the entire game and plus they got me banned, lmao! i created a ticket to league, they suggested me to mute, but then why was i even banned for typing? i didnt type shit or insulted them, they were the ones who were insulting and "I WAS PUNISHED"

nah just shit on people you're probably much better than everyone around you so tell them to buy warmogs no matter the champion and be a meat sack and 1v5 people are so bad at the game its impossible to carry with low mmr cause you get put in the int and leave section of the game
