PSA: Calling Someone "Autistic" Isn't Cool, It's Just Offensive And Dumb

Unicky··188 votes·11,824 views

I have Asperger's Syndrome, a neurological disorder on the higher functioning end of the Autism Spectrum. I come home after a long stressful day at high school or work and play some League of Legends just like all of you do. During my solo or even trio/duo queue escapades I run into the uninformed, the unintelligent or the downright evil. I may not be able to help unintelligent or the evil, but I may be able to inform the uninformed.

Firstly, "autistic" is not synonymous with "stupid" or "retarded"(not to be offense of course) That's a generalization and a terribly off one at that. Some autist are actually quite intelligent and talented. Albert Einstein--yes the guy who is like the epitome, the embodiment of high intelligence--is believed to be autistic. While I seem to be implying that "Autistic people are all smart" or some shit, that's not what I mean. I'm simply using the most extreme example to prove my point.

Lastly, there's little to no real reason to use the proper use of this word in the context of this game. Don't be one of those "defend my right to hate speech" type of guys who say some stupid shit like "connotation is a non-factor in online conversation" because that's just not true, or rather it would be true if we were emotionless purely logical robots. We're humans, so that means we have emotions. When we register a word in our minds we create the connotation based off of previous experiences, we then combine that with the denotation of the actual word and the situation in which it's used in. This gives the text a voice, not the one that the person may actually have but the one we've created. This is why you can read a book and feel actual feelings from it. Obviously, when someone uses it in a VIDEO GAME while they are beating someone or losing they definitely aren't giving a proper diagnosis they are using it condescendingly or pejoratively. They are using a real neurological disability as an insult or to seem superior. Don't even get me started on the logical flaws how downright offensive it is because I will dig into it. (edit: Grammarical error)

The point is: don't throw around "autistic" pejoratively, it's not cool, it actually makes you look like an insensitive dumbass and it can--and most likely will--get your account suspended. I love League and the community surrounding it, despite all of the toxic people and despite all of the negativity. As cheesy as this sounds, I proudly consider myself a member of this community and I am proud to contribute my skills and knowledge into making this community a better place. And no, I will not press the mute button y'wanna know why? Because I shouldn't have to. The mute button would have no reason for existing if there weren't assholes enforcing it's use. Anyways I'm done, I'll just post this and get on with my solo queue. (Edit: I don't need nor want any sympathy/empathy, you can hate my guts for all I care. Also, I have zero idea why anyone is mentioning research or any sort of meaning of exactly what autism is. The only facts (key word) I've implied or directly stated are are that:

  1. "Autistic doesn't mean stupid" (for those who literally don't know the difference at all) which is extremely vague for a reason, I'm not explicitly stating what it is because autistic is a broad and vague in and of itself (because there are many types of autism).
  2. Autism is a neurological disorder (I implied again during the introduction and is only technically incorrect if you want to be extremely specific it's a "Neurodevelopental disorder" or some even call it a "Neurobiological disorder") 3)Asperger's is a part of the Autism Spectrum and is higher functioning (http://aspennj.org/what-is-asperger-syndrome want proof? Check the About section if you feel like it's not a credible source). I'd hate to be that guy but think before you comment lol.)

Pretty sure that was their point.

freedom of speech != freedom from consequences

like I have the freedom to threaten to bomb the white house but they can totally arrest me for it

Leetri3 votes

Freedom of speech only protects you from being censored or retaliated by the government because of your opinions and ideas anyway. Riot is not affiliated with the government, and thus that doesn't apply to them. If Riot wanted to make the word "gummy bear" illegal and bannable in their game, they have all the rights to do it. It's even stated in the ToS that Riot reserves the right to ban you or strip you of all content for any or no reason at all without giving an explanation.

Calling anyone anything demeaning isn't acceptable.

macromite6 votes

psa, telling people not to call others autistic and succeeding just means they are going to use a different word to try and be offensive. its intent, not word choice.

Battlecast Sona5 votes

so we should keep using the n word because people will just find other offensive words

stellar argument bro

macromite3 votes

Words are blameless, yet it is they that we decree can't be used. this does nothing to stop the ideals of those that would use them with ill intent, but rather it makes them use and by extension ruin other words.

If a dandelion is growing in your yard, and you wish to remove it, do you take off only the flower?

This thread, I believe, is supposed to address only the use of 'autistic'. It's not trying to fight the use of all offensive vocabulary.

macromite1 votes

think, what would replace it. would you like it to go from autism to asperger's? or from autism to down's? it is a thing that goes nowhere good.

President Swa1n4 votes

How about to nothing new?

Jorencice1 votes

How would you insult someone then?

And you can't tell me that people dont deserve to be insulted.

Because their is some extremely horrible sub human filth that exists.

macromite8 votes

I personally that people do not deserve insulting, only actions do. there is little to insult about a man before you know what he has done, and littler still the things that deserve insults after then.

Aír4 votes

Well said.

macromite3 votes

Thank you.

President Swa1n5 votes

Firstly, I disagree with your perspective to an insurmountable extent.

Secondly, note how I said 'no NEW insults'. I realize many people want to insult others and some people do it as jokes or whatever. The least we can do is to try and avoid insults that would indirectly offend a large group of others (like autists) inadvertently. So if you would really want to insult someone (which I still do not advocate), use words like 'stupid'.

(I cringed as I wrote that. I am not supporting the use of any insult but rather fighting against the use of improper ones.)

Jorencice1 votes

And why do you disagree with insults?

The human language is simply a means to express feelings.

If I hate you or what you stand for the use of an insult is a quick and widely known way of making my feelings known towards YOU.

Notice I capped locks YOU.

Because I've never understood the whole "call a pencil gay and you somehow destroy the entire LGBT community and want to kill all homos" because by the use of the words slang meaning (Newsflash words in the English language can have multiple real and slang meanings) all I did was call a pencil stupid.

If I insult YOU I'm not insulting the entire community of things accociated with that community.

The problem today is everyone is so PC it's actually getting to the point that doctors want us to go more lenient on PEDOPHILES AND ALLOW IT TO SIMPLY BE A SEXUAL ORIENTATION.

Yes you heard me. The world is so worried about "hurting people's feelings" that haveing sex with children might one day be seen as okay.

PC for the sake of PC is bullshit.

President Swa1n3 votes

Insults are generally more than 'I dislike you'.

They are usually something much more profane and are not usually objectively true.

Saying 'I hate you' would be offensive only towards people that would be disappointed by the proclamation (i.e. someone who loves you).

The second type of insult hurts people more because we CARE about being called this or that. We don't want to be known as this or that.

About the use of 'autism' as an insult, it is not that you insult autistic people for being autistic, but rather calling someone you obviously dislike autistic. This gives the impression that you associate that which you do not approve of with autism, meaning you don't like autists. This is a general insult to the whole community.

dapositiveviking3 votes

there's tons of ways to insult people without tying their ineptness to a large group of bystanders. but why insult in general?

Gorgannan2 votes

"It's not trying to fight the use of all offensive vocabulary."

Well then this statement is false.

Dan Abnormal3 votes

theres already plenty to choose from without autism in the pool

macromite3 votes

good use of paradox, I think.

President Swa1n1 votes

This is not a paradox. I believe you mean contradiction, but even then it isn't.

macromite2 votes

"this statement is false" is a commonly known liar paradox.

I think it is a well used paradox as it clearly defines his point, as well as being able to create a discussion which he may have wanted from even a misinterpretation, while also allowing those that understand the reference to chuckle.

President Swa1n2 votes

Ah, I believe I didn't notice that alternative interpretation. :D

macromite2 votes

unfortunately, it will not go back. we have already seen that it doesn't go back, how many people still use exclusively special or retarded as an insult. It will keep going forward, with whatever applies to the hampered populace.

President Swa1n1 votes

If I understand your comment correctly, I believe you are saying that no matter how much we try to fight it, the use of 'autism' as an insult will not diminish. While you may be correct, I am still willing to fight to, maybe, reduce this improper usage to some extent.

macromite2 votes

it can diminish, but only after autism is not a way to define what it defines currently. whatever we use as a society to define people with mental disabilities, or alteast the most popularly known of those, will always be used as an insult so long as we as a species continue to insult.

If you want to fight, that is great, but you need to know the battle first. the battle is not against anyone, it is with all of us, to fight our conceptions and assumptions that dehumanize each other. once we can succeed at that, then we will be golden.

President Swa1n2 votes

If the fight is with, indeed, the concept of using mental disabilities as insults (which seems likely), then I will try to fight that. A better case can be made for a more general topic anyways.

macromite2 votes

Eh, Close enough.

Being called autistic is not an insult that i can just shrug off. If someone called me noob, moron, or even fa**ot. I would pay no mind. Autism can be a beautiful thing and really impact the lives of many people using in a derogatory manor is particularly infuriating because it's something that can be viewed in a positive light and it's basically saying everyone you know with autism is less than human and thats how i want you to feel. My best friend has autism and being told he's less than human really triggers me and many others. Removing calling someone autistic from the vocabulary of insults will help take the next step to removing the stigma that those with autism are less capable and i would like to see that stigma removed in my lifetime. Good enough explanation for you?

dapositiveviking5 votes

hey just curiosity, why is f*ggot an okay insult to you? is it because you have no relation to its connotation?

GRVet3ran0sS3 votes

I am not trying to defend the toxic players but autistic is someone that doesn't understand in which situation he is,he doesn't listen or speak and this kind of behavior is seen by some league players. I have never called anyone autistic, retard or anything like that.

Photos of Ghosts30 votes

You have no idea what autism is. Well, you're less far off than those who think it's just a synonym for stupid, but still, completely off.

GRVet3ran0sS2 votes

You obviously need to take some research before talking.

HayRoss23 votes

Hi, I'm autistic. I'm speaking to you right now. I can comprehend my surroundings. It's 6:19 in the morning, the sky is overcast, I can see a few bushes and small trees between me and the neighbor's house by looking out the window. I am fully capable of understanding the world around me. But that's not possible for an autistic person right? I must just be some liar

actually according to autism speaks only about 1/3 of people on the spectrum are nonverbal, and that is verbal not nontyping.

autism is a spectrum disorder, op was describing more of where he is than where others are.

Battlecast Sona15 votes

we know. you don't.

Maximum Morde2 votes

Autism is a spectrum disorder. This means that some with the disorder are basically not functional, and others are highly functional. It varies. I'm pretty sure when we use it as an insult we are referring to the nonfunctional side of the spectrum.

Battlecast Sona20 votes

the problem is that you're referring to everything. Autism or autistic isn't a word like "retarded". For those not in the know, "mentally retarded" was, at one point, a medical diagnosis. But now we've moved on because it's not specific enough (it's the medical equivalent of calling someone slow, which isn't very useful diagnostically or medically). When it got phased out, people started using it as an insult.

Autism is STILL A DIAGNOSIS. It is in fact still what everyone is classified as. It's the difference between calling someone a %%%%%% as an insult and calling someone transgender as an insult - yes, some people will see the difference between those two words, and some people will not. Some people will know what the difference is based on their experiences with the words, and some people won't. For someone with autism there is no way to take it but as an insult - it's people saying "you're stupid? you must be autistic." Even if they're just talking about the "nonfunctional" side of the spectrum, it's still inappropriate.

We don't go around calling people brain cancer patients (or any other disorder or disease) for being dumb just because the symptoms could potentially make them bad at videogames, why would you call someone autistic for the same reason? Even if you are referring to the "nonfunctional" side of the spectrum, it's a pointless insult.

Maximum Morde4 votes

All insults are pointless. They get you nothing.

Battlecast Sona10 votes

I agree completely. My point was that just because the original commenter uses the word and "is talking only about the nonfunctioning people" or whatever, doesn't somehow make it magically alright to say it because only he knows the intent of his word at the end of the day. It's still inappropriate because the point isn't "you should use the word autism correctly as an insult" but "you shouldn't use it as an insult at all".

Jorencice2 votes

I mean. Besides the ability to insult people.

Which I'm pretty sure is the entire reason they exist and why they are called insults in the first place.

grifxdonut3 votes

for someone to complain about people using a blanket term such as retarded and complain about the original commenter "referring to everything", im glad you can use a blanket statement for people with autism that they have to take it as an insult. ive got a mild version of it, but i dont take offense to someone calling me it. im not like you or the next guy or the guy who made this post. we are all different and for someone like you to think for a second that youre helping "us" by acting like you know what goes on in everyones lives and acting like you know what hurts everyone is treating people like babies. in no way am i defending the people who name-call, but for you to say that because i have it, i am forced to take it as an insult, is an insult in of itself. everyone is different and taking something as an insult is how you were raised and how you have learned to take things.

We don't go around calling people brain cancer patients (or any other disorder or disease) for being dumb just because the symptoms could potentially make them bad at videogames, why would you call someone autistic for the same reason? Even if you are referring to the "nonfunctional" side of the spectrum, it's a pointless insult.

we do do this. people joke about being "vegetables" and having poor vision and everything in between. and if its a pointless insult, then tell both sides its pointless and means nothing outside of that chat box.

Aír6 votes

So does that mean that I can call people on the internet ni**** as an insult because there are blacks our there in gangs and homeless and on the street? Even though there are plenty of successful and intelligent blacks out there (some of which I am friends with)?

In case it is too hard to find the answer, it is no. It is not okay to do that. Just like it is not okay to call someone autistic on the internet because not everyone is "disfunctional." Reasons like these made me pretend I was a guy in league for years, out of fear for being called a girl gamer. Since that is all we are according to the community. Any female in this sort of hobby or industry is just a twitch slut or a cam whore begging for sexual attention. It does not matter if I am not like that, or if I look more guyish than girlish, or that I play the game to get as good as I can... because being a girl means I am a cam whore. Thanks guys.

You appear to have unresolved issues concerning giving a shit about what anyone on the Internet thinks or says. Seek professional help to rid yourself of that problem.

It is among a spectrum of issues, including things such as believing anything a politician says, and trusting the man with the white van who says he has candy for you.
