Blitzcrank is/was intended to be a top lane bruiser. Ryze ruined a few of bruiser blitzcrank's old items like banshee's veil having Mana, and I forget what else riot removed Mana from because of ryze. His kit is fine for it, q to start a fight, w for attack speed, e for double damage and cc, r unused for extra dueling damage then used for decent burst.
I miss playing it in the old days.
I had a teammate play Braum top not all that long ago. I was not happy and even thought about dodging, but just figured, "what the fuck, I'm not in my promos anyway, so we'll see".
The Braum destroyed his lane opponent, Garen. Apparently this guy plays Braum top quite frequently. I was surprised and even apologized to him in the post game screen, because (even though I didn't say a word to him all game) I definitely judged a book by it's cover.
