I feel that toxic behavior in game would be decreased if all chat wasn't a thing

Hey guys ear here. I've always wondered why all chat is in this game, when there is no real reason to have it except to flame the other team. Yeah you can wish the enemy team luck, but you don't really want them to get lucky and win. You're just being polite. Most of the time, teams end up flaming each other for misplays, champion picks, etc; especially at the end of a match.

All chat serves no real purpose in this game, nor in any competitive game. Blizzard realized this when they made it so there was no cross faction chat in world of warcraft. They knew that the players would do nothing but flame each other and spout insults because this is the internet and in a competitive environment, emotions get heated and people will flame each other. They just avoided that, while League of Legends and Riot Games left all chat in for no real reason and then wonders why people are acting so toxic towards one another.

Yes, being able to communicate with the other team can be helpful; i.e. if a player on either side disconnects or AFKs, but since you can't ask for reports without being banned, and telling the enemy team that you have an AFK isn't going to result in the enemy team not trying to win the match anyway, there is no real reason to have it. Remove all chat.

There's really only 5 reasons for the utilization of all chat in my eyes, and this is my usage of it.

  • GL HF
  • GG
  • XYZ is AFK and that the enemy team may feel free to push whatever lane they wish into the nexus.
  • Compliment someone on a play they made that was really good, even if not good for your team.
  • Friendly banter in general.

I find the final two options are extremely rare despite my wishing they were more common. If people could be adults and compliment the other team on great plays and have general friendly banter, I don't think there would be nearly as much of a "toxicity" problem. The reason for that being that one toxic individual would be the odd man out and typically, by peer pressure to be nice like everyone else, they would likely stow their shit and behave like normal human beings. If for nothing else it would be out of the desire to not get 9xed in every lobby it happens.

As of late I find that if you're overwhelmingly positive to everyone in game it's far less likely that you'll have any forms of toxicity in your games, just because comparatively those people look substantially worse.

All chat is disabled by default, only if you go to settings and enable it you have it

Confusing. In one post, you talk about how to be respectful in chat and not make chat an overall crappy experience. Then, in another post, you ask that parts of chat be turned off. As another poster pointed out, "all chat' is off by default and you must turn it on for it to function.

As I said, confusing.

I think the vast majority of toxic behavior comes from team chat.

And it DOES serve a purpose. I'm usually constantly chatting with both teams to keep the mood lighthearted. I'm here to have fun and relax. Winning is fun, but I'd rather lose a game where I was laughing the whole time than win a game that was totally silent. Of course, I won't do so at the expense of my teammates (that's what we call trolling), and I'm still very competitive. But when you're having fun, your brain learns better. Even if someone's not too good at typing or too shy to do so anyway, sometimes someone on the enemy team is hilarious. And you'd miss out on that.

Being able to say "wp" after somebody outplays you really helps keep a sportsmanlike mood for the match too, for both sides. I want to win, but I want to win because my team is more skilled, not because the enemy blitz accidentally grabbed a tank one time and now the jungler hates them forever.
