My story: Permabanned

Hey guys my name is lIIusions and I was permanently banned from league of legends. I've been playing for over 4 years at this point and I've spent 250$ on the game (Can I charge-back anything?). I was banned for toxicity and I'm not saying I wasn't toxic I'm just saying that a perma-ban is way too harsh. I was in a game with a bunch of friends and the enemies were flaming in chat and bming. So I started flaming them back and it got to the point where I called them %%%gots. They then openly admitted to being an LGBT group. I harassed them for being gay. I don't support the LGBT movement what so ever because of my beliefs. But I do want to apologize for harassing them. I know what I did was wrong but I've been called every single word in the book thousands of times in game. I screwed up this one game and my account is gone? Seeing that I haven't had a single other offense besides a chat ban a few months ago. I also understand that a 2 week ban is usually seen before a permanent suspension. So please if any Rioter is reading this consider giving me another chance. I would rather anything than having a permanent ban. If anyone else wants to share their thoughts please do.

Riot has a zero tolerance policy for hate speech. So yeah, permaban is the punishment. It's also in the TOS you accepted.

Not supporting LGBT movement and calling people %%%gots is not the same thing. Also you have already received a chat restriction so you knew what you were doing was wrong. I don't see why you deserve less than a perma ban judging by your own admissions.

Personal politics? I called a gay group %%%gots and they all reported me. For your information it was one game. What stops me from making another account and 'being part of the community' on it again.

Don't worry about other people, just worry about yourself. At the end of the round just report them or whatever but do not fight back. The punishment system isn't "This guy did something worse so I'm not going to be punished"

Unforantly you kinda did this to yourself. If you would have just not responded to them, Then your account would be fine. Trust me as a guy who has over a thousand games won and maybe even more played. I've seen everything you can throw at me in chat. Just muting or not responding is the best answer.

So like, what's the issue here? You were toxic, used hatespeech, and literally continued harassing them after the fact they admitted they were an LGBT group. You deserved it. Good riddance. No one should have to play with something like you.

Are you trying to tell me that the rest of the community isn't toxic? I've played with people like that in almost every single game. Riot bans a player who made a mistake but is willing to change. When the rest of the community is still as toxic if not more then me? Not to mention that there is mute button in game and everyone has the option to use it.

Your ban has nothing to do with the rest of the community, it's entirely about you. Hate speech is not and should not be tolerated. The terms of service you agreed to before you started playing the game are explicit about this.

You know what you did is wrong, and you should have known that there could be serious consequences for your actions. If you didn't, then I suppose you've just gotten a pretty expensive lesson. Good luck to you if you decide to make another account, or in your future games if you don't.

If you actually don't see what's wrong with calling a gay person by a derogatory term that's affiliated with homophobia and hate crimes that's used to bully and mock one's sexual orientation, you need serious help.

Even though Riot, and the vast majority of the LoL community have absolutely zero tolerance for hate speech, and that sort of behavior. They make it very clear that using those sorts of terms, and that kind of harassment will inevitably lead to an instant permaban.

So your trying to tell me that although people are called %%%gots in game all the time. I'm called a %%%got at least once a game. But now that I offend the wrong person riot's just gonna perma ban my shit? 2 week ban at least.

No, you deserve the permaban because you're expected to act like a mature and decent human being while you play the game, if you don't, you get banned. This has always been the case. Riot explicitly states that hate speech is absolutely not tolerated in any way and will result in a permaban. You dug your own grave bud, deal with it.

And it's not so much that you "offended the wrong person", but that you offended someone that decided to report you for it, and thus you were banned for it. :)

You see that's why this whole system is so faulty. Why is there a mute button? Explain to me. Trash talking is one of the best parts about video games. If you don't like it the mute button is right there.

The mute button is there to prevent further harassment, but it is not an excuse to start it or to continue on with it. If someone has proven that they refuse to stop verbally abusing and harassing others then they eventually get removed from the game in the form of a 2-week ban or a permaban. From the Tribunal FAQ:

What's the point of having a language filter if I can get banned for 'adult' language? We aren't out to punish players who use adult language; in fact, very few players are ever banned for saying stuff like "f***, I missed that skill shot" or "damn, fing close game!" However, the language filter is not an excuse to verbally abuse someone in the game. When you verbally abuse or harass someone by calling them "fing *****" or "ngger noob", that's when you've crossed the line and will be punished by the Tribunal. I've said this before and I'll say it again, we aren't trying to clean online games of adult language; we're trying to reform or get rid of jerks who like to verbally abuse and harass other players.

Simply put, Riot says no. You can scream and cry all you want, but it is their house and their rules.

With that out of the way, I think the topic deserves some further discussion. The theory is that, if people resolved to care less, then they would be happier. I often refer to this as “Argument from Stoicism” and I think it is a fairly weak philosophy because it places the burden on the person being expected to endure the behavior rather than the person exhibiting the behavior. “You should be able to handle it” is just a flimsy excuse for being a bully or a jerk. I have to be the bigger man so that you can do whatever you want? That hardly seems fair.

There is also the issue of how I spend my limited free time. Like most people, I am constantly required to make value judgments between the different forms of entertainment that are available to me and, let's be honest, we live in an age of nearly limitless entertainment options. If I'm having a bad day in League, I can just fire up Steam and play a whole bunch of games that don't require me to put up with someone's BS.

This is not an issue of weakness or thin-skin; it's a question of choosing activities that don't leave me feeling frustrated and angry. Too many of those experiences and I'll just find something else to do. Riot knows this.

As far as trash talking goes, there's friendly/playful trash talking and then there's just being a jerk. From Ulanopo's Knowledge Base:

Yes and no. Yes, trash talk occurs, but it has definite limits. Most of the things that are punished in game (racial, ethnic and homophobic slurs, sexism, etc.) would also earn you a hefty fine in professional sports.

As for your case in question, you admit to not only retaliating negatively against someone else, but you also use racist comments as well. This has nothing to do with your religious beliefs or anything like that; simply put you were just being a jerk, plain and simple. So what if other people were toxic? That doesn't mean that you can act just like them as well and get away with it. You were judged on your actions and your actions alone, period. It's a shame that you got permabanned but you had multiple chances to change and shape up and you blew them.

P.S. Money =/= exemption from the rules here at all whatsoever.

Thanks much for your well thought out comments. I would like to refer to where you said 2 week ban or permaban. I just think a more appropriate punishment would be a 2 week suspension. What differs my case from someone who does receive a 2 week suspension. For example my friend was given a 2 week suspension for something very similar.

Punishments follow an escalating tier system as followed:

10-game chat restriction. 25-game chat restriction. 2-week ban. Permanent ban.

Whenever you receive a punishment you receive the next one in line, which in your case was a permanent ban. It is possible to actually drop down tiers by showing enough of a genuine reform effort (~3 months time), but once you hit that permaban status then that's it, it's done, it's over. For example, dropping from a 2-week ban down to just a 25-game chat restriction instead. From Ulanopo's Knowledge Base:

“Is there any way to remove my permaban?”

Keep in mind that we don’t have the power to remove your ban. Only Riot has that ability.

BANS THAT CANNOT BE LIFTED

  • Behavioral
  • Tampering with the game client
  • DDOS
  • Real-life harassment, threats or stalking
  • Elo boosting

BANS THAT MIGHT BE LIFTED

  • Inappropriate name
  • Payment problems

As for your friend I can't speak for him but most likely he either received at least 35-games worth of chat restrictions before-hand or he had his case immediately escalated to a 2-week ban for extremely poor behavior (i.e. death threats, racist comments, etc.). If he wants to discuss his ban then he can just make a thread in this forum and post his entire unedited Reform Card as well also.

Hi, I would just like to say that as an active LGBT member, you have triggered me to the highest degree. League of Legends is all about having a fun, safe environment to socialize and play in. Being gay doesn't make you a bad person, and it certainly should not be a reason to be flamed. You disgust me. There is a reason you were permabanned; and that reason is that you don't fit into the League community AT ALL.
