To Those Who Abuse Pings

? - does not mean "Wtf are you doing" It means there is an enemy last seen here and has gone MIA.

Assist me -> Just because you spammed this doesn't automatically grant you the right to blame another lane if you lose yours It means there will be a fight here soon I need someone working on a less important objective to come For example if you are a roaming support and you catch the enemy jungler with your adc/mid/jungler near, but he/she didn't see him on the map, you should use this ping to get them to come close to you. If you choose to go and fight the jungler on your own accord, then spamming this ping doesn't give you any right to complain just because your adc/mid/jungler didn't come in time.

OMW - Does not mean "I want this CS" or "this is my lane gtfo". Firstly you should never leave a lane long enough so that there's a big wave accumulated at your turret and you're still so far away that someone else managed to get there before you. If that happens, it's not your CS, it's theirs for protecting the turret. Secondly, just because your jungler/support attracted the enemy minion aggro which messed up your "freeze lane/ poke leading to denied farm then rebound up to a good recall" equation when you spammed the "OMW" ping when you are right in the lane doesn't mean you get to blame them just because you didn't play around their gank. OMW should be used for when you want your team to wait for you, that you're changing objectives, that you want help with a buff, etc.

! - does not mean "you cannot fight this person leave now!" If I am engaging on a fight that meant I have cased that person to the best of my abilities and even if I fail it's a learning experience for future games, I don't need random pings in the middle of a fight to make me pause my combo and think "what did I miss" just because you thought I might have missed something. The ! ping should be used to signal "ACTUAL" danger, like unseen enemies, or "Look at your map right now there is an enemy there"

My biggest pet peeve is probably the "target this" ping when someone who is dead or not even part of the fight uses it. It is NOT your way to give a teammate commands, no one is stupid. Once I was supporting someone and then we got in a fight between thresh and lucian and we were both attacking lucian but someone pinged "target thresh" and we both thought it was each other so we turned to kill thresh but got killed, turns out it was the top lane who explained that thresh "had more cc" so he should be killed first. Also, there was another time when were were fighting and this yasuo who got him self killed trying to 1v3 started pinging the inhibitor so our support turned to attack the inhibitor instead of peeling for our adc so me, as the top lane fiora I had to turn around and ult the diving camille so that our ADC could heal off her but got deleted by their backlines in the end because yasuo was dead and I didn't have a chance to reach their carries. Also also, there was this other time when the jungler pinged the baron and was like "start it" and we did but he just finished clearing a wave down botlane and this was bronze so no one wanted to leave baron and everyone just kept doing it then their jungler came in and stole it just like that.

Yes, there are people out there who actually respect teammates and their pings so they will trust the pings they see.

Finally, please do not spam your pings at any time, especially during a fight. New years eve has already passed, we don't need anymore fireworks. All I see is blood sweat tears and salt.

Thank you.

I generally agree with this but the one situation where I will use it to mean something like, "You can't win this fight; leave now" is when there is a pre-fight dance happening and my teammate has pinged for help (esp. if it's my help that's implied.) I'll use the ! ping to signal that I'm not coming and they should back off.

My favorite thing is when someone pings to attack the turret i've already been attacking. Gee thanks I didn't realize that I was supposed to attack this tower, now my whole life has been changed.

And then there are those of us who don't use the pings enough or always interpret them well enough. Abusing pings makes it harder to interpret pings in the first place. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this. Upvoted.

Some people also think it gives you a dash or something to escape.

I'm a support, when I get caught in the jungle I can not fight them and I need to escape or I'll probably die. So thanks for reminding me, but telling me to retreat (which I already know) does not simply grant me a way to escape.

A lot of times those pings mean exactly what you're saying they don't mean. I think what you're trying to say is "you shouldn't use pings like this", not "this is what pings mean".

if riot bans for typing wtf, I'll spam ?'s instead and not be punished when you deserve a wtf. Treat it as a learning experience

i love the guy who spam pings on me to gank him (its almost always the crybaby toplaner)and its literally 2 minutes into the game. then he dies and pings "missing person" on me. then he follows me around the jungle and says "top open" in all chat.

Great post. Pings can be so useful if used properly to help the team rather than as a way to be passive aggressive.

Assist me

this is literally asking for help. Wtf even. nah lemme just stop playing every time i wanna ask my jungler for a gank right?

! - does not mean "you cannot fight this person leave now!"

no it doesn't, it means DANGER. You picking a wrong fight isn't my problem, you can ignore my warning and get your "learnin experience" but if you had listened you wouldn't be dead. Just cuz you can't see the danger ahead of you doesn't mean someone else doesn't?

"target this" ping when someone who is dead or not even part of the fight uses it.

Oh i'm sorry i'm trying to help you when i'm already dead. Just keep focusing the ulting alistar instead of the carries, noone's stupid right? I'm sure the only one stupid for that lucian thresh fight was the guy pinging, not you for being dumb enough to switch your agro from lucian to thresh.

And aside from all that, there's multiple uses for something to be used. If someone is spamming ??? on a lane, it's prolly missing. If someone starts spamming it on an ally it's prolly "wtf are you doing" or "why?". If someone starts spamming ! it means there's danger there, wether that means unseen people or not doesn't matter. If i use the help me ping once in lane, i probably want a gank some time. If i'm spamming it i'm probably gonna die soon if you don't come help me.

Like pretty much any form of communication, Context matters.
