why ping muting is a bad idea (rant)

SecondAirbane··3 votes·1,303 views

here's a few reasons why ping mute is a bad idea if you thought people didnt listen to pings before wait until you see the implementation of ping muting they wont even hear your pings let alone be able to see them on the map watch when a bronze illegally buys a diamond account and screws the diamonds over by thinking hes a pro challenger with some bright ideas up in there(aka muting an idea he doesnt like) no communication when you get everything muted creating mass amounts of toxicity(if you thought toxicity was bad wait until you see it in a few patches)

a troll haven basically just a heaven for trolls

if i think of any more ill rant more on here

When people stop spamming the Missing ping on their own teammates (thus using it for the completely wrong reason than what it was intended for), then I'll agree. But until then, screw that.

i really dont care if people spam missing on me its better than having a team that doesnt communicate

CooL Ice Tea2 votes

But the major part of the community seems to care about it.

It doesn't bother you.

Which is why you can voluntarily not use the new mute feature.

For everyone that the ping spam DOES bother (Which are a subset of players that does not include you), they can now voluntarily use the new mute feature.

You seem incredibly worried that people will abuse the new feature. True, it probably will happen at some point. But what you don't realize is that MANY other people are ALREADY bothered by people abusing an existing feature. Just because you don't get bothered by that abuse doesn't mean everyone has to forego protections from abuse that DOES bother them

The only time that they won't see your pings only if they mute your pings.

Will some people mute everyone's pings at the very start of the game? Sure. But certainly not everyone. And I believe that people who mute everyone at the start of the game had no intention of listening to pings anyway, so it makes little difference.

watch when a bronze illegally buys a diamond account and screws the diamonds over by thinking hes a pro challenger with some bright ideas up in there(aka muting an idea he doesnt like)

The problem isn't with the muting feature here, it's with the person that illegally bought the account. If they're the type of person to mute any idea he doesn't like, he wasn't going to listen to the idea anyway even if it was in the chat.

oh trust me

it will make a difference

AeroWaffle4 votes

But I don't trust you. Do you have any reason that it will provide a noticeable difference when people can simply choose to not pay attention to pings/chat already without the mute feature?

This is a tool designed for those who already have the intention of not listening or paying attention to the chat/pings, but don't want the audio/visual noise to clutter up and get in the way of information they do want to pay attention to.

legit some of them just dont even notice and u have to ping 3 or 4 times to get them to see it

not worth explaining it to you ill let you see for yourself come back to tell me i'm right

AeroWaffle2 votes

And if they feel like those 3 to 4 pings was helpful, they'll not mute.

If they feel like those pings were more annoying than helpful, they'll consider muting your pings.

Without mute, they can just ignore the pings manually. By that, I mean by spitefully refusing to look at the map once they start hearing the ping spam.

Mutes all pings at start of game.... WTF BOT NO MIA????? 10/10

AeroWaffle2 votes

If a person pretends that everyone is not muted when they muted everyone, that's called trolling. It's obvious at that point that they just want to piss people off.

What's stopping the troll from saying, "WTF BOT NO MIA???" without the mute?

This Is Your Dad2 votes

Oh I wasn't arguing. I just thought that scenario would be great in LoL bloopers.

I have had games where people are spam pinging me the entire game for no reason. Yes, I want the option to mute them entirely.

YerroFever2 votes

I'm all for communicating with pings for MIA's, warnings about where wards are or possible danger zones because they think they saw the enemy, etc...

I'm not OK with communicating your frustration at someone. Player 1 pings Player 2 incessantly.... and unfortunately player 3, player 4, and player 5 also get pinged incessantly but they're not the targets.

You want to talk about bad ideas? Pissing 4 people off because you want 1 person angry? Geez...

just because 1 person mutes pings correctly doesnt mean everybody else will

If you read the proposed ping notes, it's a mute ping just like how you can mute one person's chat. This isn't a mute all pings from your whole team. It's mute all pings from that person.

no shit...

it's just they mute everybody's pings at start of game -20 minutes in they're farming while we're pushing lanes... 10 minutes later we're being pushed in to our nexus-- still farming

You are assuming everyone will insta-mute pings. Why do you think that will happen?

Don't you think that people will be reasonable and only mute pings when a person is abusing pings to harass?

Insta-muting all of your teammates pings at the beginning of your game is like cutting off all your fingers to prevent gangrene from ever taking your fingers.... no fingers means no gangrene fingers!

To me that is just insane.

This right here. No longer than 30 min ago, we lost a game because ONE player on our team got mad at everyone for losing baron to the enemy team. No one even blamed him (he's the jungler with smite though), yet his ego seemed so inflated that he started pinging everyone excessively every time they made a mistake. And that caused us to make more mistakes.

If I could completely get rid of his pings, I would. I already muted him in chat, because he was being very toxic. But if only I could mute his pings and make them invisible for me. Maybe still have them show up in chat, but not in-game. That would be amazing. Maybe then we wouldn't have tilted and throwed the game.

Ah.. Bad games happen. Bad players though? They need to be muted to death. And by bad, I'm not talking about mechanically. I'm talking about idiots who flame and rage like a little child.

I believe that it should not be a full ping mute option but a limited option. If you "mute" the annoying persons pings it should disable there pings to only 1 every 10 secs or longer. That way some form of communication is still there.

Sarutobi2 votes

To an extent I kinda agree. I think the worse though is people who mute chat/ping then will complain that we didn't Mia/ping Mia. I already have this happen now with chat. I ping at least 3 times when I sense an enemy is missing and people still complain when I don't do it enough.

Now with being to mute any and all communications I can see people bitching and moaning in chat because we are alerting them when they mute everything. It's going to be annoying towards those types of people.

These types of people are already revealing themselves as trolls. You don't stick earplugs in your ears then start complaining about how you can't hear.

Trolls can already pretend that you didn't warn them or ping them before the mute ping is implemented.

the bronzie is going to ruin diamond games with or without pings.

You just mad because you cant ping spam an ally when they make a mistake now.

Oh well. Better find other ways to tilt your allies now, if you can. [slayer-jinx-wink]

pings are soo annoying that I set my alarm tones to ping spamming, now I actually get up at 6 am for work lol

MrToozeIgo1 votes

Yea Iv been looking for a post like this for ages. Instead of muting all pings it should reduce the rate you receive pings from that player, meaning if they once annoyed you in gane with obnoxious pings when they actually have usefully information like MIA or a danger ping in a bush they are about to face check you'll know about it.

Iv had this so much as a support main, I feel like the more information I can give to my adc about the surrounding area the more they can focus on lane. But every once in a while I get a adc with the worst attitude and thinks he can run the lane by himself, he goes ahead and mutes my chat and pings. My god the amount of pinged enemys that they walk into and die then complain in all chat 'shit support' 'no help' all because he muted my pings for no good reason.

This applies to everyone who mutes at the start of the game and when someone is beingl annoying in chat, in my opinion pings are almost as important as vision.
