There's been a large misunderstanding

I keep seeing people throughout the boards say that Riot is fine with trash talking, as long as you aren't a dick to your teammate. However, this is a very misinformed statement. Why is that? Well, let's look at the actual definition of "trash talk."

Results according to dictionary definition

Trash talk - insulting or boastful speech intended to demoralize, intimidate, or humiliate someone, especially an opponent in an athletic contest

See that guys? Insulting speech. Demoralize, intimidate, humiliate.

Banter - the playful and friendly exchange of teasing remarks

As you can see, the two are polar opposites. So, to say that Riot will not ban you for trash talk is simply not true. They ban players daily, loyal or not, for this exact reason. A large number of people on the boards seem to be confusing trash talk with banter.

Being a logophile myself, it was irritating for me to see people misunderstanding two completely different terms. Just wanted to clear things up. Have a great day guys!~

or boastful.

"wow nice flash" is trash talk. Saying that after the enemy wastes flash in lane is perfectly permissible in League.

"Caw Caw Motherfucker" when using a fiddle ult and getting kills is trash talk. That is perfectly permissible in League.

Demoralizing the opponent in League is not prohibited if in moderation. Competitive BS and trash talk are allowed - until they become harassment and belittling. What your definition of trash talk does not account for is when something is trash talk and when it crosses the line into harassment or belittling behaviors.

All I know is I reported someone for saying "gg ez" and "nice flash" before I left the game, and I came back about a month later to find verification of a report leading to punishment. So for as many people as are debating your stance, I've actually seen substantiated evidence to your claims.

There's a difference between trash talk and harassment and flaming.

People call it "trash talk" when they want to get away with harassing and flaming a teammate and get a punishment reversed.

Just because you describe a lion as an 18 wheeled vehicle, doesn't make a lion an 18 wheeled vehicle.
