Can I Get An Account Ban Lifted On Grounds Of Mental Illness?

ResonanceTheGod·5/11/2016, 6:07:22 AM·4 votes·3,134 views

There was an account I had that got banned due to toxicity about a year ago. I usually don't like to talk about my issues, but I have severe clinical depression and anxiety. The issue alone has rendered me unable to work a job, and I'm receiving government assistance. I play this game a lot more frequently than I probably should, but nothing else interests me more than this game. I tend to have high anxiety in my ranked games, and have had instances of anxiety attacks costing me games because of this. Due to my high anxiety and depression, I tend to say things that probably shouldn't be said. If I could get some kind of an accommodation, where I was chat restricted during games to prevent me from ruining the experience of others, or if there was a setting where I could limit my messages sent per game, that would be very helpful.

There are things you can do to help yourself. For example, there are ways you can unbind your enter key so it's impossible for you to type things in chat. I understand you have a disorder but that doesn't make you unable to control your actions. If you punched someone in real life you'd still be arrested for assault, you can't just say "I have a disorder" and expect to be forgiven for everything.

I have PTSD which causes me to be very aggressive at times but I've never received a punishment in this game (and I've been playing since season 1.) Just because you have a disorder doesn't mean you don't have control over your body or your actions nor does it mean you shouldn't be held accountable when you do something wrong.

Unfortunately, Riot can't make exceptions like this. If they did, they'd have to go to a lot of trouble to verify your mental diagnosis, and then have to go to that same trouble again for EVERY person thereafter trying to claim a mental illness defense. They simply don't have the resources needed to make such a thing feasible.

As someone who's in a similar boat as you, though, I wish you best of luck with whatever you do. It can be tough not feeling like there's a place for you out there, but you need to stay positive.

Reading your entire chat throughout this thread i came to one conclusion. You are Eric Cartman incarnation. You are trying to abuse your "condition" to get what you want even when you dont deserve it. Remember that south park episode where Cartman pretended he has Tourettes syndrome.

Honestly u shouldn't even be playing this game let alone be posting on the forums if you have severe anxiety and depression problems. This game will only worsen your condition and possibly even kill you or land you in the hospital. One thing you need to keep in mind is how toxic this community is and the amount of hackers that play this game. Over all you should count your blessings your account got banned since it probably saved your life more than anything. As a person who also suffers from chronic depression I tend to not play when I'm in that state, it only worsens my current condition. It's sort of like smoking if you suffer from severe asthma... not good for you

ResonanceTheGod, as other people hav already pointed out it is not feasible for Riot to investigate claims about mental health. Nor would it make much sense for them to factor it in when handing out bans or not. Your behavior, despite being understandable if you were in that bad shape, still affects the other people in your games.

That said, you say you've had no chat restrictions on this account. This indicates that you are making progress - either by feeling better or by controlling you behavior better. If you feel like this is an ongoing problem for you, it's probably worth talking to your therapist about it.

Good riddance. I have severe manic depressive disorder, and have never once used it as an excuse to lash out at other players.

If anything, a mood disorder like this should cause you to be MORE understanding of the obstacles in life that cause other players to not be at their best.

Your struggle turns into other peoples' struggles, which takes an internal mood disorder and makes it contagious.

You obviously know how it feels to reach rock bottom. How do you feel knowing that your behavior has influenced others to feel that same low that you were at?

You should be ashamed of yourself. Consciously, and actively-aware.

Seeya never.

EDIT: As a student of psychoanalytical behavior, it's extemely rare and unbelievable that a person has attempted suicide twice and still fails to accept responsibility for their actions which result in a punishable consequence. ESPECIALLY in something as insignificant to biological existence such as a video game.

Maybe you need to seek psychodynamic therapy in order to resolve this issue, not a Riot Games employee.

Look, if I've been able to have civil discussions with the users here, then so can you. You just need to change your approach, in a big way.

Here's one of my threads, if you want to see me discuss my own ban with people.

You can have more control than you think, you just need to work at it.

Makes a thread.

Says nothing negative.

Gets downvoted.

Yep, this is the boards I was posting to.

Unbind your chat key. Pop Enter out with a screw driver if you need to. Turn off all chat. Or just don't type. In fact make the chat window so small that you can't read it. Problem solved.

One thing you need to change though is that view of yours. Those games that your anxiety cost "you" cost 4 other people the game as well. You seem completely self-centered, and the fact that you are saying "Ableist" to anyone who disagrees with you shows that you've learned how to play a professional victim even though that word doesn't apply to the things you are applying it to. But hey it's 2016! If someone says something is offensive it is without any validity to the statement!

You do realize that you are asking Riot for a favor in the completely wrong location right? This isn't a support ticket where you'd be talking with just Riot where they are setup to help people with questions/issues. This is the community forum where Riot occasionally frequents. My guess is you actually DO like to talk about your issues which is why you are here. In your first post you've said anxiety/depression over 5 times. You even keep going into further detail even though no one asked, or said anything that would have made your oversharing valid. In reply posts you continue to do so even when it has no relation to what you are replying to. You seem to be seeking attention, and possibly might be trolling. If you are trolling you are simulating an overly-offended no-common sense individual perfectly. It's super convincing. If you are being serious... You are on a public forum talking about having anxiety, and depression. Neither of those usually allow you to do the very thing you are doing. If you truly can't work because of it then you shouldn't be able to type on a public forum online either.

From what I've seen you post to people who are offering help, you deserve this. Disorder or no. You are acting like a jerk. Furthermore, I refuse to debate this.

@Riot can you take down these abelists posts that are constantly bullying me? They're literally saying nothing constructive and being toxic.
