If you lose lane to a riven...

Who can't animation cancel, A.K.A (these are most basic) AA-Q-MOVE-AA-Q-MOVE-AA-Q. E-Q. E-R-Q. R-Q. Then you are trash. Any riven who can't animation cancel wastes out on more damage then just q'ing three times. You should be able to shut down riven with a ranged champion like kennen,ryze, or teemo. However, you need to play it right because if she can get to you she will destroy you. Tanks that have a lot of early game damage such as garen,renekton,and shyvana will give riven a hard time. If rivens can't kill you before level 6 they will wait to hit 6 because their ult gives them a huge power spike. If they aren't low hp they will look to go in. Most rivens when behind will have no idea what to do or how to come back in the game, most knowledgable rivens will just try and burst down your squishes because even if she's behind, she still will do damage to squishes. If you're a tank stack armor and she can't touch you early game unless she goes brut:last whisper. And even then, she won't have her life steal items unless she has 2+ doran blades.

Tl;dr riven does a lot but can't do everything and there are multiple ways to shut her down. Take advantage of rivers who can't animation cancel because they waste out on huge amounts of damage and their burst combo is slower.
