Unpopular Opinion Alert: I miss old soloQ
I am going to do my best to explain myself. Last season was the first time since Season 2 that I reached Gold. In my opinion, the reason I was able to climb was because I learned how to be carried by my teammates. The best way for me to get carried, I found, was to let every person take the role they were best at, and I would fill in whatever was left.
I honestly feel that I don't have a "main" champion right now, or a main lane/role for that matter. In prior seasons, I mained top lane and support, in turns specifically playing Renekton, Singed, Nami, and Taric as my primary champions. The theory of "master a specific champion then climb by only playing that champion" never worked for me. I realized that my #1 role was on a low-Silver elo level, which is right around where I hovered for 3+ years. I then realized that if I let other players pick their #1 role, I could slide into pretty any other role decently enough that I could get carried. To say it another way, my second or third choice for a role was better than my teammates' second or third roles. Were they better at a specific role than I was? Sure. But I felt I was better as an overall player than they were, without being pigeonholed into specific champions or lanes.
All this being said, I have been struggling with this new champion select in "Dynamic Draft" ranked games. Instead of working together with my teammates to find out who is best in what lane, or what their #2 or #3 or #4 option is, I just have to select "fill" and get whatever the system wants me to have. The difference between "hey, I'm a very solid top laner and jungler, but I suck at mid, can you do one of the other roles" conversations, and the Matchmaking system telling me what to play, is very understated. I miss the old style of Solo Queue champ select, because in my opinion there is less communication and teamwork from the start of the game. I cannot express how much of a difference a "Hello all! I'll gladly fill whatever is needed this game. Who is best in what lane?" conversation gives to the morale of a team.
I'm not sure why I'm writing all this, other than to see if maybe some other people feel the same way, or if they have some advice for me to help with the new champ select. Judging by the history of Riot's decision making, I highly doubt they will undo any of the changes they've made. While I understand and respect their policy of not reneging prior changes, due to an effort to continually grow and raise profits from League (which for a quick tangent, there is nothing wrong with making money - it's literally what a for-profit business is supposed to do on a continual basis), I can honestly say I strongly dislike the new ranked system. I'm going to do my best to stick it out, possibly revert back to "mastering" a champion and attempting to carry strategy, but based on my prior failures, I don't have a strong outlook.
TL;DR: I miss old solo queue champ select because I'm bad at League, and I know I need to be carried to move up the ladder. I enjoy playing tanks and supports in pretty much every game I play, and those roles by design are not made to carry others, so I will have a very hard time climbing the ladder unless I change my playstyle again.
