Are you a Quitter?

If you're playing a game and the game is going south, do you jump on the surrender wagon, or do you tough it out, just for the gameplay?

I've noticed a lot... and I mean a LOT... of players who say that the very SECOND they feel things aren't going their way, the game is lost and everyone should quit. Time and time again, a tower will go down, or the whole team will get ganked and killed, and surrender pops right up instantly. If you question why people are surrendering, the response is almost always, "There's no way we can win anyway so just give up." or "What do you mean why? Are you stupid or something? Look at how badly we're getting beaten!" Well... I think it's at that point that you should keep playing, not quit.

When your team is down by a lot, that's the time when your reflexes sharpen, your mind works a bit faster, and the gameplay really gets fun. You start to try to work out what you can do since things are really tough, and if you honestly focus as a team, you find yourself doing better. Quitting just takes the pressure off. It means you can't handle even the slightest bit of controversy, and you really don't care about winning unless it's a "gimme"... unless you're strolling through the game with no trouble, racking up ridiculous amounts of kills or what have you. Otherwise, you turn tail and run. And I think that really messes up the overall experience.

I'll give an example. Once I was playing Mordekaiser with my team in the blue camp. About half way through the game one guy just quit. He was one of those angry, in a hurry players who was always blaming things on others and after dying one time too many, suddenly he was gone. When that one left, another one just gave up as well; this one didn't even say anything, just died, reappeared at base and never moved again. This left us in a 3 vs 5 game with the other team ahead in levels, and several of our outer towers down. Of course everyone started talking about quitting, but I wasn't interested. I talked to them and suggested things we could do to win. This was back when you could talk to the other team, and they were pretty sure they had won the game too, so they were apologizing over our leavers... but I was telling them it wasn't over yet. Mostly I got laughed at.

But I guess I got through to the other guys on my team, because we tried for a win anyway. The three of us started to focus down their towers, and it was all they could do to keep us off. We made careful returns so no one died, and ran right back into battle again and again. the other team couldn't seem to stop us, and after taking down the last mid lane tower, we pushed right in and won the game. They tried to do the same, but had wasted too much time trying to gank and kill us while we played really carefully... by the time they got into our camp, just starting on the first inhibitor, we were already landing the last shots on their base and came from behind with a two man deficit to win.

It was THE most memorable win... and the most FUN win, I've ever experienced.

So which camp do you count yourself in? Would you rather rush to the next game, giving up on the one you're playing, so you can try to get a better result? Or do you like the added pressure, and keep trying right until the very last second? Do you have any good stories of a time you were sure you were gonna lose, but won anyway?

I only surrender when I'm the only one left willing to play it out.

I generally vote no to the surrender if my vote will be the one to end the tallying. But if my team has 4 yes votes, then I just click whatever I flick to.

I never ff a game, unless we're down 2 towers in each lane, the enemy is up by 40 kills, and I just see not a sliver of hope left.

tl;dr - When I'm down 2 games worth, it's generally over.

It's not over til it's over.

That said, I'll give up, but the conditions have to be pretty damn severe and there generally have to be other people trying to surrender. I've won too many "hopeless" games to truly believe that games can be lost in 20 minutes, and the longer a game goes the less likely I am to surrender. One of my pretty common surrender conditions is losing all 3 inhibitors though, that's pretty impossible to come back from. Double super waves are... strong.

I think I tend to sway to the majority vote if it's bad because, sure, while I may be willing to keep trudging on, I'd rather not force four other people to stick it out and waste their time with my stubbornness where playing would be a moot point because their hearts are simply not in it if they're willing to surrender.

Premature quitters are the definition of cancer for me.

I had this game with this one guy who picked Fiora into Pantheon and blamed the jungler for failing to gank enough. Then she just ragequit despite the fact that our team was pretty much built to outscale theirs. So, yeah, 4v5. item 3070

To me there are three different situations when a game is going poorly.

  1. The enemy is clearly better than we are. In this type of game I will never surrender, even if it's not a close match. I revel in the challenge of fighting a superior opponent! I won't care what the scores are, if there is no hope of victory, or if every fight we have is a loss. It is a learning experience to fight more skillful opponents.

  2. We are losing and it's our fault. This is another type of game I will never surrender. If my team and I throw hard early and our enemy pushes their advantage we will likely lose, but there is a chance for a comeback. Learning to come back from a near loss is an important skill, and a reminder now and again is never a bad thing.

  3. The cheese is strong with our enemy. Whether it is their picks, their talking in all chat, or the BM they show while playing there are some games I simply do not want to play. I enjoy a tough match, but when my enemy is showing off every chance they get I will likely lose the will to continue the game. At the end of the day this is a game, and I do not want to spend my time playing with people who's main focus is to make the game a living hell for their opponents. If I'm teamed with these type of people I will push hard and try to win while they are messing around, but if I am against them I will be all for a surrender vote.

I am usually the first to call for a surrender vote, but that doesn't mean that I am a quitter. Yesterday, I played a match where my team was behind the entire match and heavily behind at certain points, but not only did I not call for a surrender vote, I didn't even suggest for one (which someone else did). I could see that my team had the better team composition and that our mid Akali was really making an effort to help other lanes with their woes (and offered much more assistance to our team than any individual player on the other team did for theirs (and btw, we won).

And I don't wait at the fountain if my team refuses to surrender. Doing so is dumb and ban-worthy. Believe it or not, there are many matches that are unwinnable where the enemy outclasses your entire team completely. I tend to be able to read the flow of a match much better than I am able to play the game, so I am often able to call whether my team will lose or not at the 20 minute mark (possibly earlier), even if the game ends up lasting 55 minutes with my team being unable to take a single inhibitor (that might be a long game, but it most certainly isn't a close game).
