I've got it - bring back the HUD from '09 beta!
With all the recent HUD debate, I realized the solution: Don't just go back, go ALL the way back!
HUD 2009 was elegance, usefulness, and visual clarity combined. Just check out these features:
Giant champion portrait: The first thing you'll notice, looming over everything else, is the huge champion portrait. Control of your champion is the primary element of gameplay. Logically, this should be reflected in the UI. It adds immersion, and makes sure we wont forget which champion were playing (this is especially helpful for Mundo).
Large base TP icon: As the base teleport is the only spell you'll consistently access, regardless of champion or summoner spells, it deserves a prominent spot next to the champion portrait. The large icon size reminds us that good players should use the "b" button tens, if not hundreds, of times.
Removal of MR stat: Unlike physical damage, magic has very mysterious properties. It stands to reason that powers of magical resistance should be equally ambiguous. It also lets new players know that MR isn't a very important stat.
Foot-long mana and health bars. Let's face it, champions in the League are powerful. What is it saying about these characters if they're running around the rift with dinky little health/mana bars? Perhaps we should even consider making them longer, stretching them around the corners of the screen.
Large zoom-in and zoom-out buttons Zooming in is the secret strategy pro players don't want you to know about. It isn't fair for Riot to hide this from novice players. Give us all a chance to get to diamond - bring the zoom buttons back!
Summoner name: This definitely belongs on the HUD. Nuff said.
Big, non-symmetrical frame: Small, symmetrical HUDS are boring. We&'re gamers, not dusty old neat-freak librarians. C'mon Riot, spice things up a bit!
Well, there you have it folks. I think the facts speak for themselves. Riot, you really need to go back to your roots on this one. Also, did you guys check out that champion art? I think it's time for a "throwback" splash update across the board. Let's go Riot, this is the LoL that Gotham deserves.
