First time provisionals.

I have a quick question about the first time you do your provisionals,

What decides on what tier you land in? A little into season 5, right after I hit level 30, I went into ranked, and did my provisionals, really stupid idea, but anyways, I ended up going 2-8, and getting into bronze 3, and that's probably where I belonged, as I was unskilled, and I didn't have a really good insight on the game, then, inevitably, I was demoted to Bronze 5, well six months have gone by, and I'm in silver 5.

Then my girlfriend decided to do her provisionals for the first time, going 3-7, and landing in silver four, what decides where you land for the first time?

If you've never Ranked before, you have a fresh baseline MMR. It's something like mid-low Silver and you'll get placed somewhere around there based on the games you win.

In the next season you play you'll already have MMR, so you'll do the 10 placements and you'll get placed somewhere around that MMR.

It's also important to note that with a new season, everyone that has Ranked will lose some MMR in a "soft reset" in order to give people progression to do. If your MMR is above where you were actually ranked, you can get placed in the same rank or even higher if you do well. If you were average or below then you'll probably go down 1-3 divisions.

Wherever you place this season, you can work on your MMR all pre-season and it won't affect your rewards, but it will affect your placement for next season (for example, you get Silver 5 this season, but during preseason you build up to Silver 1, next season you can get a much better placement than Silver 5).
