Perhaps it's because they change the game in so few ways, but I always forget to upgrade my minion. I am 1 "level 3 upgrade" away from my GP icon (I have spent 750 krakens already). Last game I was at the same milestone, and had the final 20 krakens needed to upgrade. I forgot to, and the opposing team FF'd soon after.
I been spending mine to accomplish the requirements for the GP icon.
Other than that the effect the brawlers have on the game in my experience is so small it's not even noticeable. The only thing good about this mode was the progression to get the icons. There wasn't anything really noticeably different about summoners rift. If they plan on bringing it back next year with the same progression and rewards then I know I won't be playing it.
