Why do people only complain about a champion once a pro picks them up?

I'm starting to see a bunch of kalista related discussions lately. Everyone is starting to complain about her now, after she was picked up in the lcs. However a month or two ago next to no one was complaining about her even though she was just as strong. Its the same thing with zed. He was almost never played a year ago, he was never complained about a year ago. He shows up in competitive and everyone starts calling him an unfair champion. These champions were not buffed, they were the same strength for a while. So why start complaining about them now when you didn't complained about them before.

It's because no one realizes what the champion is capable of. If a regular player can't pick a new champion up and faceroll, it won't really get talked about until there's a way to faceroll.

(FYI Zed is now considered OP because Riot nerfed mana regen in the S5 preseason, which was an indirect buff to manaless Zed.)

I'm calling bull, tons were complaining about her.

It's the sheep mentality. Obviously if the pros use X champ, X champ is mad OP and needs to be nerfed. It even happens when a new pick from the usual patch meta appears in the LCS and has great success, drones of people run to solo Q picking that champion thinking that they will get instant success on it just because a pro player in a specific comp, with a specific strategy, with a specific build, in a specific game happened to faceroll with it.

Because some people don't like seeing the same champion in every game they play.

There's over 100 champions to choose from and every time I see some tryhard playing lee sin or ahri or some other fotm pick I just think that the person in question doesn't actually know the game, they're just trying to copy someone better than they are instead of trying to actually be good themselves.

The pro players give it visibility. Also, having someone as skilled as Doublelift, Meteos, Bjergsen, Zionspartan, or Calitrlolz(or any other number of expert players) using a champion puts that champ's real potential in view a lot more than random plat noob #21422 saying x champ is op.

Because people would rather their favorite champion get buffs than anything else, and anything that killed them get nerfs. They do not care about balance. They think "It was in LCS" means it's OP, and "Haven't seen it in the last 2 weeks on LCS" means it is trash tier.

Take Anivia as proof; it keeps getting picked in Nemesis Draft because they think she sucks. But Froggen is on her right now so I guarantee they don't give Anivia to the enemy for the rest of Nemesis now. Will go up in ranked picks too.

The pro plays it, then everyone tries to emulate what they see the pro doing.

People have been complaining about Kalista since release. Not sure where you have been to be honest. I even seen multiple "wait til the pros start playing and pick her" threads because then the community will see how stupid she is. She has crazy mobility, obnoxious objective control, high damage, and utility. All from the ADC position.

With Zed, he has been strong. Like, the same strength he is now. The problem is that they nerfed every mana based champion. Now he can spam high damage skills with no cost without you being able to keep up. They also nerf quite a bit of mid laners. Use your head OP :D

She's been complained about since she was on the PBE. Almost everyone saw this coming when they gave an ADC massive mobility with little restriction.
