Special conditions - Mystery Champs. Riot trickery? The store needs a change!
Backstory: While checking for champion sales in the store I noticed that there was a mystery champion option. I was deciding if I wanted to use my RP to purchase it or not and, after a little bit of math, I decided that it would be great opportunity for me to finish off my champ collection. I'd only have two champs left to unlock after burning through all my RP! Turns out I was in for a rude awakening.
I purchased two mystery champs and got two 3150 ip champs, rough start! Oh well, I had thought it through earlier and knew my RP spent to IP value was still going to be a good ratio! So I continued on, I clicked the mystery champ icon, then clicked unlock. Instead of getting a new champ there was this little box that popped up and read, "You can't use the mystery champ anymore because you need a pool of ten champions or higher". What?! Where did this come from? I had checked the store for champion sales all the time. That day I had saw the mystery champ option which seemed awesome. After purchasing it twice, and only once I had met the special conditions, it pops up saying, "There are special conditions to this purchase!"
I contacted Riot through the support and got a nice reply. They said that mystery champs are non-refundable and that all my suggestions should be posted on the community boards because they can't do anything in the support page. So now I'm here doing that, hoping this will fix the problem with the store.
What I suggested was this: Have a popup when you click the 'mystery champ' button. The pop up would say "There are special rules for this store item. Check them out here!" My reasoning was this: not every player reads the forums before making a store purchase.
This, to me, and possibly to others like me, is trickery. An option to purchase a mystery champ appears in the store with no warning of special conditions. If something is non-refundable I feel like that's something that should be made very obvious, not something that I need to make a support ticket to find out. Another problem I had was the limit on the mystery champs. If I had known there was a limit I wouldn't have purchased them because the ratio of my RP spent to IP value wouldn't have been desirable! In legal contracts they use the term unfair surprise to describe this. If a term isn't pointed out in the offer (the champ limit and no refund-ability in this case) then that term is removed from the contract since the seller should have made the buyer aware of the terms.
What I asked: I asked for my two champions I got to be refunded. Since, had I been made aware of the conditions, I wouldn't have purchased any mystery champs. I did not receive a refund, but now that I know they can't be refunded maybe I should have asked for something different. What does Riot do for this sort of thing? Does anyone have any experience with this scenario?
Skip here for TL:DR I hope many of you agree with me, that with special condition items in the store, the conditions need to be linked to the store item. Making the conditions a mandatory read before purchasing a special conditions item. Not just posted in a thread online that customers may or may not see before making purchases.
