I have 0 problems with this, I honestly see nothing wrong with taking alot of things support some people just don't like, but there are a few things you should at least grab while being that off meta support

Get a Sightstone, while warding is a team effort, and I don't expect all wards on the map to be yours, please at the very least, grab a SS
Don't take cs unless you got a targons, No, that doesn't mean you can't cs, if there's an empty lane and cs is there, take it. Don't rush to every lane and push it out for farm tho. And most support mains know the instances when there are 2 or more minions low and the adc can't possibly kill them both, take whichever one the adc isn't aiming it, cs lost is gold lost for the team.
Actually support the TEAM

I'm very salty about my last loss, in which i had a support kalista, who claimed it was an extremely strong pick. Sure i could see the benefits of it, but after checking his record it didn't seem like he could pull it off. He spent the entire game pushing a lane til he died, if you tried to split push they would just come at us with 5, then go finish him off after, If you tried to push with him, he'd just recall and push a diff lane.

Now had they bought a gold item, bought a sightstone, stayed with the team, fought with the team, and you know, made an actual attempt to win the game, I'd prolly not be salty about this loss. Instead, I'm now wondering why there isn't a first pick went support kalista option under report section

I honestly don't care what support someone chooses to play. I trust my teammates to make strange picks work.

As a support main, I'm sick of people kicking me out of support and then not supporting.

AP Caitlyn support, who ended up doing the most damage on the team (we had AD everywhere else, so nobody built armor). One of my better moments.

I get really angry when someone takes support from me and then plays full AP Blitzcrank. I've gotten pretty well accustomed to placing the most wards on my team regardless of the role I play, since my supports never seem to understand that the purpose of spending 800 gold on a Sightstone is to allow you to actually place wards with that Sightstone.

I'd like to point out that none of those points are limited to off meta supports. It is just as frustrating to have a meta support that takes all the CS, doesn't get a sightstone, and tries to splitpush.

... I've been grateful most of the split pushing Leona's I've seen lately have been on the enemy team.

Interestingly enough, not too long ago, i went on to spam Sona support for half a day, and every single enemy Sona support(Mirror match ftw) that i had to face that day would go on to CS along with their ADC, last hitting and all, rarely warded, Not taking advantage of their Passive (Power Chord) for bonus op harrass damage, max heal first instead of Q, and would 99% lose their lane against me because "Omg this other Sona is doing too much dmg, how? rito plz nerf". Get zoned indefinitly along with their ADC away from any CS because they were afraid of me, the ganks from their jungler would always fail because i warded like a beast during the laning phase,and then go on to rush either or instead of going straight for a and placed 0 ....so much freelo for me that day.

And by the end of the laning phase** my inventory **would look like:

Sona : item 3098 item 2049 item 3341 item 2043 x2 item 3158

And the enemy Sona's looking like:

Sona : item 3340 item 3303 item 1001 item 1026

........The fk? do you not know how to Sona?? like are you new to supporting? xD

I'm not going to judge you for going for the OP AP items but that sh**'s not going to help you the 1st 15mins if my jungler decideds to camp you because you thought a small bit of extra dmg is more important than early game vision, and cdr..i promiss you, i'm letting my jungler know if your summoners are on CD, and that your team has no wards in my lane or tri..bruh i want that early item 3285 too,and my ADC Tristana is looking at that early item 3031 , and your just helping us get it faster by playing in the dark, and sharing split CS with your ADC.

I can see how a Kalista support would work, but this person didn't execute it correctly. For one, Kalista can't split push at all unless you get Hurricane. If you are going support, you shouldn't even build it unless it's late game. Second, there isn't a reason to pick Kalista support if you don't stay with the team. The whole purpose of a Kalista support is to ult to save the adc and auto so the adc does a little more dmg and to use w to scout. It sounds like none of these things were done by this summoner.

i really love taking Ashe support :} people will flip shit in my games about it though, but its actually pretty fun, and I can still support better as ashe than I see most people doing with a normal support :/

Since i main it (support), and I'm always the only one who wards >.> but its a fun game once i hit level 6 with her. She's such a good utility champ I don't really see why more people dont do it for fun x)

'Tis a fun, poke-tastic, high-utility lane. There are some mobility/peeling shortcomings and the like, but as long as you know how to play around/with them it's fine...

I think a support Kalista would work well with an adc Mordekaiser.

Reason being, Mordekaiser deals close ranged damage, whereas Kalista brings long range damage and speed. At the same time, Kalista can throw Mordekaiser towards an escaping enemy to proc Mordekaiser's 3rd Q as well as an escape. Kalistas throwing ability saves any ally for similar scenarios, and when working together they balance each other out areas of damage.

Of course I've never tried it before, so I shouldn't say. It was just cool to th i nk about from reading this thread.

Post 6 it does seem to work, but pre 6 sounds pretty poor. You have no cc aside from Kalista's slow, so someone like a Blitz, Thresh, or even Braum would be able to force engages that are difficult to deal with. No sustain means that someone like Sona or Nami would be able to poke while healing off whatever damage Kalista is able to poke with. You'd be able to secure objectives pretty well with Morde's 3rd hit and Kalista's stacks, but unless you can get a solid engage off (again difficult with little cc), your laning phase is going to rely a lot on Kalista's ability to poke without getting poked back.

I have no idea just how gold dependent Kalista is, but I have a feeling that a support income with support items would cause her damage to be lackluster, made even worse since she doesn't have tankiness nor an amount of utility that is able to make up for it. She seems like the only reason you'd want her is if you wanted a secondary source of AD not as strong as a standard gold/build carry, which I don't see the composition that would make it worthwhile.

Any AD champ that doesn't have % damage has a hard time as support since they also are often not tanky nor have utility, but an AD character with % damage is able to consistently put out damage despite gold starvation and try to get by.

Shhh, don't tell them about Gragas support :P

But anyway, any champ with cc, peel, and/ or engage on 2 or more spells can support pretty well. Just build sight stone and support your team.

One thing I don't like is when your team flames you for getting a few kills, especially while playing a support that does damage like Annie or Vel'koz.

I've had a couple of times when a Gragas support saved my life... I doubted him at first, but after seeing him make it work, i stopped doubting.

That Gragas may have been me if it was a normal game.

He is kind of sup par early in the lane phase, but he is great against hard engage like Leo. Also really good against hook champs in team fights, if a hook lands I just use R to "reset" the fight. He does have amazing peel and can engage just fine with item 3800 or flash e combo.

I'm still working on support Gragas to take into ranked, but so far in normals it's working really well.

One time I accidentally R'd a enemy Nasus right to my adc O.O woops.

I have gone Malphite support because the entire enemy team went ad, except the support, which I think it was a Thresh. Normally people are a little iffy about my non - meta picks any way.

What people don't realize is that when the support gets a kill it helps them out so much. That 300 ish gold takes so long to get even with a gold item. If I'm not support I don't care if the support gets a kill, it helps them support better and faster.

Yesterday i went Brand support because you know I'm a casual and still build sightstone and got support items.

All I need was Rylai's and Lyandry's and I did the most damge on the team.

The funny thing was is that my ADC did the least damage on the team.

If you want a sightstone, get it yourself. Played this game long enough to not need wards ( Diamond 3 no backtalk)
Agreed here, no reason to take cs as support unless no one is there.
Depends, if my team is good ill build auras. If you guys are feeding im going to go AP and try to make plays. Don't like it? Too bad you fed so you don't get a say.

While Vel and Brand aren't exactly bad supports, I sure have had numerous people yell at me for the picks. No matter to me as I'll carry them to victory. The one thing that I might add is SOMETIMES, not that much, I won't go sight stone. Hear me out first though.

It has to meet certain criteria, one of which my ADC is just not in the game whatsoever, and we're pushed into the tower all game. In that instance, generally I'll try and wait until 9, upgrade my trinket, and that lets me get more damage to potentially make a comeback. I only ever do it on maybe Brand and Vel, but there are times where maybe the ADC got stuck with the role, or are just having a bad game, and I'll need to pump out the damage for both of us.

As someone who has seen some horrible Brand supports and mid laners, I would like to commend you for making it work and not avoiding it just because it's not considered meta.

Where I'm at in Normals MMR (I don't Ranked, 2 much stress 4 me), no one ever groups too tightly against AoE wombo comps, and no one ever separates against pick/assassin comps

He's a solid support. He doesn't work against every team, but he has solid harass with his passive, and a fairly easy stun if they try and engage. You play him a bit like annie, but without the team wide stun, you just have a team wide nuke. He works really well with champs that snowball hard, draven being a good example, as both of you put out just tons of damage.

It's nice to be Brand support and still be able to 1 v 2 and live.

a few exceptions to rule 2....

your aoe damage on them took a cs, ok that's cool.

50 gold short on sightstone? take a minion or two, it will help more than it will hurt, just don't abuse this reasoning.

Annie charging up for a stun and low on mana, have at it. Chogath feast up baby. Nunu consume for your sustain, ok. TahmKench use the minion to poke, the damage means more than 1 cs. Syndra use the minion to poke, the damage means more than 1 cs. Sion use the minion to poke, the damage means more than 1 cs.

I've had a game where I had a Heimerdinger support. I couldn't farm correctly. I don't mind having exotic supports in bot lane, but at least support the adc rather than take their farm.

I don't mind off-meta support picks. The thing that pisses me off is that whenever I have an off-meta support pick on my team, the player does not play the support role correctly and in general does not contribute accordingly.

It's like picking an off-meta tank, but not being tanky.

I just love to play Orianna sup , as our mid pick yasuo and jg sion #wombo combo. Nidalee and Sejuani works well , but sometimes ppl just albuse non meta sup reason with lb , katarina , zed support just don't fucking work

I LOVE of meta picks as supports, but a lot of the time I can't trust the players simply because they build full ap/ad and I have to nag them repeatedly to get a sightstone. Annoys me a lot hehe
