Because I have 666k mastery and that is hilarious to me.
Some people may want the small bonuses it gives, like the loading screen banner and custom emote or want to show the love for their champion.
It is also something to accomplish and strive for even if it may be easy to get. Humans love to achieve and be successful no matter how big or small. Games that give people something to work on will give people incentive to play and possibly try out new things as well.
Eventually ranks 6+ will be added with possible rewards for reaching them.
