2014 Season MMR Boosting Update

Hey Everyone,

As the 2014 Season ends I’d like to pop in and give a little rundown on MMR Boosting, what we’re doing to catch those participating in the act and answer any questions you may have concerning MMR Boosting. As we have said in past threads, at Riot we believe MMR Boosting ruins the spirit of competitive play and devalues the effort many players have invested in our game. Over the last year we’ve made numerous improvements to our detection methods to where we are now able to more aggressively pursue and punish players who’ve participated in MMR Boosting during the 2014 Season.

First off I would like to go over some of the more frequently asked questions and reports we have seen in tickets throughout the 2014 Season:

***Duo Queuing ***

We do not consider duo queuing with another player to be MMR Boosting. We have always allowed friends to play games together and will continue to do so. Though in order to keep the game play a little more balanced we recently added limitations placed on duo queuing based on the difference of ranking between the queue members.

***Spam Bots ***

Over the past few months we have received numerous reports about players receiving messages in chat rooms and through PMs advertising cheap MMR Boosts. We are well aware of these bots and are working on a solution to prevent them from spamming in the future. Please avoid these scams, as many players have had their accounts stolen when attempting to use the services advertised in the bot’s messaging.

How do I report people I suspect to be involved in MMR Boosting?

If you suspect a player is involved in MMR Boosting, filing a report through a support ticket is the best way to bring them to our attention. When making these reports please make sure to include any evidence that confirms your suspicions. Please keep in mind that reporting a player puts them in a queue for investigation. The results are not always immediate and we will be unable to comment on any decision made.

I will be keeping an eye on this thread throughout the day to answer any questions you may have regarding MMR Boosting. If you need to report anyone, please send in a support ticket rather than posting the information in the thread.

I sent a support ticket back in July with sufficient evidence of the booster confirming he was actually elo boosting for the person. I knew the person and talked to him over teamspeak(The Person being Boosted not the Booster) and over the past four months nothing has been done to him, he hasn't been suspended or gotten his rewards removed from my knowledge. The support ticket was then responded to, where I was told that, "we will investigate this player’s behavior and take appropriate action." Meanwhile when the support ticket was posted was when the elo booster was on the account at that same time, I would say/show his name but I don't wish to start a witch hunt. It's kinda foolish that now a post is made about MMR boosting when its literally five days from the season ending.

This is one of the reasons Riot needs to HARD ELO RESET at the end of every season. Right now the gaps just keep growing between top tier and mid tier players. Also, for players that play 3K games a season, there's very little meaning to it if I can just play 10 and get right to where I was at the end of the last season.

As far as elo boosting goes, this helps reinforce the rank of players that were boosted. I remember at the end of S1 when EVERYONE got reset and had to re-climb their way up. It was awesome because you really had no idea who you would get in your team. I remember it causing problems, and there could easily be a way to have your placement matches be more "fair" but in all honesty this game has lost it's competitive edge for anyone below (now Master) tier.

As a player who's earned the end of season rewards skins and bled to climb up ranks, having more ranks added on top, and seeing people who were boosted lose 6 of their placement matches and still be in my division is just saddening. I want to be able to start completely fresh every season so I can know how good I truly am at this game, instead of starting where I left off every year (completely ruining the point of placement matches).

Just set me at 1200 mmr and let me test my mettle.

What is duo queuing with/on a smurf considered?

e.g. Duoing with a Diamond player who is on a Bronze smurf.

I think it's very commendable that you guys are going after this for the integrity of the system, but I feel like it would be difficult to get enough irrefutable proof to justify removing their ranked season rewards.

Over the last year we’ve made numerous improvements to our detection methods to where we are now able to more aggressively pursue and punish players who’ve participated in MMR Boosting during the 2014 Season.

This seems very vague. I understand it may be intentionally left vague so that people are less likely to game the system. I'm no programmer so it's just hard for me to wrap my head around how detection might work without invading someone's privacy or making some very lucky guesses or assumptions.

What do you need as evidence (screenshot in game/lobby chat , statement on SNS / 3rd party forum / skype , etc )?

And people who script and thus gain elo "maining" cassio and xerath? When are they going to be dealt with? And you say support tickets will be queued up for investigation... Lol, my scripter reports were like half a year ago, they still play and climb, thus keep ruining others' games.

I would really understand you didnt give a damn about my reports, ***if they did not contain slow-mo, well-explained youtube mirrors. ***

Hello rito Rhojin, i have some questions: what of the following things is ok/bannable/prefered not to be done:

  • Me playing non-ranked-games on my girlfriends account.
  • Me playing rankeds on my girlfriends account (i prolly know the answer, i'm j ust asking anyways)
  • Me playing duo Q with my girlfriends, but with a smurf account created by myself

and one more thing: i think that you check on which computer the games were played on to detect boosters (ip adress???), so i was just curious if i can run into trouble when my girlfriend plays league ranked games on MY computer, and suddenly has a lucky and better match than the times before.

oh and actually one more thing (sorry :c) are you going to do something against boosting websites those are actually really easy to find through google. the boostingworld was linked to me through an ingame bot who randomly added me and send me a spam massage.

Good luck on banning all the unworthy making-ranked-worse-players ^^ see you on the fields of justice (even though we'll probably never meet cuz i am plat, its just a thing rito guys say xD)

At my High school, we have rank contraptions (who can get to the highest rank at the end of the season). Because one of my friends really wanted to win the competition, he got his friend who is diamond 2 to play on his account. In 2 days, he went from silver 3 to gold 5, still 1 division to pass the current leader, me. Many of us said that he was elo boosting, and that he cheated, but he kept on swearing that he didn't elo boost. During this 2 day period, he never talked to us or said anything. Then, after realizing how much he climbed, I looked at his ranked games and noticed that he was going 27-2, 30-7,19-0,etc on champions that he never plays. After I saw this, i invited him to a normal game looking to see what his summoner spells are. I noticed, that when he palyed with me and talked with me, his flash was on D, then I looked at 20+ ranked games, and every flash was on F. He ruined the whole competition for everyone at least trying to get 3rd place, 4th place, etc... There NEEDS to be a site to report people for elo boosting, so that riot employs can ban them and take away their "achievements".

Hey Riot, a question: I have a kinda-serious ranked team. We're 5 main members and 2 subs. In case we're playing ranked 5vs and one of us loses internet connection (we live in a kinda remote-ish area in brazil with not very good internet connection overall), can one of the other guys in the team log in on whoever-was-disconnected's account to finish the match so we don't play a 4v5?

Which category should we use when reporting boosters?

ps. the new support system has a silly flaw. "XXXXXXXX Boosting in a few seconds in a few seconds Open" it should say "a few seconds ago" considering it is past tense, not future.

How about the opposite, where someone is boosting an account but purposely lose start throwing after the believe the game is lost, in order to not waste anymore time than necessary?

Also what kind of information would you require of us when posting tickets about boosting? For example someone added me who isn't level 30 yet, asking me to add XXXX-player and play duoq with this individual, because it is their account and a diamond tier X player is currently boosting it, and have played a number of games on the account already, it seems kind of vague but is this report worthy?
