Mastery System

So hear me out, I have this pretty neat idea and I would love to see your feedback.

For some of us older players we can remember when you actually used to see people with honor ribbons and that was sorta neat. I feel like that is what Rito is going for with champion masteries however it's a little lack luster, because once you get the mastery its done and there isn't much excitement with it anymore.

My idea is that they add a tier system to the champion mastery. The color of the banner of your level 5 mastery would be determined by your average grade on that champion.

For Example: I am a level 5 Corki player, however I only have an average score of a B+ or Below on him, my Level 5 banner would be Green Once I start performing better and I raise my score to an average of an A- to A+ I would have a Blue level 5 banner, and if I ever became good enough to where the average of my last 15 games on Corki were an S- to S+ I would receive a Red Level 5 banner.

I think this would add some serious prestige to the fact that you have a level 5 champion. This will show your actual talent (as opposed to the fact that you just play them a lot) Also as this lvl 5 feature lasts longer there will be more and more people with lots of level 5 champions.

Please leave any feedback or comment with ideas that you have for this, I just figured that this would be an easy, and neat way for Riot to add a little bit more pride to the champion mastery system.

Level 5 isn't really suppose to show your skill, it just shows you play that champ relatively often. You may know that level 6 and 7 masteries are being added that are meant to show some degree of skill. Later on Riot is suppose to add further levels of mastery.

Skill.... level 6/7 are gotten by getting an S, S+ or S- that then give a token and you combine said tokens and essence together, which isn't that hard to do. 1-5 take much more time to show skill because you are actually playing the champion and earning the points.

Unless RIOT really advances what it means to have mastery of a champion adding more levels of mastery is just level creep and won't mean anything.

Time doesn't equal skill, sure 6 and 7 aren't hard to get but you can get level 5 off of C ranks if you keep playing that champion, you can't get 6 or 7 that way. it may not show a lot of skill but it does show some.

No... getting an S, S- and S+ isn't really skill as it all relates to how well you work with the team. I can get an S by doing very little, having nothing more then high Assists and warding and that is honestly not skill.

Time gives skill much more as it shows how you have learned the champion. The things that you are able to do that others may not be, that is skill.

How well you play with the team is actually a great reflection of your skill as a player with that champ. I also didnt say that you would get it for getting an S, I said an S average, so that means you are consistently being a major part of your team, and doing more than just playing the champ a bunch but not exactly ever doing good on them.

Also you grade is calculated based off of how well you do compared to how other people at your elo play that champion, in kills, deaths, farm, towers, neutral monsters, and assists. It actually is a good sign that if you get an S you did good.

Grades have nothing to do with the elo of other people playing the champ. It's all about the KDA, cs, objectives, ect.

How are the level 6 and 7 going to work? and I really think just color coordinated tiers would look better and be a little cooler not to mention if your average drops, you can lose that colored banner.

I just think the way the "mastery" was marketed it showed that they wanted to display your mastery of the champ. I felt that would be a neat way to do it.

I like the idea but don't also. It's just another something for someone to toxically spam on game to harass other players

Good point, but I mean but if they approach it like that, then they should take out pinging, and typing and normal emotes, and the ability to back spam.

I'm talking about more on terms of toxicity from enemy. I hate when I'm having a tough match up or whatever reason that I'm doing bad in lane and they take it as a "I'm so much better...let me flash my masteries"

Problem now is masteries means absolutely nothing other then you played X amount of games with that champ. So even spamming it doesn't necessarily mean that they are even good at that champion.

Maybe change chromas so where if you get level 5 mastery (but make it harder to get) you get a chroma or summoner icon or something like that.

Flashing your Mastery isn't toxicity. It's braggadocity.

If bragging ever becomes considered to be toxic, then the game is dead.

My Sea Cow1 votes

How is it not being toxic? As I said before the level 5 mastery means abolsutely NOTHING besides "hey I played lots of games with X" doesn't make them any good. If it was judged on how well they did then that's different. Most players use it in a term of "haha you suck" or "haha can't beat me I have a level 5 mastery". Yes there's a few that flash it for laughs when they die but not many. So tell me if someone types haha you suck in chat they can be reported and possibly banned for being verbally abusive and toxic. But flashing masteries to mean the same thing isn't considered toxic?

JRobin311 votes

Flashing your mastery isn't a manifestation of subconscious malevolence or psychosis. It isn't a statement about you being unskilled either. It is a statement that, "I am good with this champion". Whether or not I am good may be a subjective perception and making a statement such as "Look at me and how awesome I am" is to talk about oneself in a proud or self-impressed way - that is to say it is a form of boasting or bragging.

Laughing such as "haha" actually has it's own command in game separate from flashing your mastery. Even so, laughing as things is not in itself toxic either since laughing is not malevolent in general. You can always argue that somethings are rude in particular contexts, but fundamentally it isn't saying "you suck".

Dancing is celebratory and also doesn't generally fall under the category of toxicity.

Taunts are arguably rude and therefore toxic, but ultimately are expressions of the attitudes of the champions according to lore.

However, typing "you suck" in chat isn't a taunt, a celebration, a laugh, or a way of saying you mastered the champion you are playing. And so fundamentally doesn't fall into any of those categories. Typing "You suck" is a direct rude statement that reflects a subconscious malevolence and falls under the category of toxic.

I don't know why you thought that flashing mastery inherently means "haha, you suck", but you were simply wrong about that. That's not what it means and flashing your mastery is not an inherently toxic action.
