The Problem with Champion Mastery Grades

I'm really enjoying the whole champ mastery thing. It's fun, and I feel like it really encourages people to pick and practice just a few champions, which is important when developing as a player. I currently have one real main for each role that I'm working on, and it makes it way easier to focus on elements of the game besides champion mechanics familiarity.

But there's something that irritates me. The grading system currently in place is a crapshoot. I feel like it's a lottery what kind of grade you get. I mean sure getting a generally high or low one is easy enough to figure out, but how does the system determine that? You went 3/9/27 as a tank? Sorry, your massive contributions to team fights are outweighed by the fact that you're the tank and often ended up dying set up situations where your carries could clean up their whole team. You get a B-.

I just played an Amumu game where I went even with my carries for KDA. I landed unworldly bandage tosses. I threw down tons of 3 man ults on enemy squishies. I maintained jungle control. I ganked a lot. I single-handedly defended a turret from a four man push while waiting for back up. I recognized the danger of the Ekko split pushing our top inhibitor after we lost inhib turret, and prioritized that area of our jungle with wards so he couldn't sneak in before we could react. I communicated this to our team so that we would always have wards there. I coordinated the movements of our Nasus to offset enemy pressure so we could work the rest of the map. I sacrificed myself at the end of the game, knowing we were one good push away from winning, and flashed and tossed into 3 enemies, ulting, smiting, and killing one of them (nearly two) all by lonely self (sad mummy). I reacted in a split second to an opportunity to wipe out their carries so my team could finish rushing their base instead of backing off like they were about to do.

I AM NOT taking credit for winning this game. My whole team was amazing. Talon carried hard. Nasus farmed really well and warded and split pushed. MF did tons of damage, and Soraka kept us all alive and warded everything. It was a team effort. Best of all, nobody had to be dragged into doing anything. All I had to do was ask for a ward here or a regroup there and it just happened.

What really bothers me is that you have a system (that unfortunately like any automated system (Ranked LP I'm looking at you)), cannot quantify some of the things that happen in games. The grading system doesn't know that I'm responsible for saving our base over and over again from Ekko's jungly sneaky threats. No, I'm not the only one who reacted to him by backing. But I am the one who coordinated wards to catch him early, and who encouraged everyone to buy homeguards. I'm the one who saved a 50 hp Soraka from a full health Ekko by myself when she finished backing before me. I'm the one who kept the jungle in our control so we could bend the map to our will, rotating between objectives to stay ahead of their assassin/carry comp throughout the mid game.

I got a B.

I had a KDA equal to that of my carries. 12 kills and 26 assists? So what if I died 7 or 8 times? It was an hour long game, and many of my deaths effectively set up positive situations for my team.

Maybe I'm missing something here. Am I missing something here? I worked like a dog for that win, as did we all. I think I deserve better than a B, but that didn't happen because some of my biggest contributions were not in my score, but my mechanics and shot-calling.

Constructive feedback? Does your system take wards into account? Specific kinds of assistance? Jungle control? How well you farm as Nasus? Item builds in response to certain situations? Did you upgrade your trinket?

I suppose I'm being ridiculous. There's no way a computer can do all that (not yet at least… Viktor ). But surely there's something more that can be done to calculate contributions to the team, can't there?

I think the OP shows why most of the points for champion mastery should get rewarded for actually winning the game. Statistics such as KDA simply cannot tell the whole story about about well you played your champion. There are players who feel that statistics like KDA really tell the story about how well they have mastered their champions. These players get upset when they have a good KDA (maybe get a grade of S) but lost the game. They feel they deserve more points for their game stats then for winning or losing the game. But stats such as KDA are biased towards carry role champions.

I noticed something: While you definitely had a greater role in your match than I did, I do recall yesterday how I managed to get an "A" grade playing as Taric just supporting, despite the fact we lost bot lane and fed an enemy Vayne. I did contribute to saving team members and helping make plays, but what I did definitely sounds lower-scale than your efforts.

I find it funny how most games I win I end up with an A or S grade, yet if i lose it's an automatic D.
